Hello all.

My first post here but not my first shapeways project. After doing a few stuff and testing lots of materials for prototyping, I just receive a test I've done to check the quality of the FUD and I was blowed away. This thing is just wonderfull, almost no post process as it's pretty damn accurate and super smooth.

So here's the little guy I've print, he's about 10 cm height, all the parts are separate and hollowed. The only little complain is just that there's still some support material in the smaller pieces but it's clearly a technical issue as the parts are small and I guess that the water jet was not able to clean it properly.

It's a small size version of an old Jumbo machinder from the 70's I really liked the design of this guy and I've redo it in 3D and was able to print it.

So just one thing in conclusion, please keep this FUD, it's just what a lot of people have wait for a long time.

Cheers

I ordered Salvo, Vantage & Mayhem (or rather Recoil, Headshot & Fracas!) and they arrived earlier this week. VERY happy with them! They're so cool!!

They took paint very well and look amazing. I washed them before painting them with Games Workshop paints.

The only one I have slight issues with is Salvo. He doesn't hold together too well and I had a hell of a time putting his neck/joint in place. Everything on him pops off too easily, too. Having said that, he looks great with Perceptor!

I highly recommend these figures and will definitely be getting more.

The lion rampant was scanned into Wings3d from royalty-free clipart. The shield design was compiled using OpenSCAD and my own heraldic library of OpenSCAD scripts.

I'm really, really pleased with the way this has turned out and will be using it as the basis for a 'print your own heraldic design' co-creator template.

Hi Shapeways fans,

Squashed Cube looks like a Rubik's Cube after being squeezed together in a vice. The six faces turn sort-of-like a Rubik's Cube, but in a very bandaged - jumbling - way. The middle slices are at an angle of 60 degrees from each other. This way, the hexagons in the center of each face can change position and orientation. This makes this puzzle very hard to solve.

Watch the YouTube video.
Buy the puzzle at my Shapeways Shop.

This will be a birthday gift for a good friend of mine - I hope she like it Smile I'll probably paint it white, so it keeps the color and add lacquer to make it a little bit shiny.
It's printed in white strong and flexible - not polished, because I ordered it a few days before polished was anounced.

Find it on Shapeways here:

When I saw Shapeways was offering a new FUD material I rushed in a few designs for printing.

This is a Warrtrakk upgrade and conversion kit. It was originally a body+turret but I broke the design down into a kit for FUD. The material is very clear+translucent the colors are off in the photos due to contrast and exposure adjustment.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_WGFXUg9zkL4/TdJahby914I/AAAAAAAAok0/oqZNE2sDHMk/s640/DSC01454.JPG

Fan detail is much sharper than WD, this one piece out of the lot has a really odd wax half melted appearance. Some of the corners are not 100% square they have the very tip clipped clean, not really a problem for me but it's there at the very extreme tips of most pieces.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_WGFXUg9zkL4/TdJacc7_6VI/AAAAAAAAoks/lgmf-4mp45Q/s640/DSC01455.JPG

Unfortunately there was some major warping on the main body panels. these are 1mm with .5mm indents. I took this photo AFTER I straightened them under hot water. Instead of a 90 angle it was closer to 145 when I opened the box. (Printed as 1 piece this would have supported itself)
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_WGFXUg9zkL4/TdJYitqMVlI/AAAAAAAAokQ/-dYDO2VPgFs/s640/DSC01453.JPG

Assembled.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_WGFXUg9zkL4/TdJb29LNFTI/AAAAAAAAol4/o4I60OiVHCg/s640/DSC01467.JPG

Mocked up with the original warrtrakk fender and track.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_WGFXUg9zkL4/TdJacJmG2nI/AAAAAAAAokY/3ag-F1tmx3c/s640/DSC01472.JPG

This is a model that I had previously tried to print in WD, when it printed in that material it was a large blob of fused support material and model. The scale was just too small to print in WD. So when FUD was released I tried another print. Over all really impressed with the level of detail the material prints in and the smoothness of the surface finish. Not impressed with the brittle quality of thin printed planes.

The torso is hollow and contains some very thin planes. It looks to have either disintegrated in shipping or perhaps meshmedic "fixed" it as the upper torso should be hollow but is solid.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/_WGFXUg9zkL4/TdJbT88O1yI/AAAAAAAAolk/d-VgbAyMjPo/s640/DSC01460.JPG

I'm not sure what happened here, one leg is fine and the other is a mess.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/_WGFXUg9zkL4/TdJbQ9WKzYI/AAAAAAAAolE/07lEXge1GeY/s640/DSC01461.JPG

One for comparison with WD the saw tooth blades are much sharper on FUD and the finish is basically smooth.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/_WGFXUg9zkL4/TdJbSGGleOI/AAAAAAAAolU/iYtkhcaRCeo/s640/DSC01465.JPG

I like FUD I'll certainly order it again but I'll probably print most kits using a mix of materials so the body parts are strong+cheaper and the detail parts are detailed.

My first FUD prints arrived today and I was very well pleased. They are 'cast iron' oven frames (for coke ovens) and some bridge shoes.

Hello Shapies,

I haven't posted much on this forum, but as this puzzle turned out so well, I decided I might as well show it here too. So without further ado, here is my newest puzzle:

The Twisted Starminx

Check out the Youtube Video!

More information and pictures can be found on the Twisty Puzzles Forum. I haven't yet figured out how to post the pictures here without them filling the whole page, so go check them out there.

This puzzle will be sold on eBay sometime in the next week or two. I will not be offering it for sale in my Shapeways Shop, but I do have 3 other puzzles for sale there.

Enjoy!

I printed another puzzle created by Frank Worrell, called Baseball Strike 2 http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~uy7t-isn/Puzzle/555/Baseball/Str ike2/

I have no words to describe how good this puzzle is. It looks great in its assembled state, it is challenging, and the disassembly sequence is varied and entertaining.

Assembled, this is how it looks. It is beautifully symmetrical; it somewhat resembles a baseball, hence the name.

index.php?t=getfile&id=8745&private=0

It takes 19 moves to take out the first piece. Sometime during the disassembly, none of the pieces is in its starting position. I like that Smile

index.php?t=getfile&id=8746&private=0

Here are the six flat pieces plus the frame that encloses them.

index.php?t=getfile&id=8747&private=0

The puzzle can also be assembled without the frame. It still holds together, but it takes only 8 moves to take out the first piece, so it's considerably easier. You could call that "Strike 1", I guess, though I don't know if this is the reason why the puzzle is called Strike 2. When starting from the disassembled puzzle, one could attempt to reach this position before tackling the full puzzle.

index.php?t=getfile&id=9107&private=0Mom loves it and brother kept it without getting upset. I have one gold plated glossy, one stainless and I have three more on the way ; gold plated matte, one in WSF without the inner spindles part to put my brother's picture in, and one in foggy glass. I'll show some pictures later after the next get here. Smile these should arrive Sometime in the next 12 days.

This is made to look like a classic sailors wheel with handles that at full size would be easily handled and are meant to help your hands grip and keep firm a captain's, first mate's, or other crew/ sailor's course and heading from veering. (provided a willing soul mans the helm)

Ofcoarse this is a jewelry, pendant, or decoration sized piece. miniature.

Thanks. Pictures to come soon. Thanks a lot!

Got a few more of my custom pet tags in this week. Very happy overall with how they turned out.

I got the first one in a few weeks back index.php?t=getfile&id=8689&private=0 I've made the eyelet a bit smaller one the new designs but I was very happy with the results, especially with the text on back index.php?t=getfile&id=8692&private=0

Got two oval versions in this week.

index.php?t=getfile&id=8690&private=0

I did a quick "dremel" polish to this one. Don't know why the "dot" over the eye didn't print correctly.

index.php?t=getfile&id=8691&private=0

And a quick polish to the reverse side. The text is very legible at this size, but I increaded the size of the font in my co-creator to make sure it prints even clearer.
index.php?t=getfile&id=8693&private=0

These tags look even better in person. As I'm sure you can tell from the photos I've got a real old digital camera that doesn't do too well this close up. I've got several other designs in my shop as well http://www.shapeways.com/shops/bluelinegecko?section=Pet+Tag s

All these designs can double as pendants and come with the free rubber necklace.

I have an HD black box camera for my car. The post connecting the camera body to the mount was always a bit janky and wobbled side to side. I of course kept trying to tighten it until I sheared the two dinky feet off the post bottom.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_WGFXUg9zkL4/TbrH8laet4I/AAAAAAAAois/q9aiNPNlSXk/s640/04-29-2011%209.12.13.jpg

Printed a new one in WSF just needs to be shot with black satin spray paint. I increased the ball diameter by 1.5mm and the post was both toughened up and added surface area in case I wanted to glue it. The tolerances were tight enough it snapped into place with no need for glue!

Keeping up with Apple, not an easy job Smile

PadFoot has been completely redesigned to fit the iPad 2. It's been a lot of test models in the making, but it's working really well now.

Actually, having to redesign PadFoot for iPad 2 allowed me to put into place a few ideas I'd been toying with, and I think it's really improved on the original product.
The inclination angle has increased a bit, making your iPad easier to view and interact with; and by modifying the shape to sort of a wedge - a 'logical' shape for the function it performs - the material volume has decreased, allowing me to lower the price. A white version is now $20, a black one $25 - conveniently priced at the minimum order amount.

My first 3D printed model, "Letterhead" is a sculpture I designed in Wings3d (with a little tweaking in Meshlab), inspired by many games of Lexulous on Facebook with my brother.

I have made a few small changes to the model since printing it, making the neck area less bulky and beefing up the upper arm a little.

It lives in my new shop: here. I printed it in Strong White and Flexible - the details on the brain are very fine so a small wall thickness is advisable.

Hi,

I received time ago two space filling polyhedra, but before showing them, I needed to make some drawings to explain the concept.
So here is the explanation.
You can transform a cube into a dodecahedron by drawing on each squared face a new edge and then pushing it outside the cube.
There is an analogy with a square that you can transform into an octagon by drawing new vertices at mid-edge and then pushing them outside.
Squares can fill the plane and if you tranform one square out of two (checkerboard pattern) you obtain a tiling of the plane made of octagons and another pointy shape (let's call it an anti-octagon).
index.php?t=getfile&id=8413&private=0
In the same way, cubes can fill space and applying the cube-to-dodecahedron transformation to one cube out of two you got a couple of space-filling polyhedra: the dodecahedron, of course, and a pointy shape that we can call an anti-dodecahedron.
Let's stop the explanations one second and see the results.
The dodecahedron:
../modules/udesign/utils/openfile.php?id=223206&f=photos/photo36352.jpg
The anti-dodecahedron:
../modules/udesign/utils/openfile.php?id=223206&f=photos/photo36353.jpg

Now, if you consider that you are filling the space only with dodecahedra (the anti-dodecahedra being replaced by void), you will find that dodecahedra can fill space with a ratio of 90.43% (for reference, this ratio is 74.05% for spheres). Not bad isn't it?
Very Happy

Here's another model I just received generated with a single mathematical expression using the implicit surfaces filter in MeshLab.

The wall thickness on this model is .75mm, but it looks and feels like it's paper-thin. It's 8 cm (3.1 inches).

The model page can be viewed here: Implicit Surface Q at Vertigo Polka.

Hi Shapeways fans,

Bramboules is an invention by Bram Cohen, inspired by the Cmetric puzzle. A gearing system enforces that all balls have to be turned in some direction simultaneously. This makes the puzzle quite confusing. Instead of the conventional way of solving a twisty puzzle part by part, this puzzle requires a holistic approach.

Star Spray , silver pendant arrived - This is in 'silver' not 'silver glossy' . I think I will choose silver glossy in future because the finish on this is very rough (visible sprues etc.)

Hi Shapeways fans,

Futtminx is a tribute to the brilliant Tuttminx design by Lee Tutt, which has been mass produced by Leslie Lee / VeryPuzzle. The hexagonal faces of the original Tuttminx can only be turned by multiples of 120 degrees. If one tries to makes 60-degrees turns with the Tuttminx, then adjacent turns are blocked. It is not possible to fully unbandage Tuttminx into a doctrinaire puzzle, as Tuttminx is arguably a puzzle that jumbles.

"Futtminx" stands for "Fudged Tuttminx". The corners are fudged into threefold symmetry, where all edges are fudged and made identical. The puzzle has a lot of gaps between the pieces as a result of the fudging. Also, the pieces shift a bit during a turn to make all turns possible, including 60-degrees hexagon turns.

One innovation of this puzzle is that 31 of the centers are bolted from the inside out. This saves a lot of work for placing caps on the centers and it looks better. The 32nd center has a long bolt that bolts the two core hemispheres together.

This is my first topic here at Shapeways, though I have been a devoted customer for some time here.

I have other puzzles in my shop, but this one is so beautiful and turned out so well I decided it was time to finally post one of my own products. The stickers were of course obtained elsewhere than Shapeways.

It is available for sale in my shop, but because of the triangle limit it must be purchased in three separate files.

You can read more about it and see some more pictures at
Twistypuzzles forum,

Watch a video.

and

Look at the pictures Smile

They are not embedded into the message because they are quite large and I am not very computer literate. Smile

My first prints arrived! I ordered a few stainless and a few plastic pieces - surprisingly the Stainless Steel parts arrived first.

They are:

"My Favorite Lady" by Baltimore - http://shpws.me/m0p
I was going to polish this up but the finish as it was delivered looks great and really suits our favorite lady.

And a dutch handcuff key (Story here: http://blackbag.nl/?p=940 and file here: http://shpws.me/hnl
I have not tested the actual functionality of this key... I'm a long ways away from Amsterdam and avoid trouble as best as I can, but liked the ingenuity that went into the making of this file, and it makes for a nice decoration on my keychain.

I'm still figuring everything out here, but so far I'm very, VERY pleased with Shapeways. The model came out exactly as I was hoping.

I gave this to my girlfriend for Valentine's day (I gave her a better present on her birthday two days before Smile ).
The turned layer prevents identical pieces, which helps makes solving easier that if both layers were at the same angle.
The darker 'Winter Red' looks very nice.

The angle at which the layers are turned is customizable. Buy your own here!

Ankh pendant in stainless steel arrived recently. Small details turned out quite well, I think. The Eye of Horus at the bottom is supposed to have a separation between the eye and eyebrow which is just barely visible here but I expected that since the gap was really narrow.

Some time ago I printed a puzzle designed by Frank Worrel, "Cubed" ( http://www.shapeways.com/forum/index.php?t=msg&th=4691&a mp;start=0&), this time I printed its bigger brother, called "Cubed 8" (http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~uy7t-isn/Puzzle/666/Cubed8/).

Cubed consists of 6 pieces that form a 5x5x5 cube. Cubed 8 has 8 pieces to form a 6x6x6 cube.

The assembled puzzle has a side of 3.6cm. The pieces don't align very precisely on the exterior, so it doesn't look as elegant as it could.

index.php?t=getfile&id=7810&private=0

The difficulty is much higher than Cubed. It takes a total of 35 moves to take out the first piece, and an amazing 21 moves just to get here:

index.php?t=getfile&id=7811&private=0

The puzzle works fine; it was a bit tight initially, but the excess material came out after rubbing the pieces against each other a few times.
I made the pieces hollow to save on material, using 0.7mm walls, but I think that this way the pieces are a bit too flexible which gives the puzzle sort of a rubbery feel. Here are all the pieces after disassembly:

Hi Shapeways fans,

Polo Gears is a puzzle invented by Alex Polonsky. After seeing his prototype, I asked whether I could build my own prototype. This puzzle is turned by turning knobs at opposite sides. Because of Alex' special gearing mechanism, the other knobs turn in opposite directions.

These are a couple of stainless steel rings I got a few weeks ago. I sanded and polished them with a dremel. I ordered these before the new stainless steel design rules went into effect, now I'm not sure if they would be willing to print the trapezoid ring with such small details.

(Images at end of post.)

I ordered nullnetworks' Skull Ring in WSF for my son (6½ years). I do wish I had something that cool when I was his age! Smile As a physician I have high standards when it comes to body part replicas, and this did not disappoint me. I do not think I could have done it better myself. Price was good too.

Since I have been experimenting with designs of spinning tops, my son is beginning to worship "Beyblade" and I personally find tops cool, I decided to order the Inception movie top replica designed by Roessnakhan, this one in Alumide. Very nice top, spins well and looks good.

I downloaded the 500k faces model Omotondo from Aim@Shape, had to reduce it to 475k faces for Shapeways to accept it, and scaled this scanned wooden sculpture to a much too small size (16 mm) before ordering it in Alumide. It looks nice but the details and the overall impression of the sculpture is lost when it is this small.

I also ordered my own design Second Harmony of the Spheres which turned out to be a less than perfect design. The walls are too thin, it is not stable enough, and I will want more weight in the periphery to make it spin better. Holding it in my hand I also realize it could be smaller and still impressive.

Other dice arrived.
In Indigo Strong and Flexible.
These ones are regular D6, but the reading of the numbers is quite unusual. You have to count the tiles to figure out what the number is.
There are two variations.
The D6 - Solid Tiles, that looks like a wall of bricks
index.php?t=getfile&id=7708&private=0

The D6 - Framed Tiles, that rather looks loke bars of cage.
index.php?t=getfile&id=7709&private=0
Here you can consider you count the holes on the upper side.

There are very big for dice (3x3x3 cm). Perhaps i should do smaller versions (2x2x2 cm). Let me know if you would like to see such smaller versions.

Hi Shapeways fans,

Hinged Gift Cube is a variation to the original Gift Cube theme. Will Pulford suggested to add hinges. As the hinges keep cube pairs together, the puzzle is solved like a bandaged Rubik's Cube. This makes the puzzle harder to solve than a regular Rubik's Cube. Once solved, the puzzle can be hinged open. The lid of the puzzle stays with the bottom thanks to the hinges.
