The Scrappies - A series of originally designed small sculptures in scrap metal-look.

The body parts of the Scrappies are inspired by everything that can be found in a scrapyard: Old bolts and nuts, rusty coils, pipes, parts of ball bearings, tin cans, and more.

The figurines are worked out in minute detail, including "rust holes" and traces of an alleged "welding". The scrap metal look gives the characters their own special, irresistible charm.

Height (with stand): 18 cm

The figurines are created in the 3DP process (three-dimensional printing) from steel and bronze, from an aluminium-polyamide composite or from a gypsum-based, full-colored composite.

Products from this series are available as small, medium and large sized figurines; in white, black, colored, in steel, bronze and gold.

The figurines, while still produced by Shapeways, are not available directly through Shapeways, but you can still get one! To locate the nearest store for you, to order one or to enquire about wholesale possibilities, please send an e-mail to info@trompe.nl.

A fluid, flexible, fabric like sheet made of hinged tessellating triangles. This will fold, curve and crumple into random complex shapes, but it is based on a simple geometry, so it could be used as a guide for building larger objects. It blends technology and craftsmanship, enabling people to step back from the computer to play about with free form physical modeling and to happen upon surprising forms and structures which they can hold in their hands. I see it as a tool for designers, for creating anything from sculpture to furniture, architecture to jewelry. there are 4 sheets which can be clipped together in different configurations.

This model is a 3D Celtic Knot cube generated using the seed 12. It matches with the 2D version that uses the same seed and can be found here: http://shpws.me/3L1b.

Like the 2D version, the model has four loops and the weave has been set to add a gap between the threads where they cross. In the final print though, many of the threads have fused together at the intersections. Nonetheless I'm really impressed with the results and the print works very well in spite of the really quite thin (0.7mm diameter) threads.

Note that the colour image is purely to illustrate the four different threads. The model doesn't actually contain colour data.

This model is a "2D" version of the Celtic Knot with seed 12. It matches with the 3D version that uses the same seed and can be found here: http://shpws.me/3L17.

The model has been successfully printed using WSF polished, with nice results. The model has four loops and although the weave was supposed to allow a gap between the threads where they cross, they're actually fused in the final print.

A Celtic knot object generated as a three dimensional knot constrained within a cube.

The knot is made up of 14 looped paths that intertwine to create a single object. The pattern uses the same general set of mathematical rules as traditional two dimensional celtic knotwork, but generatised into the third dimension.

The model has been successfully printed and feels quite sturdy using white strong & flexible. The diameter of each piece of 'string' is 3mm and the model is just under 8cm along each edge.

A wireframe geodesic sphere with small holes at the vertices made with TopMod. I designed this to transfer a geodesic design onto a ball as shown in my profile photo. After receiving the printed model I cut it into 2 hemispheres and put the ball inside. I connected the halves together using small sections of wire insulation of just the right diameter. I then inflated the ball to fill the model and marked the vertices through the small holes using a fine pen.

This is an MRI of my brain. I converted the DICOM files to a polygon mesh with OsiriX ( http://www.osirix-viewer.com/ ) and then smoothed the mesh with Blender ( http://www.blender.org/ ) Feel free to use this anywhere, but If you use this somewhere, I'd love to know!!!

This model is a version of the 3D Celtic Knot with seed 2, generated with thicker walls and as a single shell to allow printing in bronze. The knot has 10 loops, but the threads fuse together where they cross to create just a single shell.

The photographs show the result in bronze. If you want a different material I'd recommend going for one of the models with thinner threads as the result is more delicate.

However, as a bronze model, I'm really impressed with the results. It's very sturdy and has a good weightiness to it, while still managing to be quite delicate and with a great finish. I'm amazed at how well its been 3D printed. This model is a version of the 3D Celtic Knot with seed 2, generated with thicker walls and as a single shell to allow printing in bronze.
