Prototype for a heavy fighter to replace the Messerschmitt 110 that first flew in 1940. It never entered service due to stability problems and (I suspect) because Messerschmitt was better able to exploit its political connections and experience gained with the Bf 110. The large 'stinger' at the end of the tail was a dive brake which reflected the Luftwaffe's continuing infatuation with dive bombing. The design incorporated many advanced concepts and may have been difficult to maintain under field conditions, particularly those on the eastern front.
