A beautiful example of a breastplate - Gorget - from an arm of the British military.
Here you can see the forerunner of the simple breastplate. This gorget is designed to protect the neck from edged weapons. Notice the piece at lower right... this would be where the later decorative breastplate would come from.

Breastplate armour changed over the centuries from practical life-saving neck and full-torso armour to its modern day incarnation as fashionable jewellery.
Designed to be worn at chest level (hence the name!) this piece could be strung with leather or chain. The official name for this piece of armour was a Gorget.
