I started working with braid designs to make a wedding ring and matching bangles for my fiance. In these designs the braid is wrapped into a cylindrical shape, like these bangles or this ring. Playing with the concept some more, I turned the braid on its side and swept it around in a flat circle. The result is this pendant! It looks a bit like a starburst or a flower. This design makes a set with these earrings.
The wire that traces the braid has a pentagonal shape, so one side of the pendant shows a flat face and the other side is ridged. The photos show the design printed in stainless steel, which also gives it a nice heft.
The gaps in the braid are large enough to fit a cord or thin chain through one of the gaps near the periphery as well as through the large central hole. I have some chokers made using this pendant on my Etsy shop, although not in the full variety of materials that Shapeways offers.
Note: Due to the printing process Shapeways uses for stainless steel, the color of stainless steel parts varies from piece to piece. Some parts come out silver, some are more bronzeish (like the one shown here). If you want a consistent bronze color, you should choose one of the 'bronze steel' materials.
