About this Product

CAUTION: THIS IS ONLY THE SPHERE CORE!! This a spherical core for Mefferts' Mosaic Cube, designed by me. Several people have noticed that the mechanism is a bit "spongy". The issues are illustrated by Roxanne Wong in this YouTube video.

The cause of this spongyness, and the resulting less-than-optimal turning, is the large cavity inside the puzzle into which the pieces are pushed. Twisty Puzzle Forum contributor Burgo suggested to fill the cavity with a spherical core. This new spherical core fills the cavity completely, making the puzzle more stable.

Note that this model is only the new spherical core. You can buy the Mosaic Cube online from Mefferts.

@cataldo444 One more thing to remember: On the Mosaic Cube, the screws are sealed underneath the endcaps on the corners. The corner endcaps are lightly glued onto the part. You will need to grip the corner with a rubber grip pad (like you use to open a stubborn jar) and pull firmly to break the seal. The end cap should pop off cleanly. Do not use pliers or sharp instruments as they will scuff the plastic. Don't use bare fingers either as with the sudden release of pressure the sparp plastic may cut your skin. I speak from experience! :o Each of the eight end caps has three pegs that sink into the rotating corner. Take care to pull strait out so you do not break these pins. I broke two pegs off (out of 24) during the initial disassembly, but all the parts stayed together without glue when the puzzle was reassembled with the new core.

@cataldo444 wow, necro-bump. LOL! Sadly my puzzles are sitting in a box as I've been out of the hobby for a while. :( The ball core definitely helps with the alignment, a lot. My memory is a bit fuzzy because it's been forever since I played with the Mozaic Cube. I bought the core in black, strong, and flexible. Being porous, I sprayed the core with silicone spray until it was dripping wet, then pat-dried it with a paper towell. It's been a few years, but if my memory serves correct, the screws have a threaded area followed by an abruptly wider shaft preventing overtightening. Tighten the screw until it stops, but don't force it! Problem with the original spider core is the pieces becoming misaligned during rotation. The ball core makes the puzzle so that the interior of the pieces is always in contact with the sphere. This mostly solves the "spongy" aspect of the puzzle, preventing one piece pushing in while another pushes out. You will find the puzzle much more stable, and it should rotate freely if you lubricate the core. It is still possible to pop but far less likely than before with the new core. The puzzle is beautiful to rotate and moderately easy to solve, but do't try speedcubing with it. Take care...

I've had the Mosaic Cube since Mefferts produced them and I have never actually played with it. This really wasn't ready for mass production. I tried a different core last year. It still didn't work out. I finally was able to purchase this core and I must say, Oskar, you are amazing! Thanks for doing this.

Thank you so much Oskar. The Mosaic Cube definitely needed to be fixed.
