@Kenny_Van check it out in stainless steel! A big hit at Shapeways HQ :)

Looks very good! Loving this design

Blender drove me in 3D modelling and the Gyroid into 3D printing. Building a model close to what Bathsheba produced, using just open source software (the Surface Evolver, Python and Blender) has been quite a challenge. Still have to check by ordering a print, but I think I got it.... and learnt a lot. SciVoxL aka treepleks

This was the first piece from Shapeways I bought, and the inspiration that drew me to 3D printing. It still sits proudly on my desk, and earns many comments and compliments from passers-by. Thanks, Bathsheba. :)

This is fantastic design. All the best!

This is really cool - thank you for providing this design. Ordered in "White Strong & Flexible", came out perfectly! 5 Stars

That is a very nice design! I would like to know what scale is that model and how much it costs roughly to make it on 3d printing.

Very nice design.

eye-catching design ...

wow

I'm VERY pleased with this beautiful design. I bought it in Polished White plastic to see if I like it enough to buy it in one of the metals; I think I will!

hey just got my gyroid.........what a beautiful design! thanks

@Batsheba, Lisp is pretty easy to find if you know where to look. You could take a look at Common Lisp, Clojure (more aimed at web), and Scheme (more theoretical). Wikipedia can help you bootstrap. The book "Practical Common Lisp", by Peter Seibel, is GREAT even if you don't know how to program. The online version at gigamonkeys.com is free, but the dead-tree version is truly worth its price. Hope I've been useful!

Still the best implementation I have ever seen, so elegant and delicate looking, while strong and sturdy, love it!

Bathsheba, I just received one of these in 'Antique Bronze' and it is beautiful and well worth the cost. Thank you. For the folks out there who are into 'Mathematical Art' the metal versions are the way to go, they WON"T break, and being metal just takes it up several notches. I'll be ordering more of your art soon!

I'm self-taught with CAD, and sometimes I feel like I don't know much about it. I did study programming in school and that was very helpful. I think a grounding in real-world computer languages -- C, C++, Python, Java, LISP if you can find it -- is more useful than any particular generative program or scripting environment.

Very nice. I do have one more question if it's not too personal. I am currently a student (applying to UPENN for grad school soon) and I am wondering if you took any classes in order to learn any CAD or generative programs as well as scripting? If not, are you self taught?

I did. They're not all hexes, of course: if they were it would be flat.
October 17, 2011, 6:21 pm
Big fan of your work. Did you use Perl to generate the hex structure?
October 17, 2011, 3:32 pm
I can upload it at a larger size, no problem, but since price goes up as the cube of dimension it'll be like $420. PM me if that's OK, or if you have a particular budget I can simply upload at the size that fits it.

Is there any way to order this in a larger size? I'm thinking 6" square would be awesome.
May 13, 2011, 9:19 pm
I ordered one in Gold-plated steel. Beautiful indeed!
July 8, 2010, 7:20 am
I ordered this in Gold-plated steel. Hopefully, with the gold incdex as high as it is, hopefully it didn't break Shapeway's budget. With all of those tiny holes, there is a huge amount of surface area per volume.

Actually I wrote the algorithmic part myself in Perl, it's pretty hairy code. ;-)

I just got mine in WSF and it is beautiful - great work! Will you be offering this in Alumide?
February 24, 2010, 7:30 pm
Yay, now I've got one too. Awesome :D
February 10, 2010, 11:14 am
i'm assuming this was made in rhino using some form of parametric scripting? was it done with grasshopper? if so would you mind sharing it with me? i'd be delighted to check out the process, and of course would not use it to reproduce the object or undermine your design in any way.

Got mine this morning. The best of the box... really well done.
September 11, 2009, 5:20 pm
I bought one and it looks *exactly* like the picture- Really amazing how high fidelity these shapeway printers are...
September 4, 2009, 1:09 pm
That is pretty awesome. I should get one next time I order a set of models. I'll add it to my favorites until then.

Mathematica, then Surface Evolver, then Perl, then Rhinoceros. It's a great surface -- Alan Schoen discovered it in the 60's.

uooooou! very cool! how did you did it? nice work
