As the curve that is traced by a point at the edge of a circle while it rolls, the cycloid is an elusively simple yet fundamental curve. Its simplistic elegance extends beyond mathematics and into the physical world. On either side drop a ball; one at the top and one at the middle. How quickly will they reach the bottom. Will the lower ball get there twice as fast? No. They will reach the bottom at the same time! In fact, it doesn't matter from what heights you drop the balls. They will always reach the bottom at the same time! A millimeter or 15 centimeters (half it's the track length); it doesn't matter.
