This ring gear has been designed to fit on the Canon EF-S 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS kit lens, the budget lens that can come with the Canon Rebel Ti2/550D DSLR camera. I designed it for my own needs as I could not find a supplier that made one to fit this lens. It has two gear types, the standard 0.8 Mod, which should work with a standard follow focus, and a lego pitch gear for those like me who can’t afford or justify spending cash on the real thing.

I had my ring gear printed in Alumide and I found it fitted the lens like a glove, I’ve not tested any other materials yet so keep that in mind if you order one. You will have to supply your own bolt/screw to fix the ring in place but you will need to open the hole to suit. It does not require much pressure to hold it in place, I fact I only used an 8.1 x 1.6 mm o-ring to hold it in place.

cm: 7.878 w x 2 d x 6.962 h
in: 3.102 w x 0.787 d x 2.741 h

It has the same gear mod of 0.8 so should be ok.

@DrJekyll Excellent product! Filmmakers definitely needed something like this for their kit lens. I did a quick product review and shared it with my fellow low-budget filmmakers. See my review at: http://youtu.be/V4MZKZWDGys

@DrJekyll I just got a 3D printer myself, do you happen to have an STL file of this design laying around? Cheers

@ZuneLune I did not render any images, all the images are photographs apart from the default shapeways render. Sorry I don't have a video of it in use, I sort of forgot about this project. I may pick it up again as I now have my own basic 3D printer that I can use for test prints.

I would love to know how you created the rendering and see a video of it in use. I would love to have one for my 14-40mm and 70-200mm and this seems like it would be reasonably priced.
