Dog is a robot, built by Eli Vance to protect his daughter Alyx as a child. Dog's original model was around one meter in height, but as Alyx grew older, she began adding upgrades and new parts to Dog, and he towers around 2.5 meters tall at the time of Half-Life 2.

Here is a big desktop version full detailed from the game with nothing added to his body, just a lot of thickness adjustment.

Here is a design for all you steampunk fanatics and fans of all things mechanical!!!

This is a steampunk themed desk toy consisting of a cube with 28 gears, all of which rotate in a mesmorising pattern by just rotating one of the gears. In the middle of the cube is a tray that can be used to hold paperclips and other small things. This object is 3D printed as one piece, already fully assembled when it leaves the 3D printer!

The design also comes with a stand so it can stand up on a desk and a lockable lid which is placed on the top of the cube and is locked and unlocked by rotating the gears (the lid locks at the centers of all 4 sides below the gears in the lid). Interchangeable mechanical add-ons may be designed in the future that can be put in place of this lid and driven by the rest of the cogs.

How it works...
This design consists of a cube with 28 gears, on each of 4 sides of the cube are 7 gears: 2 large outer ones that move in opposite directions, the outermost gear has handles on it so it can be easily rotated, the motion between the 2 large cogs is reversed due to 5 smaller gears set within the cube in a similar layout to a planetary gearbox to reverse the gear's direction on each of these 4 faces. Each of these sets of gears on the 4 faces are all liked through the big gear on each of the 4 faces meshing at 90 degrees with the big gear on each of the 2 neighboring sides. This means that if any one gear is spun, they all spin in a memorizing pattern.

For a smoother motion of the Geared Cube use a lubricant suitable for plastic parts, I used a PTFE lubricant from an aerosol can and this was very effective in reducing the friction.

A Konoid is an artistic representation of a mathematical object called Sphericon.

It’s hard to believe that being placed on a slanted flat surface it rolls freely in a straight line.
Well it wobbles a little, but it will not stop.
It's available in three different sizes and many materials

From Wolfram MathWorld:
A sphericon is the solid formed from a bicone with opening angle of 90 degrees (and therefore with a=r=h) obtained by slicing the solid with a plane containing the rotational axes resulting in a square cross section, then rotating the two pieces by 90 degrees and reconnecting them.

A sphericon has a single continuous face and rolls by wobbling along that face, resulting in straight-line motion. In addition, one sphericon can roll around another.

Ok, this one is not a puzzle (unless you're a physics student trying to figure out how it works), but it is a pretty cool toy. Spin the top, and it starts to wobble, then spin sideways, and finally it jumps up on its stem and spins upside down until it stops. Check out the video to see the Tippe Top in action.

Tippe Top has been successfully tested in the "Strong & Flexible" materials.

Have fun!

Looney Gears is a strange eccentric planetary gearing system. Whereas normal planetary gear systems are symmetrical, this one has no symmetry whatsoever.

This particular set of gears was the result of a challenge by Oskar to Andreas Röver in 2006. Andreas found this nice set of all-primary-numbers gears which is about 0.01% exact.

When Oskar made the Looney Gears, he made the conjecture that there do not exist exact solutions for this type of eccentric planetary gear systems. After seeing Oskar's video of Looney Gears, Bill Somsky proved that there are actually huge numbers of exact solutions for Looney Gears. These exact solutions are now called "Somsky gears". Somsky's discovery and proof showed that Oskar's conjecture (that there are no exact solutions) is wrong.

A 3D rolling ball maze with a bone-like matrix in a clear cube| pirate pocket puzzle |Reach the treasure to solve the maze

Color and material options are in the "Select Material" drop-down list on the right. If you want an option not shown or would like a quantity discount, please click on the "Contact Designer" button to write me an email.

A pirate chest recently washed ashore containing a never-before-seen hand carved puzzle. The carvings on the chest indicate that the puzzle is a 3D maze map through the caves on Dragon Fang’s island where the vast treasure from the pirate ship Black Lion is hidden. You open the chest only to find that the main body of the maze looks eaten away to the “Bare Bones.” Luckily, there is a clear case in the chest as well, and a small brightly colored ball that will help guide you. The ball fits into the maze at the round mouth of the cave maze in the corner of the cube. The maze then slides into the clear case; it is a perfect fit. You shove the sturdy case with its precious map into your pocket. The question is, can you solve the mystery of this maze and find the treasure? The carvings on the chest show that your goal is shown as another round ring with the remains of an “X” along its border.

To get there, roll the ball along the bones of the maze to try to reach the treasure. Your ball can travel up, down, fore and aft, port (left) and starboard (right) to travel through the maze. The clear walls allow you to easily see exactly where you are in the maze, and which directions can be tried next, but getting there is harder than it looks. Argggh, there have been plenty of “Bones” cleverly placed along the tunnels to trip up any unwary pirates and keep them from reaching the treasure. These can lead you astray or plunge you into a deep pit.

The “X Marks the Spot” where your treasure is found. If you reach the treasure you are not done yet matey! You have to return safely back to the mouth of the cave. Be wary though, there are new perils on the way back, and many pirates have never found their way back out. The true brave of heart can enter again to see if they can find the treasure again, this time, faster!

Good Luck Maties!

This model is a two pack of the Bare Bones mazes, each with it's own maze ball. The 3D maze fits snuggly inside the 2 inch by 2 inch by 2 inch clear plastic cube. The clear cube also serves as a display quality case for this clever pirate work of art. This clear plastic display cube is sold separately, and is available for around $3. Use the link below to purchase it with free shipping. Note that this plastic cube display case is part of this rolling ball 3d maze puzzle and is required for the proper working of the maze. For this two pack of mazes you will need to order two cases.

Medium Size BCW Maze Puzzle Display Case for Bare Bones

Display Case for Bare Bones for UK Customers

Start by setting one of the “U” shaped halves of the clear case on a table with the sides of the “U” facing up. Before putting the “Bare Bones” maze in the case, orient it so the circular mouth of the cave (the one in the corner) is on the bottom. Place the ball on the bottom of the “U” of the case, such that when you next slide “Bare Bones” down into the case half, the circular mouth of the maze goes over the ball. Next carefully slide the top half of the case on. The photos and video above illustrate how this is done. You are now ready to start solving this maze puzzle.

Many a pirate has been lost in the cave, but have no fear - you can slide open the two halves of the case and the ball can easily be shaken out to start solving the maze game over again.

You can easily color the ball to make it show up even better in the maze. A quick and simple method is to use highlighter markers, or Sharpie colored markers. Enamel spray paint for plastic models also works very well. Spray paint was used to color the ball in the photos.

The clear case is very sturdy, so you can carry this maze puzzle around in your pocket or your bag. When not being played, this unique new type of maze can be displayed as a fascinating work of art. Set it on your desk or shelf, everyone will be curious to know what it is and want to give it a try.

This new maze design uses thicker rods for the maze. They are also rounded off so the maze structure looks like a skeletal matrix of linked up bones.

Email me with your questions. Also comments or suggestions for new mazes you would like to see are always welcome. To send me an email just click on the “Contact Designer” button at the top of this page.
