d8 with working gears. No practical purpose for the gears, but they look cool.

UNTESTED!

I''ve never tried to do moving parts let alone something as precision oriented as gears. It looked good in the modeling process. I've ordered one and I''ll post pics.

Given that http://www.shapeways.com/model/278646/turning-triple-gear-necklace.html is printable and _works_ even without assembly, maybe this could be done right out of the box, if done in Frosted Detail. The Frosted Detail support material is some waxy stuff that is melted out of the model, so it can escape from pretty tight spaces. Any possibility of reviving this for a try in FD?

I want one too! Hope you can get it working, even in WSF. I can see there might be problems in metal; the "snap-together" stuff doesn't work so well then. Metal isn't flexible enough.

How is the test going? ... I would really love to have a die like this ... especially if this could ever be made in metal

Please email me at the contact at dicecollector.com when you have the bugs worked out of this beauty ... I am really excited about have a working model of this die

Bummer ... thanks for being the guinea pig on this one ... I have several dice that 'just dont quite make it'

Got my die this week. Managed to break two posts. Need to rework it with thicker parts. :(

Sounds great ... Please let us know the final results :)

Problem resolved. Also made it so the faces won't shift when you turned the gears.

Damn. Found a major design flaw today. Time to rework it. :(

Every piece of this has at least one section that's only 1 mm thick, so WSF and white detail (and their color variants) are the only possibilities at this time. Depending on the flexibility the detail material might not work either.

A metal version of this die would be truly amazing ... but i am afraid that a) the tolerances of this model in combination with Shapeways manufacturing techniques may not be able to produce a working model b) given that this is friction fit ... I am afraid it may not be able to 'snap together' in metal :( ... I am looking forward to seeing your results ... In general 10-14 days delivery time from the date of placing the order ... has been my experience for plastic models from Shapeways ... http://www.dicecollector.com/THE_DICE_THEME_SHAPEWAYS.html

Changed the material availability of this model (and others) this morning. I got a notice that the Spiky design wouldn't print in aluminide. I'll probably end up reworking all my models so they can be printed in metal. Ah, the joys of learning a new craft....

LOL .. I really do need to start tracking how long my orders take ... I think I am on order #27 now ... and you are correct ... it usually takes about 2 weeks for non metal ... I will be very interested in seeing the results

I didn't order it in metal, just the WSF. The 17 parts snap together. Put a numbered disc through the hole on a gear and snap it into the spindle. Repeat. Is the two week wait for items typical, or can I get my hopes up of getting it sooner?

Cool ... did you order it in metal? ... is this item 17 separate parts? .. if so ... how are they assembled?
