This is an iPhone 4/4S cover with moving gears I developed for Engineers, Designers and Mechanically minded people, however it seems to attract a broader audience so I've got it here for everyone to experience.

You get this baby printed, you get a sense of achievement because you assembled it, you spin those little 1.25 module gears and admire it in awe. The gears have odd and even number of teeth just to make it that bit more challenging when working out ratios, it's a great visual to see what direction what gear is going in a gear train. You won't even have to turn on your phone and it still works.

DOWNLOAD the template and colour it in Microsoft Paint or your favourite image editor to try out different colour combinations.

Please note that 3d printing is not perfect even though I've made all adjustments to make this product fit and move as good as possible in some cases some manual adjustments may be necessary.

OPTIONAL STEP: SLS 3d Printing of Strong & Flexible Material produces a porous surface which collects dirt and grime, before assembly you may want to give the parts a light spray of clear varnish or lacquer for extra protection, especially if you're going for light colours.

@singseraphim thanks for the awesome and honest review! Yeah, I found Superglue to be the best option to glue the rivets the one I have hasn't lost anything for over a year now. Cheers!

Okay, now that I have had this phone case for several months and I absolutely love having it and here are some things: I got a white case with black gears, which looks awesome but the white immediately started getting dirty the moment I took it out of the package. I had a couple false starts with the clear coating, I first tried nail polish (it turns out to be kind of sticky when it dries) and then used spray-on clear coating. It worked pretty well. What I didn't try was spray-painting it white, which might have worked better. Use really strong glue when assembling the gears. Regular glue didn't really work out. Be prepared for some gears to come off (for me it was a pretty rare thing), they are really easy to put back on. The problem is that the little hubs that hold the gears on are really easy to lose. I bought another set of those but I can usually find the pieces if they come off. The case is super strong. I have dropped my phone face down on concrete and it didn't even get scratched (please don't try to test this out on your phone) and it is very flexible plastic too. Seriously this case is so much fun to have. It's really nice to have something to do with your hands when you are bored. Also, be prepared for people to ask you about it :) I would definitely recommend this phone case.

@DanoStarkG that's a particular type of machine from Stratasys that can produce multi-material parts I don't believe Shapeways has this machine so you might have to contact Stratasys and find out who has such a machine that provides 3d printing services however be prepared to pay premium prices it won't be cheap for a one off.
