Inspired by the well known mobius strip (discovered by August Ferdinand Möbius in 1858), an interest in the unusual, and 3D modelling, I created the Twin Rail mobius pendant.

A half shell and 3 rails form a bearing-like structure to encapsulate a train of 6mm balls in a mind-warping cage with a twisting, fascinating movement bringing to life the only pendent of its kind in the world.

Includes a 4mm loop for attaching to a necklace or leather cord.

See the photographs with retro-fitted 31 6mm chrome steel ball bearings... in the bottom photo, the balls have been heated until they 'blue'... check out the video to see how they move by clicking on the little icon below the camera above.

Also available smaller and in silver, Twin Rail Mobius Pendant - small

Note: this item is the shell alone, you will need to aquire and fit the balls (31 x 6mm or 29 x 1/4 in) as well as a suitable necklace to hang it from, a 3mm leather cord works well.
cm: 4.182 w x 4.554 d x 1.622 h
in: 1.646 w x 1.793 d x 0.639 h

I love it! Pity the silver one isn't available any more. How much does this one weigh, with and without balls installed?

@bakablah WOAH, that looks awesome!

@JsonAkoanART woah, magnets bearings... think of all the credit cards you can ruin! Run your pendant pass someone's train/bus ticket or even credit card, and they'll instantly be wiped!

Really, really nice. Make sure you read the description all the way through so that you, unlike me, understand that the ball bearings DO NOT come with the model. :) Oops. They're cheap, though.

Hi Rust, In North America (USA) you can get some via Mc-Master-Carr. PM for link. Cheers, Paul

This is really cool. However 6mm is an usual ball bearing size isn't it (in North America) Would it also work with 0.25"? I kinda want to get this but don't want to have to track down unusual bearings first. Great idea though!

@DesignWonk - the rails are about 5mm apart, and have a bit of give. The balls pop into place with a bit of pressure.

How do you insert the ballls in a way that ensures they won't fall out?

Hi CrafterOfThoughts, Yes the balls move. Unfortunately Shapeways are unable to print the balls with the pendant, however any suitable 6mm ball can be used. Please view the video (camera/rocket engine type icon to right of main image) Cheers, Paul
