Essential protection for iPhone 4S and iPhone 4

Even though 4-4 may be the worlds lightest and smallest iPhone 4 case, it still provides great protection to the vulnerable edges of the iPhones' front and back covers - while all controls and connections remain accessible. Its slightly protruding profile helps prevent scratches when laying your phone down; using 4-4 can also help to avoid signal loss problems.

This bumper-style case may be combined with commercially available screen protectors. 4-4 is manufactured from tough and durable 3d printed polyamide; it has a slightly textured surface that gives you great grip on your phone. Available in white, black and limited edition colors - note that in white, the 3d printed material may get dirty more quickly - but you can (seriously!) dishwash this product, so that shouldn't be too much of a problem. The 4-4 case is designed to have a tight fit around for iPhone. To put the iPhone in the case, or take it out, start at one of the bottom corners, where there are no buttons. Colors in the images above are for reference only; please check under 'select material' to get the most up-to-date preview of currently available product colors. Product is shipped in basic Shapeways packaging.

4-4 fits the GSM and CDMA/Verizon versions of iPhone 4, as well as the new iPhone 4S.

A two pack of 4-4's in the same color is available at reduced prices here.

Hi Khanafi, sorry to hear your item broke - and glad your iPhone is ok! It won't be of much consolation to you, but it is the first time I hear of a 4-4 breaking like that, with hundreds sold. The case should be very strong, my own have survived numerous drops - so there could have been a production issue, or it was just a 'freak accident'. You could contact service@shapeways.com about it, though I'm not sure if you can get a replacement in this case. By the way, it seems Shapeways' comment notification system is broken, otherwise I would have responded sooner.

After a couple of weeks of using my case, it broke today. It fell from counter-height to the floor and the corner of the case broke apart. The phone seems to be fine, but the case is done for. I'm not normally so clumsy which is why I purchased such a minimalistic case, but accidents do happen. My question is though, is the case really meant to be that fragile, or should it survive a couple more bumps before becoming waste? I'd like to know before I invest in another one. I waited for 3 weeks for this one and only used it for 2 weeks. Aside from this, the case looks and feels great, and fit my iphone4 perfectly.

Crewtx, I heard there was some software test/mixup which ended up printing your case in the wrong direction. It should be solved now, and I was told by Shapeways you are getting a new, fitting one.

Dear Crewtx, Really sorry to hear this. It won't be any consolation to you when I say that, apparently, the vast majority of cases does get printed right; in fact, I'm personally really frustrated by the fact that some still turn out less than perfect. My guess is that there is still some production facility, or even isolated operator, out there, that prints these in the wrong direction, which can result in the poor fit you describe (I'll spare you the technicalities). From my experience with Shapeways though, they'll do everything they can to get you a new, fitting case, with zero extra costs for you, and I will tug their sleeve about this too, just to make sure. What I can promise is that I will contact Shapeways myself about your problem too, and if for some reason you are not able to work it out with them, don't hesitate to send me a message through the e-mail above. Kind regards, and thanks for your patience - Michiel

I received my case last week and it is loose. Not a snug fit at all. I have contacted Shapeways and they told me to send them some pictures of the ill-fitting case. I have sent them and they said they "have raised an official complaint for this, and as soon as they have determined what could be the cause of this, we will offer you a proper solution. If we decided to re-print this model, you will be informed by email about all the production updates". The way I interpret it is, there is no guarantee they will replace the product. I don't want t to return it because it postage will cost almost as much as the product. What is there to investigate? If it doesn't fit, then it doesn't fit. The pictures are proof. What I really cannot fathom is: the iPhone 4 has been around for almost 2 years now - why can't they get the dimensions straight? I've seen other people complain about the fit, so I'm not the only one. Looks like they have quality control issues.

Hey Alialzand, the 3d-printed nylon can be a bit rough in the beginning, althoug it really tends to smoothen with use; some people like it because of the grip it gives, but not everybody. I'm pretty sure you can return your case if you don't want to keep it, just contact service@shapeways.com.

Just got the "red" one. Unfortunately, it looks pink. Also, the material feels like sandpaper. I'm not gonna use it. It was worth a try, and I'm gonna continue to look for the perfect balance of protection and elegance for my 4S. P.S. To the guy who designed it: It does fit perfectly, and it does seem to protect the screen when you put the iPhone face down on a table. It's the material that disappoints me, not the design.

Works perfectly on my iPhone 4s

This is a great design. Fits super well on the phone.

I've now talked to Shapeways, and they are going to take some extra measures in the printing of each of these products, so every print should be to the exact dimensions needed. If, for some reason, you should still receive one with a poor fit, you can contact Shapeways and you should get a reprint.

Hey vmdagger, really glad it worked out for you in the end; and thanks so much for updating me with this, and for your recommendation. I'll make sure Shapeways knows about the color thing, hopefully they can provide some better color previews soon.

FINAL UPDATE: Thanks to Michiel and Shapeways...I received my reprint of the 4-4 case and it fits nice and tight now. It looks great and now fits great; so I can give this my full recommendation. I STILL SAY BEWARE OF THE COLOR shades...I have an HDMI and HD monitor with true color settings...and they are off of the colors displayed by Shapeways (see my post below).

I like the case, fits nice, works well. My only issue with it is I ordered the blue version, and it's definitely "blurple". I'm not saying there is anything wrong with it, it's just not what I call blue and not my type of color. It's fine, I'll just order one in white or black for myself and give this one to my wife.

Hi dherreraa, Hi dherreraa, I would say, pretty much, yes. Perhaps the red is a little darker than what you see in the images, but it depends a lot on your monitor. Have a look at the 'select material' tab at the top of this page, it shows the most current representation of Shapeways' colors.
2012-02-06 09:05:24 by Michiel Cornelissen
the red color it´s the same as the photo?. Thanks

Update: Shapeways is sending me a reprint after providing pics and video of the poor fit. The product does look great, even with the poor fit...tips for people out there is that the colors are not true to name (Red leans more to the magenta shade, Grey is more like lavender, Black is more like Charcoal...) I'll update when I get the reprint, but I still give this product 4 stars for now.

Thanks for the jet-fast reply Michiel; it is great to see you backing-up your product. Your explanation makes sense. I just emailed Shapeways, so I'll let you know how it goes.

Hi Vmdagger, I'm really sorry to hear that your 4-4 is not as it should be. My answer is still the same though: contact service@shapeways.com and ask for a reprint. The thing is, the shape and dimensions I've specified should provide a perfect fit, and they mostly do. In fact, the design even has some flexibility built in, to ensure that small size variations still allow for a good fit. Still, it seems that in a relatively small number of cases, the variations are really out of tolerance and the fit is not how it should be. I'm going to go back to Shapeways to try and find out what is going on, and how we can prevent this from happening, but in the mean time, if you happen to be one of the unlucky ones that ran into this problem, simply mail service@shapeways.com, explain the situation and ask for a reprint. As far as I know, Shapeways is pretty good with doing reprints or giving refunds.

Like Sorjonen, my newly arrived case is also loose. I have an AT&T iPhone 4s and it is NOT a tight fit. The case won't exactly fall off, but it can be easily moved even with a light flick or gentle finger pressure, and moves when I pick it up from my desk (I can share video later). Michiel, you say to email shapeways, but what do I tell them? I thought they just constructed the items to your specs, so what can they do to help? On a positive note, pretty much everything else about the case is great. Looks awesome, very simple, and still keeps the overall look of the iPhone intact. Speaking of looks, FYI to people out there, the red is not as deep red as pictured (but that stuff happens with web photos) and from reading other reviews, perhaps all the colors are a bit lighter than they appear in photos. Overall, however, I cannot recommend this product, and feel like I wasted my money on something that looks good but is not functional on my phone.

I've been very impressed with this case. I ordered two that fit an iPhone 4 and an iPhone 4S perfectly. The fit is extremely tight and makes installing it a process; I suggest starting with the volume/mute switch side first. This tight fit is great for falls as the case does not fly off. The surface is rough, but this is due to the 3D printing nature. The case picks up pocket lint, but is so minimal and tight fitting that I don't care about that. I have the white case on a white phone and it looks great!

This is an interesting (independent) review of the 4-4 case. Note that indeed, I am "from some European country". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnRiewIbKlE

Hi Sorjonen, If your case doesn't fit, something probably went wrong in the printing process - best to mail service@shapeways.com about a solution. The surface finish is inherent to the 3D printing process. Cheers - Michiel

The original "Feel" of this product is not right. It is too rough. I found a remedy for it. By scratching the surface gently with fingernails, you will soon find it very comfortable. The downside of this scratching is a slightly grey surface and loss of optical value. Somehow, this case does not fit around my iPhone perfectly. It is slightly too long and wide and does not deliver a really all-around snap-fit. However, after mentioning these findings, I am happy to have this case in general. Not of the quality as I expected, but I can enjoy using it.

Thanks! I designed it in my long time favorite CAD software, Rhino.

Really glad you guys like 4-4. You're right about the texture; it should get smoother quite quickly.
2011-12-13 08:24:03 by Michiel Cornelissen
I'm with bdickason; just got mine today, and the texture was rougher than I expected, but it is still the first day. As with any new thing, I'm sure in a week it'll feel like I've had it forever. The slim design is nice compared to a chunky rubber bumper. Overall, pretty pleased; we'll see how it feels in my hand this week.
2011-12-13 01:12:55 by CameronChristopher
Just received this, one for me and one for my wife. It was a bit more rough than I expected but very sturdy and feels nice in my hand. So far, so good, it's protected against a few drops already.

Absolutely great product. Superb minimal design that not only improves iphone4's reception, but sky rockets it's design-appeal. In my opinion, there's really no other iPhone4 cover around that can compete on this high aesthetic level. (I've researched/browsed 100's of websites to find one.) The ones I found so far are all bulky and make the iPhone bigger/heavier and most of the time hide the great original product design. The moment I saw this cover design, I immediately ordered a 2-pack. Payment/Delivery all went smooth. And within a week, I could visually please my IPhone4 with this firm protective wrapping. :) Top product! Highly recommended. (Tjerja Geerts, Strategy & Design Director, Ready For The Crowd)
