Hey Everyone,

The Car Antenna Snitch has taken flight.

After a few weeks my antenna snitch prototype is still hanging in strong and working perfectly. It has endured hot weather, windy weather, hard rain and has performed through it all.

In the video link below you will see the snitch start to rise up the antenna at about 35 MPH and then shoot to the top at about 50-55 MPH where it hangs on.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-w4dVxgjFdw

Thanks to my daughter for sitting in the back seat of my tiny car to film this.

Hi Shapeways fans,

Irreversible Cube is based on an idea by Christoph Lohe:
"It is just a 2x2x2 Cube, however, with the following constrains:
- only clockwise quarter turns are allowed
- after a turn on one axis (out of three), the next move, if any, will need to be done on another axis
Obviously, it is not a normal twisty puzzle as you cannot simply reverse your move sequence. It also means: the puzzle is already scrambled after a first single move from the solved state."

So if we encode
"U" = upper face 90 degrees clockwise
"F" = front face 90 degrees clockwise
"L" = left face 90 degrees clockwise
then one could legally turn e.g. "UFLUFLULUFLUFLUL" as all turns are clockwise and there are no two-same-turns-in-a-row. However, "FF" would be illegal and the second "F" move should be blocked.

Irreversible Cube exactly achieves Chris Lohe's goal. There are only single clockwise quarter turns, and any second quarter turn is blocked, only to be unlocked when another face is turned 90-degrees clockwise.

Note that the puzzle has no easy undos. Once a quarter turn clockwise has been made, one cannot undo it by turning anti-clockwise. Anti-clockwise turns are blocked by the mechanism.

Analysing the mechanism, the follow steps happen when turning a face clockwise.
1) First the turning face locks itself against turning back to it original position. From this point, one can only move forward.
2) Next the turning face unlocks the previously locked adjacent face.
3) Then, the turning face locks itself against turning back to the adjacent-faces-unlocking state.
4) Finally, the turning face blocks. Now it can only be unlocked by turning an adjacent face.

The ring:
http://ale.chenonetta.com/stuff/3D/solved_thumb.jpg
With gold rub'n'buff applied:
http://ale.chenonetta.com/stuff/3D/rubnbuff.jpg

Some back-story:
My ongoing fascination with Celtic knots has often made me think about the physical realities of knot patterns. I've previously explored making knots out of clay, and tying Chinese knots to explore this idea.

When I was little, my big sister brought home some Turkish puzzle rings. They were pretty and confounding. I never really got the hang of how to solve them! But when I found Shapeways, I knew i wanted to have a go at making my own puzzle rings.

My first attempt at the idea was a perfect intertwining of over-and-under loops.
http://ale.chenonetta.com/stuff/3D/firstattempt.jpg

My rusty 3D modeling skills meant that progress was slow... so it came with a slow and crushing realisation that this design wouldn't come apart and function as a puzzle ring in the way I'd imagined.

The next step was to do some research into how puzzle rings are constructed and how they're solved. I learned that unlike Celtic knots, puzzle rings don't follow a convention in the way that the loops alternate over- and under-lapping. One loop may go over two other loops before passing under the next.

Armed with this knowledge, I modeled the next version of the puzzle ring.
http://ale.chenonetta.com/stuff/3D/fakeoverlaps.jpg

And then came the problem of unraveling these interlocked pieces to ensure that they would print properly. I tried very hard to follow how the loops would remain loooped through each other when jiggled loose. Here's what I submitted to Shapeways for printing:
http://ale.chenonetta.com/stuff/3D/forprint.jpg

A few weeks later, they arrived! I got the scissors and glue out, expecting that I'd be too incompetent to solve the rings the normal way. I also suspected that I'd gotten the loops wrong (I had). As it turns out, once the loops are correctly hooked through one another, it's not too hard to solve the ring. The white S&F was a little bit too flimsy, but the black worked quite well, and I'm hoping to do some metal prints next.
http://ale.chenonetta.com/stuff/3D/fixing.jpg

Thanks for reading about my little project! I'm working on some other Celtic-knot inspired jewellery as well (including less confusing rings), so I hope to be able to share those with you soon.

Hi Shapeways fans,

Deeper Madness is a deeper-cut version of More Madness. It has a "deeper-than-deep-origin" mechanism, like Dave Pitcher's award-winning Rotoprism 2. Deeper Madness is a face-turning puzzle with six screws under the six turning faces. Starting from a screw, the associated visible cut at the surface is more than 90 degrees away.

Deeper Madness also answers Dave Pitcher's question whether a puzzle with a deeper-than-origin-cut mechanism can be solid. This puzzle shows that it can. Notice that there is still a controversy about what constitutes a deeper-than-origin-cut mechanism.

Hi everybody !

I received my model of the iconic skateboard from the 70´s (Penny or plastic Board) a couple of weeks ago.
I am using it as keyring and it looks great. The details are really good for a 6,5 cm model.
Next step is silver Surprised

Thanks Shapeways !

Got my pendants today - these are a result if me experimenting with 2D design. The 'rope' motif is simply some beziers rendered via Shapeways image popper; the rectangular motif an abstraction inspired by my iPad...

I received two of my rings last week and received the third. All are made from glossy silver and each are from a different designer.

This one on the left is from Phayart, the middle is from Missing Sock Design, and the one on the right is from Crazy Random Crapinstance.

This is another iPad3 Front Facing Speaker design. This one was created to resemble a Grand Piano.

Again, this simply slips on the side of the iPad3 to project the sound forward. (Check out the video below to hear how it works)

Even guitars need to dress up from time to time.

Customize your guitar with this bow tie add on. Just snap it in place and rock out in style.

Want to show your love of baseball while playing your guitar? Customize your guitar with this volume/tone knob that looks like a baseball.

I added small knobs on the edges to help with spinning the knob and it worked perfect. (Knobs shown on my 1982 custom, Lotus guitar)

Just pop off your old knobs and add a baseball look to your guitar. (More designs to come)

Hi Twisty Puzzles fans,

Total Eclipse is a spherical cage with two rings inside. The object is to get the two rings out. That is difficult, as each of the rings is solving a maze.

The name of the puzzle refers to the total eclipse of the sun in 1999, which was visible in Europe. The puzzle was developed earlier that year.

Wanna play disc golf but your stuck in a cubicle all day? Check out this mini disc golf basket for use in a cubicle.

I designed this Disc Golf Basket to attach to the walls of a office cubicle. I first created this just as a fun design for my love of disc golf but later decided to make it useful. There are hooks at the top to hold paper clips which also makes it look like the chains on a disc golf basket.

I also created a small disc golf disc if you want to try your hand at a game of mini disc golf.

Gibson Les Paul lovers show off your pride with this guitar ring.

I designed this ring to look like the head and neck of a Gibson Les Paul guitar. This is one of my favorite ring designs and I plan on creating a ring style for each guitar manufacturer.

I personalized this one for myself to see how it looked and I'm impressed.

I just got these yesterday... I made a leaf skeleton (well, skull) in Maya.

Simple but efficient technique:

1) Make CV curves point by point for each vein from the top view (you'll have a LOT of curves, separate them in groups by "vein width" according to your reference.
2) Select all curves that should be of the same thickness
3) Use Paint Effects>Curve Utilities>Attach Brush to Curve
4) Modify>Convert>Paint Effects to Polygons
5) Mesh>Fill Hole

And there you have it! All your curves are now solid polygon pipes. To change the paint effects brush size and subdivisions, use Paint Effects>Template Brush Settings

I'll use this technique more now for complex filigree-type designs, it's very easy to make curves and them make them all polygons at once.

Hello ShapeWays World.

I just thought I would share the newest creation to The Verse shop, here on ShapeWays. Since no one @The Verse is a 3D modeler, We had to hire out for modelers over the last few yrs. Some are way good. And then you find one that can take a few pictures and turn them into the most fantasic thing ever to hold.

We hired such a 3D Modeler, Please if you will, meet @AndreiBuletin, Andrei took our pictures and created our newest model for The Verse. From the TV show of the 1970s, he created for us the Space 1999 ship SWIFT. I tried painting up a pair, But I ain't too good at it. PLUS It's super tiny, 28.7mm long. THAT'S IT!! I SWEAR!!

Well today our first test prints arrived from ShapeWays. And I am telling you they are fantastic. So much so, I thought I would put them out there for ALL to see. If you like what you see. Come check out the other creations in our shop. Including the Space 1999 Eagles. All 4 different designs. IN 1/1000 SCALE!!

Thank You ShapeWays for the skills and machines you used to help my dream come true. CAUSE I'M HOLDING IT RIGHT NOW!! LOL

The Verse team; Samantha, Lynne & Marcie

Ordered on the 10th and arrived the 25th, spectacularly quick work there! Delivery was also a lot quicker than I expected, sent on Friday and arrived on Monday (I'm in the UK).

I'm very happy with how these have turned out.

Thanks!

Hallo,

for a gift, I build a diorama from Minifigs the first dive with my girlfriend, I need splitfins for my minifigs. Because we both use splitfins: I use Blue and my girlfriend Frosted, so I printed it in Blue S&F and in FUD

I build 2 Versions, 1 Realistic with angle an an without angle to allow the minifigs to stand.

I needed a weekly pillbox, but all the models I found were very big. I decided to try to model my own one, to put into a metal box.

I already built a 3D cardioid a while ago, which was used for the cover of last Marillion's album.
Here are two new versions. I am waiting for the Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd to call me...index.php?t=getfile&id=29464&private=0

I received these prints the other day from Shapeways. It took some trial and error to get the sizes just right due to the shrinkage and other factors in the manufacturing process. I really appreciate Shapeways customer service working with me on getting these printed as there are a few critical areas that are below the general minimum wall thickness and detail level for stainless. I love the way these turned out. Especially in the bronze finish.

index.php?t=getfile&id=29088&private=0
index.php?t=getfile&id=29089&private=0

I've had a few other designs made through the last few years as well:
index.php?t=getfile&id=29090&private=0
index.php?t=getfile&id=29091&private=0
index.php?t=getfile&id=29092&private=0

Note: While I did research and haven't found any law in the US restricting the buying/manufacturing of handcuffs/keys, (only laws against where some can be taken and how they are carried) to avoid any potential concern about potential misuse I am currently only selling these to verified Law Enforcement / Security personnel. I am also only offering them in the stainless steel -based materials and not any of the materials that could be used to circumvent a metal detector.

Hi Shapeways fans,

Double Dino was suggested by Joan Fons. It combines the operation of two half Dino Cubes at both ends, and a 1x3x3 Floppy Cube mechanism in the middle.

I created this for a co-worker of mine, who wanted a super-villain version of himself (hence, no hair). We had a fair amount of correspondence while I designed. He was particularly excited the day I showed him the render with electricity arcing down the sword. The print turned out well (a tad over 2.4 inches tall). I am sorry that I forgot to give the coat a bit more wrinkles and definition, though.

"Why could they not see that this was the only way? They had brought this on themselves. He averted his gaze as the harsh glow and grim hum swelled in the place that would have been his hand. A moment later, the kickback shoved him backwards in the dirt, knocking a few tears off his glistening cheeks."

Hi!

Finally got to upload some pictures of "V-Mark" - a bookmark with Voronoi texture:
- Voronoi structure
- Free floating ball in top structure
- Very flexible and robust
- Thin base to fit in any book
- Nice grip top

What do you think?
Cheers!

Hi Shapeways fans,

Switched Maze is a mechanical maze. The object is to roll the metal ball from "Start" to "Goal". The ball is impeded by gates at several points in the maze. By rolling the ball against the levers, gates can be opened and closed.

This maze is related to Robert Abbott's Sliding Door Maze and Eldon Vaughn's Amaze. The rules of Abbott's puzzle is electronically enforced by the software implementation. The rules of Vaughn's maze is psychologically enforced by the game rule that says not to lift the stylus from the board. The switched Maze is fully mechanically enforced. That is, you cannot cheat without taking the puzzle apart or removing the transparent cover.

Switched Maze implements logical one-way gates, logical crossings and a Chinese-Rings type of passing point. Most likely, one could build a Turing Machine using the Switched Maze concept.

Got these in today with part of my order. I was in need of a simple expansion slot block off plate for quite some time. Sure I could have bought a metal one pretty cheap, but I figured why not take some quick measurements, add this to an order, and have some printed.

It is such a simple design that I set the model to allow free downloads and the file is available through my shop "commission free" so the price you see is what Shapeways charges to print. Don't know if this will help anyone else out or not.

http://www.shapeways.com/model/932584/computer-expansion-slo t-cover-plates.html?li=productBox-search

Feel free to modify/personalize it to your hearts content. Due to the handling fee for printing I included 4 plates in this design to reduce the cost per plate. You can increase the number of plates if you want to further reduce the price for each one. (the volume for each of the plates is 2 cm3)

I ordered mine in alumide to give it a more metal look. I figured the aluminum material may also help slightly with any electromagnetic interference issues.

When you find that special person, you want to be together forever. How better to symbolize that than a cute little 2 headed sea turtle. These guys are literally together forever, and as cute as your love.

Hi Shapeways fans,

Gear and Slide combines gearing and sliding in a single twisty puzzle. Such a combination was suggested by Khaled Habbab. After rejecting a whole bunch of puzzle concepts that are either unstable or no fun to play, this one was selected. The puzzle combines 23 sliding pieces and a void with eight turning corners. All corners turn in the same direction, reusing the gear designs from Polo Gear Cube for the internal gearing mechanism.
