@Batsheba, Lisp is pretty easy to find if you know where to look. You could take a look at Common Lisp, Clojure (more aimed at web), and Scheme (more theoretical). Wikipedia can help you bootstrap. The book "Practical Common Lisp", by Peter Seibel, is GREAT even if you don't know how to program. The online version at gigamonkeys.com is free, but the dead-tree version is truly worth its price. Hope I've been useful!

I just received one of these in 'Antique Bronze' and it is beautiful and well worth the cost. Thank you. For the folks out there who are into 'Mathematical Art' the metal versions are the way to go, they WON"T break, and being metal just takes it up several notches. I'll be ordering more of your art soon!

I'm self-taught with CAD, and sometimes I feel like I don't know much about it. I did study programming in school and that was very helpful. I think a grounding in real-world computer languages -- C, C++, Python, Java, LISP if you can find it -- is more useful than any particular generative program or scripting environment.

I do have one more question if it's not too personal.
I am currently a student (applying to UPENN for grad school soon) and I am wondering if you took any classes in order to learn any CAD or generative programs as well as scripting? If not, are you self taught?

I can upload it at a larger size, no problem, but since price goes up as the cube of dimension it'll be like $420. PM me if that's OK, or if you have a particular budget I can simply upload at the size that fits it.

I ordered this in Gold-plated steel. Hopefully, with the gold incdex as high as it is, hopefully it didn't break Shapeway's budget. With all of those tiny holes, there is a huge amount of surface area per volume.

i'm assuming this was made in rhino using some form of parametric scripting? was it done with grasshopper? if so would you mind sharing it with me? i'd be delighted to check out the process, and of course would not use it to reproduce the object or undermine your design in any way.

Mathematica, then Surface Evolver, then Perl, then Rhinoceros. It's a great surface -- Alan Schoen discovered it in the 60's.
