Hi thepetergw. I used a little custom programming and Silo 3D to model the gears. The model is not really scalable (maybe up or down just a little). If it is scaled down, the printing machine tolerances don't allow the connectors to attach properly. If it were scaled up, the "built in" gap between the parts would get very wobbly. It is a shame your paper version didn't work out.

What software do you use to model the gears? Does the model scalable? I did made the paper version of Gear Heart. But the gear meshing was not working.

Edit, I saw your "It arrived" thread so I realize that it does infact work...One other thing I was wondering is if you had assembly instructions for this and the gear ball. I plan to buy both! Also, any links to the acid wash you used on the heart...or tips on how to get the same "strange results" as you put it...

Amazing! Does this model actually have the ability to spin like the "Original" one in the youtube video?!

so -- does it work?

The heart was made by modeling a large gear (x3) and a small gear (x9) and boolean intersecting the gears with a heart shape.

Did you just make a bunch of interlocking gears and do a boolean union with a heart shape (adding a backing)? Or did you model the gears individually?

More information about this model can be found in the "It arrived!" forum topic, here: http://www.shapeways.com/forum/index.php?t=msg&th=980

I love this model, very nice idea. I'm working on a "South pointing chariot", but I was a bit late noticing the competition entry, so I didn't get it finished in time. I'm still working out tolerances to check it would work when 3d printed. Ushanka: What program do you model in? There is a nice script for generating gears in Blender at :- http://www.swineworld.org/blender/gears/

Thank you for the clarification, Joris!

With regards to the price: if you order from within the European Union VAT will be added to your order. Because we want to make the prices as transparent as possible we add the VAT amount to all the models you see on the site if you are visiting us from the EU. This transparency is also why shipping is included in all the prices. We don't want to give you any nasty surprises once you've decided to buy something on Shapeways.

Hmm. Anybody else see a price other than $140? I've triple checked on my end and everything looks okay. Even the dyed versions are only $151.50. That's very strange.

wow just looked at the youtube movie! wow! btw the price is incorrect,, or at least for me :P i can order 1 for $ 166.60 but the name of the model says: Gear Heart ($140) just to inform you :D

Sorry, I didn't see there was a second page...
May 14, 2009, 10:52 am
Will you be hollowing it out in the future? It's fairly expensive now, and that might reduce the cost substantially.

LoL, sorry about the extra comment, I'm forgetful! Thanks for your answer. I guess I'll suck it up and put in an order for a copy as soon as you've tested in Real-Life. Thanks for your wonderful work, I'm very excited to see this in person. I'll show it off to everyone, once I add a nice coat of red, shiny paint! ;)

Are you making the parts as hollow as possible? The price seems a bit high, although, in the unassembled state, it's hard to judge size.
May 14, 2009, 5:29 am
All the pieces are hollow to a thickness of 2mm. The gears have small holes in their connectors to let the excess powder out. ....... I didn't know Comments supported multiple pages. :) This is page 2.

Thank you, all. I'm glad you like it. I am currently working on a cube and I'll do other shapes if anyone is interested. :) I'd be happy to share a few design tips. Just send me a PM and I'll answer any questions you may have.
May 9, 2009, 11:04 pm
So great! Do you plan to recreate the papercraft gear cube as well? And do you mind if I ask what your design process was for this model? I've tried making arrangements of conical gears in the past with no success.
May 9, 2009, 8:52 pm
It has been ordered. I'll be sure to post an update when it arrives. :)
May 9, 2009, 8:27 am
Wow. *PLEASE* print one and show us it working. If it does work, I want a copy too!
May 9, 2009, 4:16 am
Wow. Let me know how this turns out.
