Dragonscale Chain Maille (mail) sampler.

Large rings are 18mm OD 2mm 'wire', the small rings are 12mm OD 1mm 'wire'. With the large aspect ratios of the rings, this is quite a loose weave with plenty of flexibility. This sample patch comprises of 86 rings in all with no joins!.

cm: 7.352 w x 5.68 d x 1.45 h

@hideto - the cost would be rather high

@stop4stuff I would, in fact, be interested, but I worry about the price. If the cost ends up high enough with a finished piece, I'd almost be better off buying actual metal chainmail. :/ What do you think?

@hideto - Thanks :) It would work for LARP, the material is sintered nylon, its quite tough hence the Shapeways name of Strong & Flexible. A demonstration of the properties of 1.25mm S&F 'wire' can be seen at http://youtu.be/XNXz1D0R0Ls A couple of downsides to getting a large piece printed is the model triangle limitation and the number of inter connecting rings - too many rings + triangles makes Shapeways checking software upset :( If you're interested in working on such a project, send me a message.

@stop4stuff - That's alright. It's beautiful work! If enough of this was made, would it work as a maille shirt for, say, LARP, or is it still kind of fragile/more-for-art-than-use?

@hideto - Sorry for the delay in replying. This could possibly be made using a DSML printing process. Unfortunately it is not possible with the materials currently offerred by Shapeways.

Could you offer this in steel or is it too hard/fiddly for steel?
