Nifty Fifty (Canon 50mm F1.8) Follow Focus Adapter

Nifty Fifty (Canon 50mm F1.8) Follow Focus Adapter 3d printed Mechanical parts Accessories

This adapter ring lets you use your Canon 50mm F1.8 lens (AKA the Nifty-Fifty) with the HONDO Garage 50-Dollar Follow Focus (and most other follow focuses) in either belted or geared mode.

See the HONDO Garage 50-Dollar Follow Focus Here

The Nifty-Fifty is a great and very affordable prime lens, but it's got this wonky focus ring that's skinny and tapered, making it impossible to use with a follow-focus for cinematic work. But we've changed that. The HONDO Garage Nifty-Fifty Adapter snaps onto the focus ring of your lens, providing an industry-standard 32-pitch (.8 mod) gear ring for use with most follow focuses. It also has an MXL-pitch timing belt groove designed specifically for use with our own Kickstarter-funded 50-Dollar Follow Focus (shown in the photo.)

A lot of work went into this model. The Adapter snaps onto the front of the lens and requires no glue or other fastening methods. If you opt for the black material, it almost looks like part of the original lens when installed. A lot of our follow focus customers have asked for this, so here it is.

Naturally, it doesn't include the camera, the lens, or the lovely follow focus.

INSTRUCTIONS: When you get your Nifty-Fifty Adapter, you'll install it by gently pressing it onto the front of your lens. Note that on the inside of the ring, there are eight drive dogs (little ridges) that must engage with the teeth on your focus ring. Slowly rotate the adapter as you press it in until the drive dogs engage the focus ring teeth. Once engaged, continue gently pressing until the snap tabs snap over the back side of the little ridge behind the focus ring. That's it! If the adapter makes the focus ring difficult to turn, just take some fine sandpaper and sand the inner ring a bit. It shouldn't take much. There are variations in the print and variations in the lens manufacture. Sometimes they add up in the wrong way and you get a tight fit. It's only a few thousandths of an inch, so some light sanding will take care of it. You want as tight a fit as possible without binding. I could open the hole up a bit but then it would be too sloppy for some people. It's easier to sand away material than it is to add it.

@Marcjwebbmusic I believe Shapeways ship to the UK. If not, contact me via hondogarage.com and I can order one and ship it to you . I've been working on seamless gears for other lenses as well. Let me know if you have a request.

Hi. Hope you are well, just come across this bit of kit and looks fantastic. I really want one maybe 2 and was wondering if you are able to post to uk, also would you be able to make these for other lens sizes as this is far better than the tension belt types that are available

@CharlyVandedrinck I don't have one in front of me at the moment, but my recollection is that the front of the barrel retracts about 1/16" inside the adapter.
February 14, 2014, 5:46 pm
@wileydavis sorry for the questions, but does the adapter cover the barrel a lot when the barrel is at the maximum inside the lens?
February 14, 2014, 4:58 pm
@wileydavis hmmm, Yes I do use a step-up ring, that might cause a problem
February 14, 2014, 4:46 pm
@CharlyVandedrinck The lens barrel passes through the adapter, so your filters will still attach to the lens' thread. You might get some clearance issues if you use step-up rings, but filters sized for that lens should work fine.

@wileydavis , i have one more question before i buy it, I have a ND filter for my 50mm 1.8, with a 52mm thread, will I still be able to put filters on after I use the focus ring mod? And if so, what thread size is it? Thanks

@wileydavis Okat thanks, can't wait to get my hands on this amazing product!

@CharlyVandedrinck That sounds about right from the information Shapeways provides (they do the shipping.) You might have an import duty to pay, but I doubt it based on the value.

@wileydavis , I want this product shipped to Belgium, is that possible? And I saw that shipping costs to Belgium was 8 dollars and a bit. Is this true, it seems surprisingly low? I just want to make sure I don't order it and then I have to pay 40 bucks in shipping. Thanks

Just got mine, works like a charm! The only unfortunate thing is that, with an adapter ring, the attachment won't let me use the closest focal lengths, it simply gets in the way
February 7, 2014, 7:15 pm
@lfarrow Yes. it will work with any follow focus that uses 32-pitch (.8mod) lens gears...so that includes the Dfocus.

Does this work with the D- Focus follow focus systems?

Love it. Wish I would've had one a few years ago. Would've made my 1st a lot happier.

I also had to sand the inner ring down a bit, but not a lot and no big deal. Now it's a smooth as butter. Thanks for such a great idea.

@wileydavis Excellent product! Filmmakers definitely needed something like this. I did a quick product review and shared it with other low-budget filmmakers. I hope you don't mind. See my review: http://youtu.be/IzqzggkSB7c

@wileydavis Sounds great! Can't wait for models in the future!

@Pootrain13 Glad to hear. There is a certain amount of variance in the 3D printing and some variance in the diameter of the lenses. The adapter seems to work best with a fairly tight fit over the lens barrel. I erred on the side of tight but if lots of folks end up having the same issue I can open it up a bit.

Awesome and works great! I had to sand the inside ring down a tiny bit in order for the lens to extend when I pulled focus but other then that I love it!

@Ledd Yes, the filter threads are still accessible when using this adapter.

Will the filter threads still be accessible?
