I usually model in Rhino, which is a great program for modelling machinery, vehicles, etc., but not really suitable for organic modelling (animals, people, etc.).

Now I would like to experiment with organic modelling, with a view to printing the models at Shapeways.

What software would forum members recommend?

Many thanks in advance

Try Sculptris, it's amazing and free. It works best with a pressure sensitive tablet [wacom].

Sculptris is stand-alone and free software... it works well, but has a few quirks, be sure to save often.

I made this squid using a base .obj model imported into Sculptris for organic 'adjustment'.

Sculptris is a standalone application [mac or pc]. Zbrush is not required to run it.

This video is a good place to begin your 3d sculpting journey:
