Product Description
~Trissocyclus sphaeridium earrings ~ 22mm (0.87 inch).

From Haeckel's "Art Forms of Nature".

This 22mm high (0.87 inch) earring is based on one of those detailed, but somewhat idealised renderings, at the center of plate 71. Trissocyclus is a radiolarian - a type of marine protozoa (unicellular organism). The earrings would look great printed in silver & glossy silver - & also in antique bronze glossy, gold plated brass, gold plated glossy & antique bronze glossy - but would also suit transparent detail, frosted detail & frosted ultra-detail. It has a 1mm hole at the top for a jump-ring or earring hook (not provided).

The design is a simplified version of Haeckel's original rendering to make it printable at small scale, & so that it wont snag the wearers hair! A more complex desktop sculpture version will be available in the near(ish) future. The model was created using 'box' polygon-modeling techniques utilising 2D drawings or images only as reference. Designed by Orbyt in West Auckland, New Zealand - 3D models inspired by art forms in nature are available through the orbytnz Shapeways shop... Please note that as the 3D printed earring is delivered directly from Shapeways it does not include a jump-ring, or an earring hook - it's just the earring by itself - & obviously (assuming you are ordering for a person with a pair of ears) you will need to order two. As the file has been optimised to fit beneath the one million polygon limit on uploads to Shapeways I didn't want to compromise detail & the fidelity of the model to 3D print a pair in one job. Unfortunately stainless steel is not a fabrication option as the printing process will not hold the detail & wall thickness in the 3D model at this earring scale. A more accurate & detailed version will be uploaded at desktop sculpture size soon...

Professor Ernst Haeckel (pronounced Heckel) was a German biologist, philosopher & artist. A contemporary of Darwin, he held similar theoretical views on evolution & natural selection (he also coined the term 'ecology' amongst many other things). His masterwork 'Kunstformen der Natur' (Art Forms of Nature), a collection of 100 plates - meticulous drawings of life forms - was published in 1904. A pdf file is available here http://caliban.mpiz-koeln.mpg.de/haeckel/kunstformen/natur.html, & is in the public domain. It is thought to be influential on the Art Nouveau movement & remains an iconic work of 'science/art fusion'. ~ right click in the youtube window & click 'loop' ~
