Komainu, often called Fu-Dog in English, are statue pairs of lion-like creatures either guarding the entrance or the inner shrine of many Japanese Shinto shrines or kept inside the inner shrine itself, where they are not visible to the public.  They can sometimes be found also at Buddhist temples, nobility residences or even private homes.

komainu is meant to ward off evil spirits, modern komainu statues are almost identical, but one has the mouth open, the other closed. This is a very common characteristic in religious statue pairs at both temples and shrines. The open mouth is pronouncing the first letter of the Sanskrit alphabet, which is pronounced "a", while the closed one is uttering the last letter, which is pronounced "um", to represent the beginning and the end of all things.

@COVO Thanks for the reply Covo. What I was really wanting to know is if it is possible to verify the meaning of the Chinese characters somehow.

@erh101 The character with which the back of this ring is engraved is A. It is said that things beginning is expressed. The character with which the back of another ring is engraved is UN. It is said that the end of things is expressed. It is meaningful in being from things beginning to the end with Fu dog rings, A and UN. The personalization button was corrected. Thanks in advance.

Hi Covo. I love both the Fu Dog rings and would like to order a pair, but first could you please give some info on the source of the Chinese characters on the back of them. I'd really like to know before I commit to buying them in silver. I hope it's not too much trouble. Thanks in advance.
