Hello, my name is Phil Nolan. I've been working in 3D as a freelancer since 2002. Along with my freelance work I also enjoy making and selling my own models on Shapeways.
I specialize in modeling and sculpting as well as texturing. I also work in animation and other areas if you have need for that.
Over 12 years working in 3D animation, including film, television, corporate videos, and of course 3D printing. I have worked with a number of people from these Shapeways forums, some are repeat customers.

|Looking for Designer to Quote Roccat Nyth Buttons [message #124779] Sat, 31 October 2015 06:34 UTC
Looking for a designer to create a button set for the Roccat Nyth or to edit the public 3d file to suit my design brief.|
I recently purchased a new gaming mouse, the Roocat Nyth.
My previous mouse was the original Razer Naga, which I used for the last 6 years or so and now has a faulty left mouse click.
I have chosen to buy the modular Nyth over getting a new model Razer due to the fact that Razer's 'upgrads' are, in my opinion, design flaws.
(keep this in mind if you compare the new design to the original)
Roccat Nyth is a brand of mouse that includes a modular design which allows for the 12 thumb buttons to be swapped out.
They have advertised that custom buttons can be obtained through shapeways and they provide 3D files for the standard buttons.
What I need designed
I need a set of 12 buttons that are more ergonomic and elegant then the default set. The Buttons should be as similar to the original Razer Naga as possible. Which is basically flat, very inline and low heights. Also need to change the numbering on the buttons but this is optional.
I would like to work closely with a designer to produce the design I have in mind.
At this stage I'm after quotes as I've never hired a designer and am unfamiliar with the costs.

|Mechanical design / Scaled Vehicles / Product Design [Solidworks] [message #124602] Mon, 26 October 2015 15:20 UTC
It's been a while since I posted here, but I have had a good experience with Shapeways community so I am offering my skills again. My field is mechanical engineering, and I have been doing freelance product design for a few years now. Products have been done for both individuals and companies, I don't mind working under NDA or giving you the copyright for the design.
Although I have done a very broad range of products, I enjoy mechanical design the most. I have designed products from rings to objects that went into the space. One thing I can't do is character design, so don't bother asking quotes for that, there are plenty of talented designers on this forums who specialize in character design. For everything else, I will be happy to talk with you about your project.
My hourly rate is $20 and I will make your product from your sketch, pictures, technical drawings ready to 3D print in the material of your choice or the one that is suitable for the project. Most projects are done with a fixed price, if project will take longer time to complete we will make a deal. Payments via Paypal. Send me a private message here or on my email, which is shown on the bottom of the post, to get a quote on your project. If you have some questions about 3D printing and designing for 3D printing without wanting me to hire, that's okay, feel free to send me an email or PM here and I will help.
I am having my portfolio website built, so I will put some of my past work below. Since I worked on many different kind of products I tried to give you a good insight of broad range of products I worked on.
Scaled Models of vehicles and trains
1/64 RSD Shell
Client sent me a 1/64 scale model of his train via post office. My job was to replicate the design, do some modifications and have it printed. It was designed for Frosted material due train being very detailed.
1/144 Mobile lounge
This was for a client I have a lengthy undergoing business relationship with. We are designing Ground support vehicles for airport in 3 scales, 1/200, 144 and 1/72. These vehicles are unique because they feature working mechanisms which mimic the ones in reality. For example, one of our latest vehicles is the beltloader which is used for loading luggage in / out of the planes. Here are pictures of beltloader showing 2 different position of the belt: driving position and loading position. Belt is locked with a pin to remain at loading position.
I have worked with an ex gymnastic world champion who got her medal doing an act using a gym wheel. She wanted to have it done in 3D and print necklaces using the design. She gave me technical drawings so I was able to make a very accurate model. It was printed in different sizes and materials like Stainless steel and silver. http://imgur.com/OzK6jgL
Rings and pendants
Here is an album which consists of rings and pendants I have done. Usually I get the sketch or a picture from a client of the main feature of the product. For example, a celtic knot for the ring. Sometimes I get request for jewelry that requires organic or surface modelling. Once again, that is not my thing. If you are not sure if I can do your model or not, send me a message.
This was done for a company that manufacturers automotive parts. They needed a clamping device to hold there items in place while a robotic hands bolts 2 parts together. One of the rare occasions I have done a project in Catia because that's what company required. The final design is under NDA, pictures shows a Catia screenshot of a prototype version. This wasn't 3D printed, but manufactured using traditional manufacturing technologies.
This was actually my first project I have done for a Shapeways member, almost 3 years ago. Although design is pretty much straightforward it has a meaning for me since it introduced me into the world of 3D printing design and was the first step on my path become a mechanical designer. Client's nozzle broke of a turning device, it was used to control oil's pressure, and company offered him a replacement one for $200. He decided to use 3D printing and he found me on Shapeways forums. I was able to get it correct on the first try, and the cost of my design work and printing price was under $100. Also done in Catia.
Hopefully this will you enough information on what I can design for you.
If interested in hiring me please send me a PM,
Looking forward to working with you!

We're a digital marketing company based in Sydney, Australia and want to create a unique 3D printed trophy to give to each staff member on completion of every one year they've been with us.|
The trophy will be made up of the following elements (Listed in the order of size of element - biggest first)
- A number between 1 and 9 (indicating the number of years someone has been with our company)
- A pixely mouse pointer arrow (e.g. http://www.dreamstime.com/royalty-free-stock-image-cursor-co lor-pixel-computer-mouse-file-contains-path-to-isolation-ima ge35315876)
- The Thinkun logo (see it at www.thinkun.net)
- A person's name (e.g. Alexander Samuelson)
- A unique 10 digit number (e.g. 1445736233)
Each year we will make several trophies - an individual one for each person in the company who finishes one more year with us and people will collect several of these over time.
High quality, multiple colour output will be great. Should be able to print in Australia ideally, or be able to ship quickly and inexpensively to Australia).
Would anyone here like to help conceptualise and create this?

Welcome to Shapeways, the connection between designers like myself, and those with creative minds such as yourself.|
I have been 3D modelling for two years now through classes in Highschool. Yes, you read that correct, Highschool. At this point, you may think that my age makes my incompetent, but I assure you that is not true. I am currently trying to fund a tour of Italy and Greece for Spring Break of 2017. and thought what better way to use my skill in 3D modelling than by selling it?
If you have any ideas for figurines, symbols, models, simple or complex, I would be more than happy to help. However, I am quite busy with schooling, drama, robotics, and other events so my available time is limited. Nevertheless, I look forward to working with you.

I wish I had a modicum of artistic talent, but alas, I cannot draw/paint/sculpt/render, to save my life.
However, I can write. I'm finally working on the first of (what I hope to be) a series of YA horror/action books. I'd really like to have a pic of the hero, for inspiration, when I write, but, again with that "can't draw", thing.
I'm painfully new to all of this, so, that said,
I'm looking for someone who can create a digital 3D picture of my character. Not looking for a sculpt/model, just yet, I'm simply wanting an image to stare at when I hit a writer's block. Nothing over the top or worthy of the Sistine....it's personal, for me. And my desk. Or wall.
Of course I'll pay, but, my budget for such a thing is nominal, but, I'll do as much as I can, for the product I'm looking for.
If interested, email me at firstname.lastname@example.org, and put Horror Hero i the subj line, so I don't scroll past you. I don't need to see anything you've already done, yet. Find out what I'm looking for, then decide if you're even interested. We can go from there.
Thanks in advance!!

Hello! I need someone who can replicate this 3D model someone made me on here. The guy on here that made the model for me decided not to finish it. So I need someone who is a loyal 3D modeler and will not screw me around. This character is called King K. Rool and is the main villain from the Donkey Kong series. As you can see the guy made cuts and simple articulation points at the head, arms, and legs. The guy was suppose to separate the cape for me and make a copy of his hands being open hands too along with a copy of his head with a open mouth but never did. He wanted $165 for this and the most I would pay is $200. I need it inner side hollow so it won't be as expensive to print and if someone could produce better articulation than this, I'll gladly pay $200 for the model. I wanted to have each piece separated because I plan to mold and cast each part. Thanks!

|model needed for button design [message #122049] Tue, 01 September 2015 12:18 UTC
I am working on a museum project which is replicating a British uniform from the American Revolution. The pewter buttons on the uniform are two sizes: 22 mm and 15 mm diameter. The button has a simple design, a raised number 45 . The number is about 1 mm thick above the button disc. The button disc is a flat piece of polished pewter, about 3 mm thick. For model purposes the button disc can be made thicker as I can file that down to my desired thickness later on.|
I am looking for quotes to make both model sizes. The models have to be made of metal or ceramic because they will be put into a vulcanized rubber mold that gets about 350 degrees and a wax or plastic material would warp and melt in the rubber mold. From that rubber mold I will be casting pewter 45th buttons from the model.
Attached is photo of an original button. Once I get an idea of what this 3D model will cost, and get the go-ahead from the museum, I can provide a cleaned up image in a SVP, JPG, TIFF, PDF format, etc.
BTW - this is my first project with 3D printing.

So, I'lL cut right to the chase, I suppose. I have had the love of my life, my gelding since he was about 6. He is a Danish warmblood and we've stuck to his gift, dressage, these last 16 years. |
Thus, as any riders might inagine, l his size might sound somewhat large, but compare to the other beasts on a normal dressage barn, he looks like like a rocking horse ;) Luckily, I'm on the short side, all legs, and stumpy on top, so we "fit".
This summer, he has been training like an 8-year-old, and the awesome girl leasing him while I heal again lol has qualified the old coot for regional already! He looks FANTASTIC, and his summer coat his lightened up, with the prettiest golden dapples coverify his haunches.
He is staying near Boston right now, and the farm grounds would better suit the three "costume changes" I would ideally want. However, he is a vain little monster, so he's spent over two decades being trailered and flown overseas and become what we call "bombproof" pretty unshakeable.
Can anybody make any suggestions at all? Quality is the most important thing, though if they can come to us, that would be a considerable help.I know this might sound ridiculous, but I'm getting married soooln, and realized the usual accouterments brides loose their minds over are worthless to me, compared to such a thing, when my possibly-psychic fiancee suggested it :)

Normally, I'm pretty busy with my main shop and products, Mini3Ddrivers. [url=http://www.shapeways.com/shops/mini3ddrivers]</a>
However, i decided to have a look at the projects that were posted in designers wanted.
I've met this really nice guy who turned out to be having some trouble with bringing a design to life. Some other designers tried to work on it earlier, but to no avail. I happen to like a challenge, and it was a really cool project, so I took on the challenge!
The idea was to make two 3d-printed mini-cities with a logo incorporated in them.
His wish was to have it printed in FCS (full color sandstone).
The general design-idea had already been worked out. It was "just" a matter of making the models.
Everyone that is making 3d-models for printing knows that the most important thing is to work out what material you want to use for your design.
In this case, there were some features that were difficult to print in FCS. Small text being the main challenge. And it's full of small text.
Instead of turning the project down, I've spend a day or two thinking of ways to make it possible. It's important to know the rules of the material.
Fortunately, I have "some" experience with the material, so I knew how to tackle the problem.
The basic design is two have 2 cities of 24'' x 24'' (or as I prefer, 60,96 cm x 60,96 cm) connected by a bridge. Each city consists of 16 tiles of 6'' x 6'' (15,24 cm x 15,24 cm) They are connected by a system of hooks, so they stay in place. There has to be some clearance, because 3d-printing is not 100% accurate. Some materials are better than others, in terms of getting a correct size.
Another catch was the deadline. I had about 8 days to complete the models. Of-course, they also had to be printed and shipped on time!
Building a city in 3d, isn't that much work on itself, but to make it printable (and as cheap as possible) requires some extra care.
If i just had made solid objects, it would have been done sooner. But also a lot more expensive! Now we've managed to keep the whole project around 3K including VAT. If it had been solid, it would easily have been over 5K!
The whole project is build using three programs. Illustrator for the graphics, and Sketchup and Blender 3d for the modelling.
Why two different 3d-programs?! Because they have their own advantages. Sketchup happens to be perfect for modelling buildings.
I've made a lot of 3d-models for Google Earth in the past. Blender is perfect for rendering, manifold checking and exporting all kinds of files.
Also, Sketchup is slightly easier and faster to use for simple UV-texturing. A big difference between the two is the way to approach a build.
Sketchup is easy to use. You can draw a square with a pen-tool. Length can be inserted while drawing the line.
Blender has more like a sculpting-approach. You start with a shape, and model it from there. Of-course, you can also draw lines and stuff, but not as easy as you can when using Sketchup. I just combined the best features that I needed! It's a workflow I have developed over the years. For me, it works fine!
The picture on top is rendered in Blender. The models are being printed as I'm typing this post. You can expect an update with pictures of the real thing in about two to three weeks! I hope there won't be any delays or problems during the printing. Those FCS-printers have a mind of their own, haha!
In the mean time, I will post some updates and pictures with some inside looks of the model!
If you have any questions or comments, feel free to respond.
If you're looking for help with a design for printing, you can always contact me!
firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com
I've just started my second shop for more general designs as well, called 3dprintsbyalex]
You can also see the parts for the cities there!
Modelling is fun and challenging! I will be hooked to 3d-printing for the rest of my life! :D

|Experienced 3D modeller needed for rush job of a structure based model [message #119903] Fri, 24 July 2015 02:45 UTC
Hi i am looking for a rush job for a design of two cities based on two logos since the artist that was working with me somehow managed to disappear with my initial payment. |
budget for 3d rendered design only 300-500usd (paying upfront is not a problem)
time frame for design: ASAP if you can finish it within today that is great 1-3 days would be acceptable.
feel free to give me a rough estimate of how much printing this would cost and how long.
i was initially quoted for every full color 6x6" city segment it would be around 65$.
these are the two companies that will need to be rendered in 3d extruded letter buildings that will follow the color of the logo underneath it. surrounded by assorted structures that will be lower than the main logo just to fill up the space.
we have a bridge connecting the two cities which will be printed separately so that it will only be put in between the two cities to show their connection to each other.
size of building:
24 x 24 inches
* problem on printing constraint
we can segment them into 6" segments forming 1 city, if you can design them to click into place that would be even better
thickness of floor / base:
up to you but maybe something between 1-3 mm?
i am open to suggestions
full color plastic.
the names of the scholars will be provided to you in excel format
you may reach me via skype or my email
let me know if you have any questions and suggestions i need this to be done asap
these items after printing would still need to be shipped to the clark international airport in the philippines.

I'm looking for someone to make a 3d replica of a farm. I have aerial and regular photographs, and could probably get some general measurements. I'd like to make a full display, so they would need to be in line with some farm 'toy' scaling. I am not looking for anything too crazy or too expensive. Please e-mail me @ cmarshall821 at gmail.com. Thanks so much!!

I am willing to dedicate as much time as needed towards your work. I will usually start start right after you send me the info. Thank you for your time and I look forward to working with you all!|
My modeling background comes from Game design in college. I hope to put it to use for more than just games though!
The file is an older model from a couple years back. I lost all of my other work when my hard drive broke.
(I once worked on this team but took a break a while back. I made some jewelry for people back then.)
