Hi Shapeways fans,

Smiley Cube is a Rubik's Cube with holes, similar to Void Cube. It is a bandaged puzzle, as the two big holes each combine an edge and two corners. The name of the puzzle comes from the mouth-shaped holes. The idea for this puzzle came up in a discussion with CrazyBadCuber Dan Fast, see also this video.

Watch the YouTube video.
Buy the puzzle at my Shapeways Shop.
Read more at the Twisty Puzzles Forum.
Check out the photos below.

Enjoy!

When I printed my labyrinth coin in polished grey steel, I was interested by the effect of the matt black finish remaining in the crevices. It occurred to me that this contrast could be used to good effect in a picture. Having been very satisfied with how the pig coin came out, I decided to combine the two.
So what animal has a recognisable head and tail - and also dark and light patterning? A panda, obviously.

So I designed and printed it, and disappointingly, the dark areas were nowhere near as dark as they'd been elsewhere. The issue is that the areas were so wide that the polishing media can get in and scour it off.
After mulling this over for a while (and incidentally, making a plain stainless print and painting it myself for a gift), I decided to try to protect the dark areas by adding patterning. For the face side I added a bit more detail - rings around the eyes, curves inside the ears - to get the ~1 mm wide, 1 mm deep channels I'd had in the labyrinth coin. I also enlarged some of the thinner lines slightly.
For the rear I had a bit more of a problem, because the back legs were rather large plain areas without any obvious scope for protection. In the end I went for a half-toning effect using 1 mm pillars.

This seems to have worked quite well, as you can see:
index.php?t=getfile&id=111054&private=0

Here is a comparison of the rear sides:
index.php?t=getfile&id=111055&private=0

On-screen the difference in colour-depth doesn't look like much, but it's much more obvious in the hand.
I put the finished panda coin in my shapeways shop. I've also put up the plain (unpatterned/unprotected) version, but really it's so much easier not to have to paint it.

I modeled up a trio of wee pixelated Tardises.

index.php?t=getfile&id=109594&private=0

Being a fan of the Baker era shows, I did a lighter blue one first:
index.php?t=getfile&id=109597&private=0

Then, I did a more modern era one, in a slightly darker blue:
index.php?t=getfile&id=109595&private=0

And then one in that same blue, with the round door logo added:

May be out of date already.

Oh well. It was fun to make, and I felt I had to make something to celebrate. Maybe others will feel like wearing it in the same celebratory spirit.

The pics are of the metallic plastic ($4.99), but this should look great in the 18 kt gold or rhodium plated ($59.99).

First in polished bronze steel my Star of the Arcane Order Ring. The layered geometric design worked as I hoped with bright edges and less-polished sections between.

The other ring that arrived was my Orb Wings Ring in Polished Gold Steel, I was quite taken with how pretty it was and how the wing texture turned out! Pretty, but difficult to photograph how the wings wrap around and hug the finger.

Hi Non-Twisty Puzzles fans,

Penta is based on an idea by David Tzur (previously known as Alex Polonsky). The object is to place the 12 pentominoes in the rectangle. However, the bumps limit the way how this can be done. This turns the puzzle into an interesting pentomino challenge.

Watch the YouTube video.

I ordered some of my own guns recently, mostly in full color plastic. Here's the Imgur album: http://imgur.com/a/hwxW0#0

The guns themselves were printed with great accuracy. The materials themselves, however, do not get the same amount of praise. As I have come to learn, FCP is far from a good material for LEGO-scale items. As you saw, the SKS was bent, the grips were too small to be held by minifig even with a layer of clear nail polish applied, and the colors weren't all that spectacular either. But keep in mind, I have a feeling LEGO scale models were not what this material was designed for, and this is clearly evident. Polished metallic plastic was fairly detailed, having printed on the holes in the grip of the butterfly knife. But unfortunately, the polishing process removes a few millimeters off of the grip, which not even a layer of clear nail polish could fix. This made me realize that I should probably stick with unpolished materials next time. Black S&F was probably the highlight of this order, as both of the pistols in there are (almost) completely accurate. The grips are only a tad bit smaller than what they should be, but that's only a minor issue, and only one side of the pistols was printed with proper detail, but this isn't too much of a problem since that was just the side it was printed on. Other than that they were both spot on, and what I consider to be a great success.

Overall, full color plastic and polished metallic plastic aren't very good materials for LEGO scale things, but that's probably because that isn't what they were meant for. As for solid color plastics, stick with rough materials if you prefer usefulness over smoothness.

I will definitely be ordering more of my guns in different colors, and perhaps in the future a few more material types, and I will certainly be reviewing them for any LEGO fans out there.

Yesterday I got a approx. 20 cm high print in WSF of a Martian Tripod from the Jeff Wayne musical version of "War of the worlds". Very nice one, although the legs might need some reinforcements in the future - they were a little bend in the package. It is now standing on my shelve waitung for further treatment, and the legs are almost straight after a couple of hours out of the shipping box. Maybe the will become completely straight in the next days - time will tell.

I recently got a print in of a mask, but after doing some cleanup work, I noticed a couple of hard edges on my model were rounded on the print. I had the same model printed a while back, but it didn't have that issue. I'll try to get some pictures.

Hi Shapeways fans,

Planets Pyramid is a variation to the Recent Toys Planets puzzle. Whereas the Recent Toys version is a triangular pyramid (tetrahedron) with four balls, this version has five balls in a square-based pyramid shape. As there is more opportunity for blocking, this puzzle is a bit harder to solve than the classic Planets puzzle.

I first saw this object on the cover of this book. On the book the model was carved out of wood and I found it very hard to figure out what is going on.

The author describes his "Triple Whitehead" carving as three identical loops which are tangled together. From certain angles the loop looks like an inifnity symbol, hence the name. I finally managed to understand the geometry and create a 3D model of this object, using Mathematica. Here is a link to the model page.

Below is a photo of the object looking down on one of the infinity loops. I can visually separate the three loops, although it is not easy. You really need to see this object in 3D. Although the loops are separated by at least 0.5 mm so that they do not become fused together, there is very little play between them.

index.php?t=getfile&id=102937&private=0

This object is nearly 2 inches (4.6 cm) in diameter, as you can see from the size of the pennies under it. The cross section of one of the loops is 6 mm. Here is a view from another angle:

index.php?t=getfile&id=102938&private=0

Finally the model on top of the cover of the book! I tried to rotate the model to get the angle of view the same as the cover photograph but this was just too difficult.

Hi Non-Twisty Puzzles fans,

Irrational Gears is a gearing system with a gear ratio equal to the golden ratio, that is 1:1.6180339887.... Gear systems are supposed to have a rational gear ratio, that is one can be expressed as a/b, where a and b are both integers. The golden ratio is an irrational number that cannot be expressed this way. The golden ratio is known as the most irrational number.

This gear system was designed by expressing the golden ratio as 6.47213617... : 10.47213617... . This is close to 6.5:10.5=13:21, a well-known approximation of the golden ratio. The teeth are wrapped around two cylinders, one of which slides over a square bar. At a full rotation of the small gear, the large gear has made 0.6180339887... part of a full rotation. The angle (1-0.6180339887... x 360 = 137.507764068... degrees. is also known as the golden angle, found in many places in nature.

Hi Shapeways fans,

Planets Plus is a higher-order version of the Planets puzzle, produced by Recent Toys. This higher-order version nicely demonstrates how Planets balls can be stacked, as opposite to every crater, there is a non-crater, and vice verse. Unfortunately, the puzzle has a fatal flaw. It cannot be scrambled. Only two balls have enough freedom to turn, but not enough to allow other balls to turn.

Dear all,

I just want to share some of our earlier research results in 3D printing soft microstructures. Unfortunately, most of Shapeways' printers do not have high enough resolution to handle models with complex geometries. So I have included links to download the models and you can print them on any printers of your choice. Most decent resin-based printers should be able to handle them. All microstructures are self-supporting in axis-aligned directions.

2.5mm cell:

Sadly, Shapeways' auto-check prevents anyone from ordering any models with 2.5mm cells despite the fact they are perfectly printable as shown in the video. Feel free to download the raw models and print them yourselves.

Shapeways' auto-check allows printing these models in a few selected materials. No markup is added.

Hi Shapeways fans,

Fudgidron was suggested by Andreas Nortmann. It is a chamfered cube of which the chamfer faces have been fudged into a regular hexagon. Its closest relative is the Fudgedron, which is based on the geometry of a truncated octahedron. The main challenge of this design are the edges, which would jiggle loosely in the big gaps between adjacent hexagonal faces. The solution was to give each edge a centerboard that slides through grooves in the spherical core.

Thanks to Oliver Nagy for a great dye and assembly service!

Hi Shapeways fans,

Simplicity Plus is a harder version of the Simplicity sliding-piece puzzle, invented by Jimmy Stephens. Wil Strijbos came up with adding the letters "Simplicity" also on the white and yellow piece. In order to solve the puzzle, one has not only to reunite the red sphere, but to join the white and yellow piece as well. This puzzle is arguably the hardest simple sling blok puzzle.

Doraemon is a popular character in japenese anime and managa, where he is the title character. He's a robotic cat, with a mysterious pouch that breaks the 4th dimension. He can pull a variety of items from it, but ends up taking sometime to find what he actually needs. This pendant shows Doraemon jumping in glee, with a wide smile across his face.

Ordered in Rhodium, all details of his face are embossed beautifully, right down to the details in his bell.

I'm very impressed, thank you shapeways!

Hi Shapesways fans,

Planets 2.0 is a cubic variation to the Recent Toys Planets puzzle. Eight spheres are put in a cubic grid. Each of the spheres has two "craters" fitting to adjacent spheres. When not blocked by their craters, a sphere can rotate in one or more directions. The object of the puzzle is to scramble the spheres and then get them back to their original color-matched state.

I was trying to capture the look of water when I made this ring.

I think it looks quite good myself.
