Architects by day, Shapies by night @ElisaRichardson

Shapeways has provided an alternative creative outlet for us to test ideas of how form, function and technology can exist hand-in-hand. We can sketch and 3D model for hours on end but ultimately the proof is in the print.

Australia may still be catching on in terms of 3D printing technology and it's been incredible to be able to share our designs all the way from Melbourne with people all over the world.

This series was inspired by the sense of awe that our 16 month old son displayed upon viewing some of the animal kingdom's most exquisite members during a recent visit to the zoo. Then came the idea of 3D wireframe sculptural pieces that embodied the beauty of their silhouettes. The sculptures could either sit indoors or find a home in the garden.

Shapeways has been great in making these prints possible and has also become a lively visual blog where ideas can be exchanged with other creative minds.

Please drop by and say hello at our newly launched shop @ https://www.shapeways.com/shops/xyzworkshop to complete our Shapie initiation.

One thing I love about 3D printing in the strong and flexible materials is the ability to print moving parts.
This ring demonstrates that feature in a fun way.

The Wasabi Wand! Billions of people eat sushi across the globe, this stainless steel (or material of your choice) device can make certain you have the perfect wasabi/soy sauce mixture in seconds as opposed to the lumpy, clumsy method using your chop sticks. Customizable with persons initials, makes a great gift for the sushi lover. I eventually see this as a black plastic collectable utensil similar to a Hard Rock Cafe drink stirrer. The next time you mix your wasabi with chopsticks I hope you think of the Wasabi Wand! Let me know what you think...

and for nostalgic factor here is an interview that Joris Peels did with me on my Shapeways creations back in 2009:

So I made 3 new set of earrings (http://www.shapeways.com/shops/HaMiDSani). I added multiple pictures of the final product and with some ear models to show the final product. Currently I'm just using FUD and polished white strong & flexible but I'll be looking to print in other materials too once I got a few people buying it.
I started designing the first earring (http://goo.gl/8FvlHn) as a personal birthday girl for my girl friend. I kind of had too much fun doing it so I decided to expand a little. The two new designs Drama (http://goo.gl/RT3WNX) and Snow Flakes (http://goo.gl/hzxi1g) are designed by my brother and created and refined by me. I think what makes them different is either the intricate details and the cool design (we all know that I'm biased anyways so why don't you take a look?).

So... yeah. Would love to get featured. I got more exciting ideas and I'll be adding more models in the coming months.

Thanks

Hi Natalia & Shapeways!

Thank you for the ongoing opportunities like this exciting new partnership with Neiman Marcus.

Please feature my new Infinite Love Ring.
The jewel of this ring is a heart when viewed from the front and an infinity sign when viewed from the top.

The design was inspired by a modern adaptation of the Ramayana myth which describes an ideal love. (From "After the Flood" by Randy Baker & Rorschach Theater)

The ring looks great in your new bronze and I hope you'll think so too. http://shpws.me/pCcw
Thanks again for the opportunities.

Best wishes,
Rose Thun, Design Rosetta

Hi all,

Now that the price of the Ceramics is lower than ever (thank you Shapeways), it is a good time to mention again the Whirl Cup:
https://images1.sw-cdn.net/model/picture/674x501_1221785_1230880_1377204088.jpg

and the Sphere Cup:
https://images1.sw-cdn.net/model/picture/674x501_1158390_1128140_1373488899.jpg
I have lowered my markup so that their price is now $29.90 which is quite attractive compared to their previous price.

More information on these designs (and other ones) in this thread!

I designed these shot glasses based on a 3D scan of my own hand. Inspired by my love for the expression and form of our hands, drinking from one conjures some deep thoughts: "This is the best drink I ever had, hands down," and "Tough to refuse a shot when it's handed to you!" The puns are endless fun ;D

I feel this ceramic shot glass takes advantage of a lot of what 3D printing has to offer, and I am excited to produce a series of these in different poses for any quirky party, bar, or coffee shop. It will certainly hold espresso, and it comes in four sizes (.6, 1, 1.5 and 2 ounces). The reservoir travels organically down the wrist ending behind the knuckles while the fingers remain solid for support.

I was ecstatic when I unboxed these and the fingers held up nice and strong! And everything was so shiny in gloss black! Thanks so much Shapeways for realizing my idea so flawlessly!

These shakers shown in eggshell blue can be used with salt and pepper, but why limit yourself to two spices when several colors of ceramics are available at Shapeways? Use them for MSG, parsley flakes, garlic powder or whatever spices up your life! These are prototype shakers but they shake, shake, shake very well. Slightly revised designs will be released once they are manufactured and evaluated.

The TWIST vase is inspired by flowers twisting and blowing in the wind. I think it's incredible how flowers grow on an impossibly thin stem and support a large, beautiful bloom. With TWIST, I wanted to capture that sense of impossibility and elegance. To see it standing with flowers in it is really something to behold. Dry arrangements can be done, but water makes it actually quite steady.

index.php?t=getfile&id=44103&private=0

When I got my first print of TWIST it was chipped and had a hairline crack, but the good folks @Shapeways sent me a replacement! I was pretty happy about that!

You can find more 3D printing in my shop and see what other stuff I'm up to on my website or facebook page. Thanks!

I am really excited about the drop in ceramics pricing. I made this heart-shaped dipping dish for my wife for Valentine's Day 2012, and we've been using it ever since. There has been no discoloration from the vinegar in 18 months of regular use.

People responded really well to the design, and I've sold a few of them, but I think the high price kept many people from actually buying one. It feels much better to offer it at a lower price, and I'd love to see it featured again. Even if it doesn't sell, I think it's a nice example of what can be done with ceramics.

Thank you!

Eric

Hey hey,

I would like to see my printed Coraline S. Bulky in the featured Ceramics section next week.

Inspired by Coral I model a little tealight in Lightwave. A colleague of mine ordered "Coraline S." in sandstone but it was too thin for Ceramics.
So i decide to make a more bulky version of it - "Coraline S. Bulky" was born.
I am very happy about the gloss, the quality rating and that it now could be printed much cheaper cause the pricing is now based on volume instead of surface area.

Best regards
Stephan

Hi Everyone! I am Aaron, the lead designer over at http://www.polychemy.com/.

Recently i took part in a 3D printing competition, and we were tasked to create a 3D Printed abacus.

So i came up with this crazy piece!
A 3D printed cylindrical abacus, that can do '2 calculations in one'. Also this piece can be pulled apart when the right number sequence is entered, reveling a secret compartment.

index.php?t=getfile&id=43761&private=0

I wanted to create something Ancient and Sculptural, a piece that could showcase the power and beauty of 3D printing.
This piece was printed with Alumide, which really gave it an authentic 'stony' look! Which was a really welcomed side effect Smile

I posted many more pictures and a simple 'making off', over at the 3D printing forums here:
http://www.3dprinting-forums.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=712 3

You can purchase this sculpture at my shop here:

The basic idea of this project - to create sculptural objects that accurately reflect the complex structures of nature - has evolved as one of the passions of my life.  When I was a teenager, I spent much of my time collecting insects and assembling skeletons from dead animals that I found.   For me, these pursuits were a perfect marriage of my curiosity about nature and my interest in the visual arts.  I didn't want to just collect things and put them in jars of alcohol or formaldehyde.  I wanted to find a way to display their intricate beauty.

For several decades I have used a camera and computer software programs to produce images for lectures, magazines, and textbooks.   With the advent of inexpensive 3D printing technology such as that offered here at Shapeways, I have started to apply these skills to create three dimensional objects.  The goal of my project is to create a collection of dozens of different sculptures of animal skulls -- in effect, a skeletal zoo.   Each sculpture will be based upon a CT scan taken from an actual specimen.

I am launching this as a KICKSTARTER project today. I am hoping this will be an effective way to get the word out. I have dozens of CT scans to process and hope to print hundreds of skulls. Each skull takes me days to process from the CT scan, and I really cannot justify spending all the time unless I know that someone besides me thinks this is a great project.

Please check out my Kickstarter project here.

Shown here are the 3 prototype sculptures that I have printed at Shapeways. In addition to all the common animals we know and love, I have a series of Endangered Species I am working on, and even a CT scan of my own skull. I am super excited about this project.

And as an addendum to this notice, I would like to thank everyone at Shapeways who has been processing my models. I appreciate your patience. I have repeatedly uploaded models that are too thin to print and which get rejected over and over again. It it an extremely painstaking process to go through hundreds and hundreds of CT scan slices and selectively thicken an area on the inside of a skull, or to delete paper-thin internal structures that don't need to be part of the print.

I posted this thread in the "It Arrived", but my excitement is flowing over into the "Feature This" section....

I designed this Pendent a few months ago and had it made in Frosted Ultra Detail. I wanted to get it printed in Silver and Gold Plated Brass for gifts, but I had issues balancing the cage wires with the minimum material conditions. As they got thicker, things looked weirder.

I was really stressed about buying two in premium metals, since this was my first run at printing this pendant. The two Pendants arrived today and I couldn't be more happy.

I was also concerned about enclosing a part within another, since it was going to be polished and knowing the inside would be more "raw" metal. Again, it's perfect and Shapeways did an amazing job. The Silver version was done in Premium and it's my personal favorite.

Thanks again,

Darren Hartenstine

A new ring designed for silver and brass. https://www.shapeways.com/model/1213018/laplacian-ring-sz-7. html

Organic branching forms emerge from the top of this intricate sterling silver ring. The complex structure of this ring recalls the forms of stony corals and dendritic crystals.

Please feature my jewelry hand model Smile It's made in WSF and it's a great way to display rings and necklaces.

These are randomly generated designs, created by drawing a line with right-angled turns in a periodic 2d plane, and then wrapping it around a torus. Each bracelet is a new run of the algorithm, so it's a one of a kind.

I gave a couple of them to my sister for her birthday.

They printed great. Since they're in SF, they're flexible enough to bend and fit over somebody's wrist. (All the designs are 'open' somewhere on the torus, even though it's not immediately obvious.)

Just got my Zardoz Head printed in FCS! I sculpted it in Sculptris, Zbrush and Meshmixer. I tried to be as faithful as possible to the movie prop. Great job on the printing, shapways folks!
