The Royal Aircraft Factory S.E.5 was a British biplane fighter aircraft of the First World War. Although the first examples reached the Western Front before the Sopwith Camel and it had a much better overall performance. Together with the Camel, the S.E.5 was instrumental in regaining allied air superiority in mid-1917 and maintaining it for the rest of the war

@mike Werner Hi Mike, there were two versions of the SE5a. One with the HS 8b with the high shaft (geared) 4 blade prop and one with the Wolsey Viper 200hp ungeared - this one looked a lot like the SE5, including the low shaft position but had a slightly different radiator pattern. The HS 8b powered 5a has a slightly smaller front.

The SE5 had a 150 HP Hispano-Suiza 8a engine. The SE5a had a 200 hp Hispano-Suiza 8b engine. The most visable difference is the nose/engine cowl of the aircraft. Sorry to report that the nose/engine cowl of this model looks like the SE5a - not the SE5. To make the SE5 a modeler will need to check some drawings or photos of the SE5 and then shave a wedge of the nose back to the leading edge of the lower wing.
