Amen brother!

My first shapeways order, about a month ago, was only some $13, so UPS didn't charge me anything.

Today my second order arrives, value of about $31... and the UPS guy tells me that there's an "import fee" of $15. I was somewhat sleepy so I didn't really think about it and just got out my checkbook and paid it.

And now I look a few things up and find out what rip-off artists UPS are.

Only to a tiny amount (like say, 5%) of the blame do I put at the feet of Shapeways. My items did come well wrapped in bubble-wrap, but they were sent in a box measuring something like 8" x 10" x 5" ... Shapeways could have easily used like a quarter of the bubble-wrap and fit my 3 items into a box less than a quarter of that size (a box of maybe 5" x 3" x 4" could have just as easily worked). Though after reading a few UPS horror stories, I can understand why Shapeways would use so much bubble-wrap and such a big box for such small items.

In future I'm gonna make sure my orders stay under $20, and if UPS demands extra money again I'll tell them to take their bogus fees and eat them.

Another alternative to sprues is to build a protective cage around the items:
http://shpws.me/nmmn

The intent of the handling fee is to prevent very very very tiny fragile items from being broken during printing/cleaning/shipping, and to prevent an expensive amount of manual labor to retrieve multiple individual parts out of the printer.

Think of it as.. if an item would break when squeezed slightly between your forefinger and thumb then it needs protection. If you have a large number of items to print in a single pass, they need to be "linked" so that they are effectively one item, and can be handled as one item. Sprues or Cages are two common methods.

The cost is, basically, for each separate file you upload and order.

For some materials, a file is allowed to containt separate objects (e.g.WSF material). - see the material design rules.

However, to Shapeways the cost they have to account for is per each separate, distinct, loose item that the operator of the 3d-printer has to handle. I guess they would frown on a file containing a hundred separate objects.

The usual solution is to have the items attached to a "sprue" linking them all together.

Here is an example:
 http://www.shapeways.com/model/857115/1-100-15-mm-pierced-ma cedonian-aspides-x-64.html
I am new to all this and looking to make a prototype for an idea I have.

I am going to need several hundred very simple identical pieces which will be approx 1cm cubed in size. What I wanted to know was whether the handling fee per model was applicable for each piece as that would make a huge difference in the cost (eg with sandstone where it would either be $0.75 or $3.75 per piece).

If someone could let me know I'd really appreciate it.

Hi Christel, Joop,

There appears to be lot of confusion.

This model:-
http://www.shapeways.com/model/790748

Had been rejected first rejected (although only the black version not the white). Then after inspection it is now ready to print and Joost replied on MAY 22, 2013 | 03:35PM CEST:-
>We can print the model for you in black, strong and flexible.
>Do you want me to place the order or are you able to do it.

However my email last email sent five days ago ( MAY 22, 2013 | 10:48PM CEST ) relates to:-
http://www.shapeways.com/model/1068429 "Cuffelink Metal Top And Bottom"

This was shape was rejected after your email. Although the model has been printed many times before in metal, The latest model has one shape removed in an area unrelated to the feedback on got the rejection email. In fact the lower part that got changed has been accepted for printing in that same order:-
http://www.shapeways.com/model/1068432

Hence the full part (http://www.shapeways.com/model/1068429 ) is identical to model placed in order numbers....
* Order #208369
* Order #195128
* Order #160674
* Order #146336
(More orders are available in my order history)

I have yet to received an answer on this model and therefore can not answer the first question, until the status of this is known,

Regards,
Just wondering, if I have a model which needs to be split into two parts (such as for allowing some sections to be printed in another material), how do I make it so that there's a button that lets people buy both?

I've seen some models (mainly multi-piece twisty puzzles) with a link on the page that lets you buy, for instance, 1xPartA + 26xPartB (where PartA and PartB would be uploaded separately, I presume). That's the sort of link I want to create, I just can't seem to find a button that lets me do that.

Would appreciate any help on the matter.

Uh-oh, seems like your webpages need a bit more love
One part of the outdated production time info is on support/shipping , the other (that mentions "glass")
in the FAQ page ("How long does it take before i get my product").
FAQ also has entries like"What is work in progress", "What is the gallery", "What is 'My Shapeways'",
"What is model state" that appear to refer to one of the earlier site designs, and
"Do you support a shipping address different from my own" fails to mention that
shipping and billing addresses have to be within the same country (IIRC from the forum)

Some old information on those pages. Which pages did you get that info from?

Sandstone and Plastics are now 8 business days. Dyed strong and flexible is listed at 12 business days, my last order of dyed took 6 days (4 business days!). Polished Alumide is also 12. Stainless is 12 days, with a coating 16. Silver is 20, and Ceramics are listed at 13 days. The last one in your quote, Glass, is no longer available.

FreeRangeBrain wrote on Fri, 17 May 2013 20:17

This is not an official reply, I don't work for Shapeways, and haven't been on here all that long...

I think the 10, 14, or 21 days is the production time, not the time to clear your payment. The "3 to 5 days" part is extra time for the check to clear into the Paypal system. When I have ordered (using credit through Paypal) I receive an email noting the receipt of order and comencement of production within minutes, and can see the order's progress on my Orders page.

Ok. Thanks for the help. That makes way more sense.

I also found this in one of the FAQ's:

Quote:

We try to get the product to you within 10 working days for plastics and sandstone. 14 working days for the metal products and 21 working days for the glass products. We count from the moment we receive your payment. This means within 10, 14 or 21 working days if you pay directly by credit card or Paypal. If you pay with an E-check on Paypal it takes 3-5 working days for your check to get cleared. You need to add these to the standard working days for the material that you order.

No idea why its not stated so clearly on the shipping page, but its solid information. Thanks for your help.

I'm reading the shipping page and I'm a little confused by the wording. Could anyone help me out?
From this page: http://www.shapeways.com/support/shipping

Quote:

For personalize your own the delivery time starts when the designer has adjusted your product. For all other orders we count from the moment we receive your payment. This means within 10, 14 or 21 working days if you pay directly by credit card or Paypal. If you pay with an E-check on Paypal it takes 3-5 working days for your check to get cleared. You need to add these to the standard working days for the material that you order.

So, for clarification the process will go like this:
1- Payment processed
2- Design cleared
3- Shipped by UPS

On step one, it can take anywhere from 10 to 21 days to process the payment -if payed with credit card or Paypal. Yet only 3-5 days if E-Check (also using Paypal). This doesn't make much sense to me as either way Paypal is what's holding up the process...

I want to pay with a AMEX, but the idea of waiting almost a month is making me consider opening a Paypal account with e-checking. Is the time difference between the methods really this drastic?

Thanks for your time.

To add to what mkroeker says, when you create a model, the default material is WSF (White Strong and Flexible). If you Edit your model you can choose which material you want to be the default (i.e. the one that is shown when someone goes to your shop).

As indicated, some materials may not be allowed by SW because the model does not conform to the 'rules' and you can further limit the selection yourself. But also note: just because the material is available for your model on the Edit Model page or the purchase model material options menu does not mean that it can necessarily be printed.

First order is no different from any later ones - you can choose from the available materials.
Just keep in mind that material properties, and hence design limits, are different across the set, so some materials may be automatically made unavailable, e.g. when the model would be too big to fit in a certain printer, or too delicate for a certain material.
Designers may also further limit the choices for models in their shop, e.g. if they believe that the rough white plastic
would not do their delicate jewelry justice.
