About this Product

Important notice: a lot of people have been very happy with this product, but, as can be read in some of the comments below, it's clear that this design is right on the edge of what Shapeways can produce to the right quality at this moment. If you buy it, there's a risk of having a less then perfect fit, colors can be different from what you see on the screen, and, depending on how you use your phone as well as the tolerances of the case, it has been reported that the polyamide material can give a sort of polishing/scratching effect on the metal rim of the phone (you can find descriptions online of how to remove these kind of blemishes, but it may still be annoying).
Shapeways has, in my experience, been very good with customer service on this item, so they'll be happy to either return your money or provide a new product if you would be one of the unlucky ones; but it's up to you if you want to run the risk that you may have to go through this process.

Essential protection for iPhone 4S and iPhone 4

Even though 4-4 may be the worlds lightest and smallest iPhone 4 case, it still provides great protection to the vulnerable edges of the iPhones' front and back covers - while all controls and connections remain accessible. Its slightly protruding profile helps prevent protect the glass when laying your phone down; using 4-4 can also help to avoid signal loss problems.

This bumper-style case may be combined with commercially available screen protectors. 4-4 is manufactured from tough and durable 3d printed polyamide; it has a slightly textured surface that gives you great grip on your phone. Available in white, black and various colors - note that in white, the 3d printed material may get dirty more quickly - but you can (seriously!) dishwash this product, so that shouldn't be too much of a problem. The 4-4 case is designed to have a tight fit around for iPhone. To put the iPhone in the case, or take it out, start at one of the bottom corners, where there are no buttons. Colors in the images above are for reference only; please check under 'select material' to get the most up-to-date preview of currently available product colors. Product is shipped in basic Shapeways packaging.

4-4 fits the GSM and CDMA/Verizon versions of iPhone 4, as well as the iPhone 4S.

A two pack of 4-4's in the same color is available at reduced prices here.

I've enjoyed two of these over the years, inspiring several friends to get one too. Would definitely love to see an updated design for the new iPhone 6! Please :) The minimal design is so simple and elegant, protecting the phone without totally obscuring the device and adding extra bulk like most cases do. It allows the original beauty of the hardware design show through, while still protecting the edges and screen from the kinds of dings that lead to cracks. Also has the added bonus of adding a little bit of friction, so the glass slab doesn't slide out of pockets when sitting. So much better than all the bulky and expensive cases out there.

I would like to know about the quality in printing and color nowadays... Do you have any newer information related to your case?
October 8, 2013, 9:00 pm
Neat. I think I am going to order one as a gift.
May 24, 2013, 10:34 pm
@MichielCornelissen i just broke my iphone yesterday.. a similar case like this i have,i need a good one becouse i don't want to broke him again.. so i'll search for more here, becouse i am new to shapeways. i will think abour this 4-4 too :)
May 17, 2013, 8:35 pm
@Rnss A friend calls me everytime the 4-4 case 'saves' his phone from some terrible drop. That's starting to becoming a very regular thing :)
May 17, 2013, 7:36 pm
a good idea would be thicker casing in order not to break the phone so easy when it falls
May 17, 2013, 6:41 pm
Michiel; Thanks for your great response and integrity. I realize that I should put an extra comment in here to let people know that although the mfg process is shaky and sometimes inconvenient, Michiel has always been very open and responsive and, yes, Shapeways was easy to work with for customer service. The product itself is great as long as you get one that fits well and are okay with the true color. ;)

Hi vmdagger, jshak and others, Sorry to hear about your troubles with the product. It's a shame; for a while it seemed like Shapeways had the quality much more under control, but lately too many complaints have been popping up again. In response, I've put a notice at the top of the page, explaining the particularities of this product, so hopefully the situation is more clear to prospective buyers. Kind regards, Michiel

I have owned this case for over a year, and wanted to share some thoughts, as I just recently switched cases. 1) I had to order this case twice to get a perfect fit. Looking at the comments below it looks like the mfg. process is still a little imperfect, which does not bode well for something that requires such precision. 2) The case colors you see online are NOT what the real colors look like (ie My red case looks more hot pink than red...something I lived with b/c I don't like to waste money). 3) The case is hard on your phone. The plastic is slightly flexible but hard, and is abrasive on the phones edges. My metal edge is scratched all around the phone in the exact pattern of the case. This is an amazing looking design of a minimalist case, but until the materials and mfg. process can be approved, I would only by this case if you are in love with the design, and don't care about these other troubles I indicated.
November 29, 2012, 5:50 pm
I've several questions relevant to the variations in fit of these cases: 1. Is the plastic used for all material options of the same composition? (In other words and more specifically, does the plastic used for all options have the same physical properties excluding color?) 2. Is Shapeways sourcing and producing all on the same equipment and location?

This case isn't worth it. The first one (red) I brought was good and I gave it to my mom when she got an iPhone. I brought three black ones for myself and my dad and not one of them fitted! They were maybe 1 mm too long and wide so the iPhone just jiggles around. I asked for replacements, got three new ones, and only one case was acceptable. So out of five black cases I received, ONLY ONE had the right fit. I am very disappointed. Also one last thing, being the case isn't tight, the edges rub on the iPhone. Since the material is a bit abrasive when you get it, my iPhone's metal edges are full of scratches!

case must be worth it
October 18, 2012, 1:15 pm
Sorry, nothing in the pipeline right now! Bit busy with other things...
October 14, 2012, 1:41 pm
By any chance, do you have any bumper designs for the new iPhone 5?
October 14, 2012, 12:57 pm
Perfect!!!
September 12, 2012, 1:24 am
Hi Marmock, glad to hear you're enjoying the product!
September 4, 2012, 9:41 am
I've had my case for two weeks now and couldn't be happier. I have not had any fit issues. I keep it in my pocket all the time and have no issues with expansion from heat.
August 28, 2012, 1:35 pm
Hi guys, just to repeat what's been mentioned before: the fit should be perfect, and it is, in most cases, as far as I'm aware. For reasons I've not been able to dig up, every now and then a loose one seems to pop up. If that's the case, contact Shapeways and they'll replace it for free. It's possible that the case is a little more flexible in warm weather, but even then it should have a good fit.
August 6, 2012, 5:34 pm
I agree with the previous poster. I am having problems with the fit of my case as well (have opened a support email with Shapeways). It is slightly loose, and this problem is more noticeable if the iphone is kept in my pocket - it loosens up to the point where one corner will pop off fairly easily. I can't decide if it is because the plastic is expanding or simply becomes more flexible when warm. Perhaps the minimalistic nature of the case design itself contributes to these problems. The case looks fantastic with a thin adhesive fiberglass back I've put on my phone, but I am concerned that it won't protect my phone if I do manage to drop it.
August 6, 2012, 3:09 pm
Michiel, I ordered one of these a few months ago. Very happy with it so far. One thing I have noticed is that when the case is warm (from being in your pocket all day) or hot (in the summer), it expands slightly. The expansion is small, but enough that the case gets much looser. That could explain the loose-fitting issues that some users are complaining about. Just on a whim, I stuck my iPhone with the case in the freezer for a few minutes. When I took it back out, the cold freezer had caused the case to shrink back to normal size, and it fit much tighter on the iPhone than it had a few minutes before. That made me think, you could adjust the design for this case so that at normal temperatures, it was too tight to fit onto (or slip off of) the phone. Users would need to slightly warm up the case, to expand it, when they wanted to put it onto their iPhone - then when the temperature got back to normal, the case would fit nice and tightly on the iPhone. Just a thought there. Great design in any case! On a different note, I would recommend using this product with these: 1) 4x4 case, protects the edges of the iPhone 2) thin clear plastic screen protector, completely protects the front glass of the iPhone 3) thin clear plastic back protector, completely protects the back glass of the iPhone 4) rubber dust protection plug for the headphone jack 5) rubber dust protection plug for the data port at the bottom With all these on the iPhone, it is virtually completely protected no matter which way you drop it, and from sand and dust abrasion - yet the look conserves the styling and look of the iPhone, without adding any chunky case or logos.
July 16, 2012, 7:18 pm
Hi jvuu, thanks! Yes, as far as I know it will work fine with thin screen protectors.
June 30, 2012, 8:26 pm
Hey, this case looks awesome! im wondering, does this conflict with a screen protector?
June 30, 2012, 7:24 pm
Hey there, these products are manufactured as you order - that's 3d printing for you. Basically, the vast majority seems to get made perfectly within tolerance, but in a small number of cases something can go wrong and the fit is too loose. If that would happen to be your case, you can be sure Shapeways will replace the product for you. So I would say you can order pretty safely.
June 28, 2012, 1:58 pm
Hi! I read quite a few comments about issues with the fitting. Has this been fixed already? Have the ones that didnt fit been replaced by shapeways? I'm thinking about purchasing some.
June 28, 2012, 1:52 pm
Hey Runner7, completely agree, the fit should be perfect. It as frustrating to me as it is to you guys, that it sometimes isn't. Judging from the feedback I receive compared to the number of sales, it only affects a small percentage of products, but it's very annoying nonetheless, and I won't stop bugging Shapeways about it until we get it right. Even better news is that service@Shapeways.com is normally very responsive in solving the issue. Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with - Michiel
June 20, 2012, 1:48 pm
Hi Michiel. Received my black 4-4 today. My case, also does not tightly fit my iPhone. It moves about when the phone is held. FYI I've sent an email to Shapeways and look forward to a positive response. I like the idea and look of your case. It just needs to fit properly!
June 20, 2012, 11:29 am
Hi Angelosv, No, your 4-4 should have a perfect, tight, fit. If that's not the case, please contact service@Shapeways.com and they should be able to send you a replacement. Sorry for the inconvience, Michiel
June 14, 2012, 7:44 am
Hi Khanafi, sorry to hear your item broke - and glad your iPhone is ok! It won't be of much consolation to you, but it is the first time I hear of a 4-4 breaking like that, with hundreds sold. The case should be very strong, my own have survived numerous drops - so there could have been a production issue, or it was just a 'freak accident'. You could contact service@Shapeways.com about it, though I'm not sure if you can get a replacement in this case. By the way, it seems Shapeways' comment notification system is broken, otherwise I would have responded sooner.
May 22, 2012, 4:56 pm
After a couple of weeks of using my case, it broke today. It fell from counter-height to the floor and the corner of the case broke apart. The phone seems to be fine, but the case is done for. I'm not normally so clumsy which is why I purchased such a minimalistic case, but accidents do happen. My question is though, is the case really meant to be that fragile, or should it survive a couple more bumps before becoming waste? I'd like to know before I invest in another one. I waited for 3 weeks for this one and only used it for 2 weeks. Aside from this, the case looks and feels great, and fit my iphone4 perfectly.
May 15, 2012, 1:16 pm
Crewtx, I heard there was some software test/mixup which ended up printing your case in the wrong direction. It should be solved now, and I was told by Shapeways you are getting a new, fitting one.
May 2, 2012, 12:28 pm
Dear Crewtx, Really sorry to hear this. It won't be any consolation to you when I say that, apparently, the vast majority of cases does get printed right; in fact, I'm personally really frustrated by the fact that some still turn out less than perfect. My guess is that there is still some production facility, or even isolated operator, out there, that prints these in the wrong direction, which can result in the poor fit you describe (I'll spare you the technicalities). From my experience with Shapeways though, they'll do everything they can to get you a new, fitting case, with zero extra costs for you, and I will tug their sleeve about this too, just to make sure. What I can promise is that I will contact Shapeways myself about your problem too, and if for some reason you are not able to work it out with them, don't hesitate to send me a message through the e-mail above. Kind regards, and thanks for your patience - Michiel
May 1, 2012, 7:53 am
I received my case last week and it is loose. Not a snug fit at all. I have contacted Shapeways and they told me to send them some pictures of the ill-fitting case. I have sent them and they said they "have raised an official complaint for this, and as soon as they have determined what could be the cause of this, we will offer you a proper solution. If we decided to re-print this model, you will be informed by email about all the production updates". The way I interpret it is, there is no guarantee they will replace the product. I don't want t to return it because it postage will cost almost as much as the product. What is there to investigate? If it doesn't fit, then it doesn't fit. The pictures are proof. What I really cannot fathom is: the iPhone 4 has been around for almost 2 years now - why can't they get the dimensions straight? I've seen other people complain about the fit, so I'm not the only one. Looks like they have quality control issues.
April 29, 2012, 11:42 pm
Hey Alialzand, the 3d-printed nylon can be a bit rough in the beginning, althoug it really tends to smoothen with use; some people like it because of the grip it gives, but not everybody. I'm pretty sure you can return your case if you don't want to keep it, just contact service@Shapeways.com.
April 7, 2012, 9:18 am
Just got the "red" one. Unfortunately, it looks pink. Also, the material feels like sandpaper. I'm not gonna use it. It was worth a try, and I'm gonna continue to look for the perfect balance of protection and elegance for my 4S. P.S. To the guy who designed it: It does fit perfectly, and it does seem to protect the screen when you put the iPhone face down on a table. It's the material that disappoints me, not the design.
April 4, 2012, 9:50 pm
Works perfectly on my iPhone 4s
March 11, 2012, 2:13 am
This is a great design. Fits super well on the phone.
March 9, 2012, 9:03 pm
I've now talked to Shapeways, and they are going to take some extra measures in the printing of each of these products, so every print should be to the exact dimensions needed. If, for some reason, you should still receive one with a poor fit, you can contact Shapeways and you should get a reprint.
February 8, 2012, 8:55 am
Hey vmdagger, really glad it worked out for you in the end; and thanks so much for updating me with this, and for your recommendation. I'll make sure Shapeways knows about the color thing, hopefully they can provide some better color previews soon.
February 7, 2012, 6:39 pm
FINAL UPDATE: Thanks to Michiel and Shapeways...I received my reprint of the 4-4 case and it fits nice and tight now. It looks great and now fits great; so I can give this my full recommendation. I STILL SAY BEWARE OF THE COLOR shades...I have an HDMI and HD monitor with true color settings...and they are off of the colors displayed by Shapeways (see my post below).
February 7, 2012, 6:16 pm
I like the case, fits nice, works well. My only issue with it is I ordered the blue version, and it's definitely "blurple". I'm not saying there is anything wrong with it, it's just not what I call blue and not my type of color. It's fine, I'll just order one in white or black for myself and give this one to my wife.
February 6, 2012, 11:38 pm
Hi dherreraa, Hi dherreraa, I would say, pretty much, yes. Perhaps the red is a little darker than what you see in the images, but it depends a lot on your monitor. Have a look at the 'select material' tab at the top of this page, it shows the most current representation of Shapeways' colors.
February 6, 2012, 9:05 am
the red color it´s the same as the photo?. Thanks
February 6, 2012, 2:35 am
Update: Shapeways is sending me a reprint after providing pics and video of the poor fit. The product does look great, even with the poor fit...tips for people out there is that the colors are not true to name (Red leans more to the magenta shade, Grey is more like lavender, Black is more like Charcoal...) I'll update when I get the reprint, but I still give this product 4 stars for now.
January 31, 2012, 8:44 pm
Thanks for the jet-fast reply Michiel; it is great to see you backing-up your product. Your explanation makes sense. I just emailed Shapeways, so I'll let you know how it goes.
January 26, 2012, 3:51 pm
Hi Vmdagger, I'm really sorry to hear that your 4-4 is not as it should be. My answer is still the same though: contact service@Shapeways.com and ask for a reprint. The thing is, the shape and dimensions I've specified should provide a perfect fit, and they mostly do. In fact, the design even has some flexibility built in, to ensure that small size variations still allow for a good fit. Still, it seems that in a relatively small number of cases, the variations are really out of tolerance and the fit is not how it should be. I'm going to go back to Shapeways to try and find out what is going on, and how we can prevent this from happening, but in the mean time, if you happen to be one of the unlucky ones that ran into this problem, simply mail service@Shapeways.com, explain the situation and ask for a reprint. As far as I know, Shapeways is pretty good with doing reprints or giving refunds.
January 26, 2012, 7:30 am
Like Sorjonen, my newly arrived case is also loose. I have an AT&T iPhone 4s and it is NOT a tight fit. The case won't exactly fall off, but it can be easily moved even with a light flick or gentle finger pressure, and moves when I pick it up from my desk (I can share video later). Michiel, you say to email shapeways, but what do I tell them? I thought they just constructed the items to your specs, so what can they do to help? On a positive note, pretty much everything else about the case is great. Looks awesome, very simple, and still keeps the overall look of the iPhone intact. Speaking of looks, FYI to people out there, the red is not as deep red as pictured (but that stuff happens with web photos) and from reading other reviews, perhaps all the colors are a bit lighter than they appear in photos. Overall, however, I cannot recommend this product, and feel like I wasted my money on something that looks good but is not functional on my phone.
January 25, 2012, 11:23 pm
I've been very impressed with this case. I ordered two that fit an iPhone 4 and an iPhone 4S perfectly. The fit is extremely tight and makes installing it a process; I suggest starting with the volume/mute switch side first. This tight fit is great for falls as the case does not fly off. The surface is rough, but this is due to the 3D printing nature. The case picks up pocket lint, but is so minimal and tight fitting that I don't care about that. I have the white case on a white phone and it looks great!
January 25, 2012, 8:59 pm
This is an interesting (independent) review of the 4-4 case. Note that indeed, I am "from some European country". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnRiewIbKlE
January 19, 2012, 12:52 pm
Hi Sorjonen, If your case doesn't fit, something probably went wrong in the printing process - best to mail service@Shapeways.com about a solution. The surface finish is inherent to the 3D printing process. Cheers - Michiel
January 16, 2012, 1:11 pm
The original "Feel" of this product is not right. It is too rough. I found a remedy for it. By scratching the surface gently with fingernails, you will soon find it very comfortable. The downside of this scratching is a slightly grey surface and loss of optical value. Somehow, this case does not fit around my iPhone perfectly. It is slightly too long and wide and does not deliver a really all-around snap-fit. However, after mentioning these findings, I am happy to have this case in general. Not of the quality as I expected, but I can enjoy using it.
January 12, 2012, 4:43 pm
Thanks! I designed it in my long time favorite CAD software, Rhino.
January 4, 2012, 9:52 am
grate design... what software did u use for this?

Really glad you guys like 4-4. You're right about the texture; it should get smoother quite quickly.
December 13, 2011, 8:24 am
I'm with bdickason; just got mine today, and the texture was rougher than I expected, but it is still the first day. As with any new thing, I'm sure in a week it'll feel like I've had it forever. The slim design is nice compared to a chunky rubber bumper. Overall, pretty pleased; we'll see how it feels in my hand this week.
December 13, 2011, 1:12 am
Just received this, one for me and one for my wife. It was a bit more rough than I expected but very sturdy and feels nice in my hand. So far, so good, it's protected against a few drops already.
December 10, 2011, 12:02 am
Absolutely great product. Superb minimal design that not only improves iphone4's reception, but sky rockets it's design-appeal. In my opinion, there's really no other iPhone4 cover around that can compete on this high aesthetic level. (I've researched/browsed 100's of websites to find one.) The ones I found so far are all bulky and make the iPhone bigger/heavier and most of the time hide the great original product design. The moment I saw this cover design, I immediately ordered a 2-pack. Payment/Delivery all went smooth. And within a week, I could visually please my IPhone4 with this firm protective wrapping. :) Top product! Highly recommended. (Tjerja Geerts, Strategy & Design Director, Ready For The Crowd)
