Sorry are you sure?

I'm with Batsheba. Everybody who buys at our shops at shapeways has the right to resell it on an own platform. When he buys it officially at our shop he has purchased it legally from shapeways paying our and shapeways markups and costs.
(as long as he doesn't pretend to be the original creator or the printing manufactorer)

If he wants to reuse some of our work like photos, 3d designs or shapeways renders he has to ask and can't that do without permission of the owner.
(Interesting question: who can allow this for the 3d renders - the shop owner or shapeways?)
Am I wrong?

The short answer is that direct casting would probably not work well-enough for your application without a lot of labor to clean up the results. There are many variations of processes that can be assisted by 3D printing (or printed parts directly), but it depends on your budget, number of parts, skill set, resources, and how much labor you're willing to put in.

My first choice (for a handful of parts) would be making the parts directly, then post-machining for accuracy, which would probably be needed for tight tolerances anyway. Pure Titanium printing is available but pricey. A sparse steel frame can be competitive with aluminum for strength/weight ratio in a truss, but is not ideal for something solid like an engine block.

It is very sad that search on two terms still returns results that have only one of those terms. This has been hashed over on the BBS before...I can't emphasize enough how badly it needs to be fixed.

Also, why does search not work on designer names? If I search for "Bathsheba" -- exact match to the name of my shop -- the first result should be my shop! Instead it's a model that isn't even in my shop.

Guys, I love you, but search is not nearly as tough a nut as you're making it. Just pick the damn low-hanging fruit already!

I am curious if anyone has printed moulds for direct casting with aluminum? Shapeways advertises steel and ceramic printing. Could these materials be used to create moulds that could be used directly for casting? This would be for small engine parts for model RC airplanes. Casting these is easy, it is making the moulds that is hard and time consuming.

Having different scales listed as categories on the website would be wonderful.

I have scaled up from HO to OO. I simply used the netfab scale function- I think it was a factor of 1.14. It raised the price about 25% in FUD. I have also scaled down from HO to N, switching material from SWF to FUD, but I had to redesign my spruces attaching components together.

The problem with an automatic tool is that the design would have to meet the design guidelines in the SMALLEST scale you offer. That means wires and walls would get bigger in the bigger scales, and cost would be much higher than it should be. Remember you scale in three dimensions, so twice as big is a lot more than double the cost without redesign.

A bigger problem is all the rejections I have been getting when I sell a model that successfully test printed in the past. It makes me look like a fool and kills any customer satisfaction. No chance of repeat sales. I am thinking of dumping the whole "no supply line" philosophy and ordering models to sell direct on ebay. The Shapeways method is not working for me.
Have you seen the The Free Universal Construction Kit? It's a super-clever set of connectors that allow you to combine different types of toys. Like hook up your Lego to Fischertechnik. Needless to say, kids love it!

What's interesting to me is that the individual manufacturers would never create these connectors. But as soon as you have access to a 3D printer, it's easy to make it yourself!

Taking this one step further, I'm curious what other kinds of objects you would like to connect? The Magsafe Adapter Key Ring is one of my favorites (and its creator Jonathan Bobrow just finished a successful Kickstarter campaign with it, congrats!).
Hi:

I am an HO modeler and I browse the miniatures sections looking for useful parts for my modeling efforts periodically. I think Shapeways would be more usable and we'd all sell more of our listed models if:

1) there was a standard format that lists scale (HO, N, Z or 1/87, 1/160 etc) as a hard filter so you could see ALL the models available in your scale and none of the others. This makes searching a lot less tedious. I realize there are scales used by military modelers which are different from the RR scales, which brings me to:

2) it would nice if there was a tool that would rescale models. Obviously some designs won't scale well across 1/48 - 1/800 but within smaller ranges many will (1/72 - 1/87 for example) and even if the material choices would change in many cases I'd be willing to buy a less detailed model or use a different material (FUD v WSF).

This would give purchasers a lot more choice and open new sales opportunities for the designers and Shapeways.

thanks for listening!

Custom Ring Creator: an awesome preview of things to come

Hi guys,

Next week, we will be officially launching our new "Custom Ring Creator" app to the public and would love your feedback prior to launch!

It is available here: http://www.shapeways.com/creator/custom-ring

Built on our new API, the ring creator enables you to make a custom ring in minutes.

You can customize the pattern, size, height and even add engraving. If you are feeling particularly creative, you can also upload your own drawn pattern, and turn that into a 3D ring!

More details:
Customize existing template patterns or create your own.
Use 2D greyscale image strips to indicate ring patterns in an extremely easy to use manner.
Adjust ring measurements such as size, height, background, and thickness with easy to use sliders.
Size = Slider that uses US jewelers standard sizes in a range of 4-14.
Height = "Width" of the ring.
Background = "Thickness" of the ring band
Thickness = "Thickness" of the pattern, or how high the pattern will sit off the band
Add borders to the ring by adjusting top and bottom border sliders.
Engrave the inside of rings with a solid background width with your custom text by simply adding text to a text field and choosing the appearance.
Choose the material that fits your budget; the default is premium silver.
Check your ring for printability instantaneously through our printability visualization tool. If the whole pattern displays in green you are good to go; watch out for red areas as they may cause a ring to become unprintable.

With this app comes some exciting improvements in the background. The printability check part of the ring creator is a demo and first instance of the technology that will, in the future, bring you wall thickness visualizations and automatic printability checks for all of your models! We are reaIly excited about this, and we're sure most of you will be too.

The Custom Ring creator is also a great example of how to use the new Shapeways API. If you want to learn more, head over to the discussion in the API thread here: http://www.shapeways.com/forum/index.php?t=msg&th=14418& amp; amp; amp;start=0&

Please let us know what you think! I can't wait to see what you create!

I check in at shapeways every couple of months but just to see whether there is any profile based filtering mechanism in place yet. I am just not interested in looking at page after page of repair parts from a handful of vendors for things that are completely unknown to me. I'll spend a lot more time here and probably even spend some money if the site incorporates a personalizable filtering mechanism that allows me to filter out vendors that list things that aren't and never will be of any interest to me. There are lots of other filtering criterion that could make this place a pleasure to visit rather than pure tedium.

So please add a customizable and flexible personal filter mechanism. I'll check back in another couple of months to see if it exists yet.

How to make a chocolate swirl?

Hi guys,

I would like to make the swirls of chocolate (2D, 3 x 3 x0,2 in).

First I had printed the figure. Then I did a reverse figure from food-safe silicone. So far so good, but unfortunately this does not resolve to a piece of the silicone (figure with base) because it is very delicate, the chocolate. Another figure without base is hard to handle.

Next, I did a reverse figure-plastic print. With a smaller figure made of plastic, which is actually the goal of close, I wanted to push out the chocolate. The problem is that the plastic is too elastic and expands the interior of the figure, if I want to push it out.

What could be the solution? A figure made of metal? Good ideas?

greets, jo
