@douglascarega The Dice Collector has pictures of this set in Strong & Flexible (not black though) at http://www.dicecollector.com/THE_DICE_THEME_SHAPEWAYS.html
May 7, 2013, 10:03 pm
Hello Could you show pics of the material: Black Strong & Flexible?
May 7, 2013, 5:45 pm
Bought this set in Strong Black Plastic and I'm very happy with them. While they are obviously not as heavy as solid dice they do still roll - so I'd only worry about that if you have a 'thing' about your dice having some heft to them. They are quite strong too, so I'll have no worries tossing them in a bag with a bunch of other dice. The numbers are particularly small on the D20, so you will likely need to highlight the numbers on the dice somehow (detail painting), but I planned on doing that anyhow. I can see how they'd be even more impressive in metal.
April 13, 2013, 4:28 am
@bear_irl Yep, the Dice Collector has a few pictures of this set in plastic at http://www.dicecollector.com/THE_DICE_THEME_SHAPEWAYS.html
April 12, 2013, 2:29 am
are there any photos of these in plastic? I'm considering buying a set in violet or white eventually..
April 12, 2013, 12:46 am
Could we see a photo of the violet set?
February 3, 2013, 7:01 pm
Bought the set in stainless steel. Arrived much earlier than expected. The dices are fantastic!!
January 28, 2013, 11:44 pm
They are very light in plastic. They are still pretty in plastic, but the lack of heft makes them feel a bit odd as dice.
January 28, 2013, 1:28 am
How do these turn out in the plastic? Do they look, and roll, alright? I'd absolutely love the stainless ones, but I sadly cannot afford them yet.
January 28, 2013, 12:55 am
These are gorgeous. I got excited when I saw the under $30 price tag, but didn't realize that didn't include the stainless steel. Maybe as a present some day. :)
January 13, 2013, 6:26 pm
Shapeways explains their metal printing process on their steel material page at http://www.shapeways.com/materials/steel
January 7, 2013, 3:43 pm
@ceramicwombat Awesome, I think I'll get a set or 2 sometime. Probably a bit later in the year when I can afford them. How is the 3D printing done? I've always been interested in it, especially projected 3d printing (because of the detail it gives, done with liquid resin and a projector that hardens it from the bottom) but I don't know how you would print 3d metal.
January 7, 2013, 6:38 am
The metal version of the dice weigh a bit more than a normal plastic set of dice. Yes, they will take a bit of weight. I haven't tried stomping on them or anything, but I don't think having things piled on top of them in a bag would deform them at all.
January 7, 2013, 5:53 am
How heavy are the dice(metal)? Also how durable are they? Meaning do they bend or buckle under pressure? I wouldn't think so, being constructed out of metal they can probably take some weight. Just wondering if they can just be chucked into a carry bag and have other stuff piled on top or some other similar situation where they may have some weight put on them.
January 7, 2013, 4:40 am
Nice work, your design is also in the top ten most viewed 3D printed designs of 2012!!! http://www.shapeways.com/blog/archives/1854-10-Most-Viewed-3D-Printed-Products-of-2012-on-Shapeways.html

December 28, 2012, 3:32 pm
I just got my set in stainless steel a few days ago. They're very attractive, and the closed D10 is pretty close in design to the open D10, so that change didn't bother me any. Budget a bit of time for cleanup, as the corn-based polishing media will get captured in the details. Nothing poking at it with a plastic-headed pin couldn't solve. Hopefully the gf will like them as much as I do, since they're for her :D
December 21, 2012, 4:25 am
Yep, the Thorn Decader Die10 page (http://www.shapeways.com/model/108480/thorn-die10.html) has a pic of the new closed-top version.
December 20, 2012, 9:58 pm
Are there any pictures of the new closed top the d10 available yet?
December 20, 2012, 10:10 am
Darn, too bad - I really loved that design.
December 9, 2012, 12:00 am
The d10s all now have closed tops. The ring of spikes at the top and bottom was causing production problems and Shapeways requested that I change the design. The gold and bronze are plating over stainless steel.
December 8, 2012, 2:07 pm
I've been considering getting a set of these, but I have a few questions. One is, that I see the D10 being different in the pictures, some where the lines join at the pioints of it and some where they dont. Also, what is the gold plated on top of on the gold plated version, and is the bronze one made of solid bronze, or...?
December 8, 2012, 9:16 am
I ordered the glossy bronze stainless steel. So awesome. Very worth the wait (not too long, but they did have to make them), and worth the extra money. They roll great, and although the edges are a little sharp they are not heavy enough to damage a table unless your just slammin em down (saw some comments concerned with that). Love em. Wish I wouldnt have bought them as a present so I could keep them for myself...
November 28, 2012, 4:07 pm
Nope, there is no gray plastic option available currently. Alumide is gray, but it is not compatible with this model.
November 22, 2012, 11:59 pm
it is not in the material section but can you make these dice in gray tones. like '' old gray strong and flexible''?
November 22, 2012, 5:57 pm
These dice arrived last week and I am now the envy of my gaming group. I may have to defend myself with the D4 in upcoming weeks. The only negative I have are that the D20's and the D12 are both very very light even in the metal versions. (especially the D12). They are all useable though and I like them very much. These dice are great!
November 21, 2012, 5:16 am
Hello. No, I have not produced any spindown versions of my dice.
November 21, 2012, 3:16 am
Do these come in spindown versions on the D20? I am looking at the double sized D20 specifically

November 20, 2012, 5:35 pm
I saw your design in Wired Magazine and had to get them. Love them. Thanks Wombat.
November 8, 2012, 7:20 pm
How to see picture in other material and colors??
November 2, 2012, 8:35 pm
I haven't tried them in the new colors. They were legible in the old gray color and less so in the black or white.
October 28, 2012, 2:12 pm
What is the easiest color to read of strong & flexible material?
October 28, 2012, 1:54 pm
You can order a quantity of 10 of the single model from the page http://www.shapeways.com/model/108480/thorn-die10.html All of them are available individually, and you can make the sets as you wish.
October 7, 2012, 1:54 pm
Is it something you'd be able to supply? If needed, we could set up an invoice through paypal.
October 7, 2012, 4:37 am
I do not have a set of 10d10, and I can't post new sets due to new(er) Shapeways guidelines.
October 6, 2012, 3:43 pm
I was wondering if you had a 10 D10 dice set, or if it's be possible to make one. I primarily play World of Darkness, and would definitely buy a set of your dice, if they were an NWoD set.
October 5, 2012, 1:54 pm
Yes, if you have very steady hands, you can paint the numbers for extra clarity.
September 19, 2012, 9:31 am
this is very cool.. however, i am curious to know if one is able to put a white enamel wash to the digit for clarity?
September 19, 2012, 6:33 am
There is an answer from an individual way back in the beginning of the comments about rolling, but I was curious to see if anyone else had comment on the randomness of the rolls with the stainless steel thorn dice. thanks
September 17, 2012, 5:53 pm
How are the throws on the thorn stainless steel dice, are they consistently random ? Thanks for answering my other question.
September 17, 2012, 5:20 pm
Nope, the detail of the numbering is too fine to allow casting in silver. Shapeways did produce these in silver at one time, but they had to reprint many because of errors.
September 16, 2012, 9:08 pm
I was wondering the same thing. Can these dice be made in actual Silver, not just the color ?
September 16, 2012, 6:08 pm
Thanks for the quick response! I just ordered them, hope to see them soon. :D
September 12, 2012, 2:11 pm
Hello, Anchimayen. These are not heavy enough to dent a wooden table.
September 11, 2012, 11:00 pm
Hi Wombat, I adore these dice, but before i'm going to order them i want to know one thing: do they leave dents in wooden tables? Sorry if my English isn't that great, but i'm from Holland so English it isn't my native-tongue.
September 11, 2012, 3:56 pm
Wow!! So now I need to make a velvet lined box to carry these in.

August 24, 2012, 4:26 pm
Just arrived in gold plated matte, looking and feeling great. I'll admit I wasn't expecting the fine detail on the numbers to be there, but in the metal ones at least it certainly is! Tiny spot on one of them where the gold finish hasn't applied, but it only adds to the overall effect.
July 24, 2012, 2:31 pm
Or should I say, thank you to ceramicwombat =]
June 12, 2012, 3:59 pm
Absolutely amazing, bought in Stainless Steel. Did have some of the 'yellow grain' that a previous customer has stated but was removed really easily with a needle in about 5 minutes. Will make the perfect gift. Thank you to Shapeways for the incredibly fast production and delivery!
June 12, 2012, 3:07 pm
I haven't been receiving notifications when new comments are posted, so I'm sorry for the late response to some of your questions. @jrqsr: These are a bit larger than standard dice already, and I do have a larger size of the Thorn Die20 available. I don't have any plans to make the whole set at a larger size. @CarlosBrazil: No, the dice in the picture are stainless steel, not silver. Shapeways ships exclusively through UPS.
May 27, 2012, 9:50 pm
These just arrived in gold plated stainless steel. They look awesome and feel quite heavy and solid as a rock. Detail is amazing. These are for a present but I'm thinking of buying a second set for myself. They feel like a tool, not a toy. Absolutely love them. Only very slight criticism is that the numbers are obviously the same colour as the rest of the die so can take a bit longer to read than on plastic dice. But this could be fixed with a steady hand and a paintbrush.
May 23, 2012, 3:41 am
Hello, I'm thinking on buying the silver dices and I have some questions. Are they really made of silver or is just the color? I know you send them by UPS, can you send it by post and not by courier company? Thanks a lot!

May 9, 2012, 3:07 am
Hi! Always loved these - I even go to the page every now and then just to have a look, even though I can't afford to buy them. Why don't you make them available in aluminide? It would be ideal, both metallic and affordable. If some details are lost, I wouldn't mind.
April 19, 2012, 8:26 am
Would it be possible to get these bigger - 35 mm - or more?
April 18, 2012, 12:23 am
This set was a great addition to my collection. They feel great and they look great. They are a bit costly, but if you enjoy having a unique dice set, it will be worth every penny!
April 2, 2012, 8:20 pm
Love the Dice, Hate the price.
January 17, 2012, 10:18 pm
would love a video of someone rolling these babies!
January 9, 2012, 6:32 am
These are amazing! I know my boyfriend is going to LOVE these. I really appreciate the email notifications during each step of processing and they arrived super fast! Thanks again :)
December 19, 2011, 7:47 pm
Hello. The grains stuck in between the metal are the polishing medium used in the Shapeways barrel tumbler. I think it is ground walnut shells as is used in sandblasting. I get a bit of that in the prototypes I order from time to time, and I pick it out with an X-acto knife. It's usually not much, and I'm sorry your order has an excessive amount of polishing medium stuck in it. As far as the color, is it an even dark bronze? If so, they could have sent you an antique bronze set instead of stainless steel. Please e-mail service@Shapeways.com with a description of this problem and a picture of what you received. They are the ones who can help you out with this. Please cc me on the e-mail as well at chuck@madebywombat.com.
December 14, 2011, 8:51 pm
I'm really frustrated! I ordered a set of stainless steel but got some rusty color instead. also the spaces between the metal are filled with yellow grain - it's really filthy. I'm absolutely dissapointed!!
December 14, 2011, 1:36 pm
Thanks for liking them! Unfortunately, yesterday was the deadline for ordering from Shapeways with assured delivery in time for Christmas.
December 7, 2011, 12:08 am
any chance an order would be done in time for christmas? these are utterly gorgeous!
December 6, 2011, 8:25 pm
These are absolutely wonderful, got the set last night as a gift for my friends, now I really want some of my own.. fast delivery also, thanks Shapeways.
November 14, 2011, 10:58 pm
Alrighty then! ordered and excited to get them. I'm not into all the table top games but my boyfriend sure is and I'm positive that he's gonna love these as his christmas gift! ^-^ i'll post pictures when i get them. i ordered the stainless steel ones
November 12, 2011, 1:18 am
It is no longer available in silver. There is a $30 startup fee for each object in silver to reflect the sprueing and casting of each part. Each die can be ordered from the individual product pages in silver, but can't be ordered in silver as a full set from this page.
November 8, 2011, 3:20 am
Are the dice not available in silver anymore? I cannot find silver in the selection of materials.
November 7, 2011, 5:50 pm
@guzzo.2@hotmail.it: I don't have a picture of these in bronze, but another customer ordered them in bronze and posted pictures at http://www.flickr.com/photos/emmaus/5756068221/in/photostream/ @aqlissa32: As noted on my shop page, these are designed to be printed in metal and prints in plastic are too light to function as dice. I'm sorry the order took so long. That is not standard Shapeways behavior. @jaredb05: Did Shapeways straighten out your order? Did you send them a picture of the dice you received with the incorrect finish? Please let me know at chuck@madebywombat.com
November 6, 2011, 12:57 am
very expensive
October 23, 2011, 5:49 pm
wow guys! I'm feeling a little frustrated. my 85.00 order is outright wrong! i ordered stainless and i got brass and a cute little sorry for being slow card. whats up! i need this in stainless not brass! This not what I ordered and paid for. 1 x Thorn Dice Set with Decad Scale: 100% 6.10 x 10.90 x 3.00 cm Stainless Steel
October 22, 2011, 4:20 am
Was really disappointed with the White Strong Flexible dice I recieved... Should have read the reviews. I also waited forever for them to get here. Nearly a month... not worth the 26 dollars.
October 19, 2011, 10:17 pm
Just received my set of stainless steel thorn dice in record time! They look great and even though they are the steel version, they are not very heavy - I imagine the plastic ones will be very lightweight. so if in doubt, go steel.
September 29, 2011, 7:03 pm
have you a picture of these in antique bronze? thanks.
September 20, 2011, 5:55 pm
Well, i buy this dice for my husband and, they are awsome! the most lovely dices ever, i really glad with this buy and im from mexico
August 27, 2011, 9:10 pm
The dice in http://www.dicecollector.com/MINT22_SHAPEWAYS_CERAMICWOMBAT_THORN_DIE_20_01.jpg and http://www.dicecollector.com/MINT23_SHAPEWAYS_CERAMICWOMBAT_THORN_DIE10_DECADER.jpg are dyed examples of White Strong and Flexible. Please note that dice printed in WSF will be very light. They will be too light to really be useful as dice and will be decorative objects only.
August 16, 2011, 8:56 am
thanks for the quick response, can you tell me which pictures are of the White Strong and Flexible? nothing looks quite like it.
August 15, 2011, 11:38 pm
The Dice Collector has pictures of the dice in dyed White Strong and Flexible at http://www.dicecollector.com/THE_DICE_THEME_SHAPEWAYS.html
August 15, 2011, 11:20 pm
does anyone have pictures for the simple white plastic ones? I really don't have the money to afford the more expensive ones and I'm afraid the plastic would make them lose the effect.
August 15, 2011, 10:46 pm
Got them! Amazing design! I?m looking for a strong dice bag now :D
August 11, 2011, 9:32 am
Waiting the stainless ones for august 8th, can't wait to showoff in my next Pathfinder session :P
August 1, 2011, 9:17 am
Here are some "Antique Bronze Glossy" pictures, as promised: http://marcelostavern.blogspot.com/2011/07/thorn-dice-set-from-shapeways-in.html Really, really awesome work. Thanks for those.
July 26, 2011, 4:37 am
The Dice Collector has images of the set in gold, but I'm not sure if they are in glossy or matte. The pics are at http://www.dicecollector.com/THE_DICE_THEME_SHAPEWAYS.html To match a set in steel, you should probably go with the matte.
July 17, 2011, 11:45 pm
Hi, great work! I'm looking forward to order a thorns-set in steel and a d10 decader in gold. Which one will fit better to the set, the gold glossy or matte? Are there any pics of this colors? Greets Skotty
July 17, 2011, 7:28 pm
The Frosted Detail material page is at http://www.shapeways.com/materials/frosted_detail and includes information on its properties. I haven't ordered any of my existing dice in this material yet, but I have a prototype on the way. There isn't a significant difference between bronze and silver in how they feel and roll. Silver has a much smoother finish though. I have a picture of the Thorn Die20 in stainless steel vs. in silver at http://www.shapeways.com/openfile/93257/photos/photo45116.jpg Regardless of which material you choose (I think they are all kinda cool in their own ways), you will not receive it before July 23. It will be 10 business days for any of the plastic materials and at least 14 for any of the metals.
July 14, 2011, 9:06 pm
Also, is there a significant difference between the weight and roll of the bronze vs. the silver? Which one "looks cooler"? Do you have pictures? Aaaaand... are either the silver or bronze significantly cooler than the frosted ultra detailed? I need to take a nap before work so hopefully you can respond soon. :) Also, I know this is pushing it but I was hoping to order these for my hubby's birthday, which is July 25th, but we're celebrating it on July 23rd... So that may have some bearing also? What do you think? :)
July 14, 2011, 2:38 pm
Hey there. I am literally moments away from ordering, but I want to know what material the Frosted Ultra Detail set is made of? Is it standard acrylic like those little dice sets you buy at nerd shops? Or is it weaker/stronger? I am leaning towards the stainless steel set because come on, they're freaking amazingly awesome... but I wanted to ask about the frosted Ultra. Do you have any photos of them at all? I am having a hard time getting shapeways' page to work correctly... anyway I hope to hear back sooooon!
July 14, 2011, 2:23 pm
I see... well, just ordered in bronze glossy, will upload a pic when I get it!
July 7, 2011, 4:05 am
I don't have any pictures of the same die in both antique bronze matte and antique bronze glossy for a side-by-side comparison. The design of the d10 and the decader d10 is identical except for the numbering.
July 6, 2011, 1:13 pm
Great design! I've been dying to buy these for almost a week now, in Antique Bronze Matte/Glossy (any idea where I can find pics with the difference? The sample ones on the material info. don't really show much). Anyway, what's the difference between the D10 and the D100 (apart from the obvious numbering)? Is the design different?
July 6, 2011, 5:00 am
I have fixed this oversight, it is now available in silver.
July 3, 2011, 12:37 am
Hm-m. The Thorn Dice set without a decader is avaliable in silver, but this one, with a decader, is not. Is there any way that could be amended? I would dearly love to purchase a set.
July 2, 2011, 7:41 pm
The price in stainless steel is $89.60 USD. Shipping is included in the price.
June 26, 2011, 8:56 pm
hi again,i think tou didn't understood what i mean with "how much does it cost",i was tring to ask wats the price to send it to brazil,in the stainless steel.
June 26, 2011, 8:36 pm
Those are in stainless steel.
June 26, 2011, 6:20 pm
thank tou by the information.
June 26, 2011, 4:22 pm
Yes, Shapeways ships to Brazil. The price depends on which material you choose, and Paypal can convert Brazilian Reals to USD.
June 26, 2011, 3:02 pm
hi,im from brazil,so sorry my problably wrong english. i want to order one of these kit but i don't now ifyou send it to were, and if you do,how much is it? thank you.
June 26, 2011, 12:05 am
I cannot thank you enough, ceramicwombat, for these dice. They are the talk of my gaming groups and I'm sending more business your way every time I show them around. The stainless steel (the ones I got) are absolutely breathtaking. One note to those those get these, especially in metal: you will want a heavy duty dice bag; these things are sharp in every sense of the word!
April 27, 2011, 5:39 am
I just received my order. Shapeways did an incredible job getting the package here (GA, USA) in the time frame given. The designs are stunning! I went the cheap route and ordered the plastic ones. The level of detail is amazing. I didn't experience any issues with there being burrs in the cut-outs. They are definitely light weight though, but I expected that going into the order. Unfortunately, the acrylic wasn't an available option (and I noticed that black plastic is no longer listed). I would recommend to anyone considering buying these to pony up for the stainless steel (the acrylic may also be a decent option, but I cannot say how much more heft it will have). If you can't get a set, then try a D20 or D 12. The D20 is more useful, but I prefer the design on the 12. @ cw: Best of luck with getting these out there. I look forward to being the only one in my area to have these awesome dice until you can mass produce these puppies. Maybe I can figure a way out to get a little more weight into them. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
April 26, 2011, 6:40 pm
I guess when Shapeways added the new acrylic material, they set it to "not available" for all models. I have changed the settings for all of my models so they are available in the Frosted Detail and Frosted Ultra Detail.
April 25, 2011, 11:41 pm
@ceramicwombat Is there a specific reason why these(and the other sets) are not available in acrylic materials? I would be very interested in buying almost all of the sets if they were.
April 25, 2011, 6:40 pm
Yes, the plastic materials are very light and are not as durable as metal. It depends on the material you choose when you order. The plastics are plastic, the metals are metal.
April 20, 2011, 8:44 am
guys! The Matrial is PLASTIC. I thought it was kind of metal and I am not sattisfied with the quality of the Plastic. Its far away from "stable" and if you don't take care while using it, it gets out of shape. So for everyone, who wants this for deko it is ok, but for real use it is for me wasted money. Sorry about that, but reality is as it is...
April 20, 2011, 5:37 am
I purchased these for my husband in the indigo color. Not exactly sure what material it is that was used though. It's super lightweight and almost feels too fragile b/c of the intricate design and how thin some of the areas are. They're dice though so it's not like he's going to be man handling these heh. They are absolutely beautiful though and I'll probably order more for him in the future. Maybe in stainless steel next time :)
April 15, 2011, 3:04 pm
It's ashamed some jerk keeps going through and voting everybody items down.
April 8, 2011, 1:12 am
Yes, Shapeways ships to Mexico. As far as I know, they ship everywhere except Russia.
April 5, 2011, 1:54 am
¿you take order from another country? i'm from Mexico and really want a set of steel dice! thanks..
April 4, 2011, 2:50 pm
A difference in weight between the different sides would come from the different volumes of the numbers. Theoretically, a bias might be detected over thousands of trials. In practice, I haven't noticed a bias in any of them.
April 1, 2011, 4:06 am
I just asked this in the forums, but then realized this might be a better place for it. Are these properly weighted dice?
March 31, 2011, 2:00 pm
The picture is of the set in stainless steel. The inking on the pinwheel set is with black gesso. I paint the whole die with gesso (acrylic model paint works too), wait for it to dry, and then rub the whole die with a cloth until the paint rubs off the high points.
March 31, 2011, 8:53 am
Hi, just wanted to say I've checked out all your dice designs and they're all really fantastic. I'm thinking about picking up this set for my birthday, but I have a couple questions I was hoping you could answer. In the bottom picture they look nicely "weathered" and have a great color. Is this the matte bronze finish? Or just stainless steel? I also noticed on your pinwheel set the caption says that they're inked. I think I have some idea of what that means, but how does one go about inking these, and with what?

Hello. I use these for our weekly D&D sessions, and I have not noticed a bias in any of the dice. They roll much like their normal counterparts do. The dice in my Overstuffed set do tend to roll forever, but the dice in my other sets behave themselves.

I am seriously thinking about ordering some of these dice but my big question is; how do they roll? Are you getting good "randomness" from them? Do they stop almost immediately upon hitting the surface of the table or do they travel for ever?

I add an underscore to 6 and 9 on d10s and above to let people distinguish between the two numbers.

I was hoping you would share with us how you tell the difference between the 6 and the 9 images on the dice that go above 10.

Thanks for the speedy response Ceramicwombat, now I just have to work out how I explain the cost to my wife ;)

The material in the picture above is stainless steel.

I mean the Thorn Dice set in case it isn't clear :)

I adore these dice, but sadly I dont think Ill ever be able to afford them in the metallic finish :( In the picture above, which material is that?

The first die on the fourth row is stainless steel. Sometimes the finish on stainless steel varies, and it looks like the finish on that one came out a bit dull. You should receive them by Christmas if you order them now in plastic, but if you order a set in metal, they might not arrive in time.

These are truely awsome. I want to order some for my brother for Christmas. I was looking at the dice collecter's link above and saw a color of one that I want to order but I don't know which color it is. It is the first die on the 4th row under the title Thorn. I think it's either white strong and flexible or transparent detail. Can you help me out? How long does it normally take to ship? Will I be able to get them before Christmas? You should be proud of your work. :)

Thanks for the snappy reply, wombat. Seems like refreshing the window caused an accidental double post. I will definitely order some soon.

I have not tried this set in glossy gold, but Kevin Cook did and the pictures are at http://www.dicecollector.com/THE_DICE_THEME_SHAPEWAYS.html. The finish does not add an appreciable amount of thickness or obscure detail. I have not tried inking them either. The d20 is the only one in the set that is difficult to read in low light or from far away.

I'm seriously considering getting a set of these in gold glossy finish. Have you tried this particular set yourself with the gold finish? Does it add thickness so that some of the intricate details in this particular set would get lost? Also, have you tried painting these black and then polishing? The preview image doesn't seem like so. The design is wicked, that's for sure. Just mildly concerned about readability from far away.
