Created parametrically in 3D CAD, version pictured here is optimised for WSF material. Size and depth of the plate can vary as well as density and clustering of  cells.
Patterns are created by simulating hard body physics in 3D software at the moment of impact.

So, yeah, these are breakage patterns solidified.
