Hello!

I am having the same issue. I just uploaded a small part of my model and it is being priced at almost $10!

I created a huge sword and the whole thing cost that!

I hollowed it our and left a hole for the powder. The walls are 1.5mm.

The whole model is 3x this and more complex, is this pricing right? Is there anyway to make it smaller?

I can see how you have tried to hollow your model. The green shells were inside the outer shell.
If the inside shells are not connected to the outside Shapeways will ignore them and treat the model as solid.
Even if the two inside shells were connected properly you are not hollowing the model to optimise it for the best savings. See image.
Some of the walls are nearly 6mm thick.
I have extracted the full outer shell as one. I will PM it to you.
Open it in Blender and try the solidify modifier. To create the wall thickness you want. You will have to create a hole / tunnel to join the inside to the outside.
Export as STL this should reduce the cost.

Your model is non-manifold, i.e. the mesh is not watertight, but this is easily found and fixed with Netfabb Basic (free).

The volume of your model is 149cm3 so the price in wsf would be approx 1.5 + 1.4*20 + 0.70*129 = 120 USD (assumes the discounted rate).

The model is big, but if you hollow it, the price will come down.
I created a model that is about 3w x 9d x 3.5h inches. I spent a good deal of time hollowing out the model, as is recommended in the tutorials section, but my prices for printing still seem to be ridiculously high. Am I doing something wrong?
Hi

Im making some stones with symbols on them. The problem is the symbols are detailed and the stones are simple. I want to embed the symbols into the stone and print them in full color sandstone.

Im using Maya 2013
What I was going to do was draw out the shapes with the polygon tool, and mold the stone around it. Some of these symbols are complex.

What I wanted to ask was, in order to submit a model for printing, do the faces on the models all need to be quaded (square with 4 verts each) or can they be triangles? I wasnt sure if it mattered or not, but it will all be a single object in the end.

It seems that you have to change some setting in Rhino to make it actually apply the texture - as AmLachDesigns
wrote, the .wrl in your zip does not mention the texture file anywhere (it should have an ImageTexture entry with
the filename). Also, the "texture file" you included in the zip appears to be in some Rhino-specific format, while it
should be a regular jpg or png image. See if you can find any option in Rhino to "map" or "bake" the texture to the
model.
(And please create a new thread when you have new questions - or are you the "njcadman" from last july ?
Reviving a year-old discussion that is only tangentially related is confusing at best, and all previous contributors to the

If your upload is successful then normally the SW image should show them. In the past there have been problems with the rotating image but the static one should be correct, i.e. no colours = has not worked.
I looked in your .wrl file and I can see no reference to the .rtex texture file. In your 3D software are you sure that you have correctly linked the Texture to the model? The problem is almost certainly in this area.

You had holes in your model and inverted normals.
It would be easier if you exported your model as an STL file. Here's a link http://sourceforge.net/projects/stl4su/
Open it in http://www.netfabb.com/basic.php which is free.
Once in Netfabb you can see the red exclamation mark, which means it needs repairing. Click on the red cross.
What you see now is holes in your model 'yellow lines' and inside out faces 'coloured red' which are inverted normals.
An Automatic repair will fix most of the issues, if not all for some models. Click Apply repair.
Goto Part - Export Part - as STL a screen will appear click on Repair then Export
This should be OK to upload as it is, even with six shells. If you still can't fix your files upload them to http://cloud.netfabb.com/ this is free as well.

I made a small model in Sketchup 8. I export it as a dae. There is only one component in the model. It is a small knob with a llama on it. The knob previews fine, but there is no llama. If I preview the dae in finder, I see the llama. If I import the dae into a new sketchup document, the llama is there. When I upload to shapeways... no llama.

I attached the preview I see in shapeways as well as the dae.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello,
I have a question:
I want to print 2 pieces that are clipped together by a grafting ( male and famale )
Considering that I use Strong and flexible white how much must be smaller the male ?
For example : if the female has an hole of 10mm ..the male must be?
And if the male is a spherical ,how must be the female?
Thanx

1 million triangles is the limit set by Shapeways for model uploads, this is incorrectly referred to as 1 million polygons on the upload/create page. (polygons can be made up of more than 1 triangle)

For a 1million triangle model, an STL binary is 47.6 MB and STL ascii is 202 MB

You can load & export either using NetFabb Basic (and it will show the triangle count too).

Another non-issue that can cause an unspecified upload fail result is the complexity of a model, for instance if a model is made up of many rings that interlock e.g. chainmaille, Shapeways MeshMedic can spend so long checking the integrity of the model that it reaches it preset time-out (20 minutes iirc). A single near 1million triangle colour model or multiple smaller colour models in one file can also cause the same time-out.
