Hi guys,

We've been undergoing a massive project to rebuild our infrastructure here at Shapeways to deliver all of the features and requests that are extremely important to all of you (and all of us).

Our VP of Engineering, Josh Levine, has put together a blog post that outlines some of the steps we're taking to work towards making projects like Printed Before Flag, Fewer Rejections, and Cheaper Shipping Options more feasible: http://www.shapeways.com/blog/archives/1460-Inside-Shapeways -Building-an-Infrastructure-for-Growth.html

One of the small releases we've been working on in the meantime went live today, in the form of an updated Homepage that more clearly spells out what Shapeways offers to new users. We often hear from Shop Owners and Makers alike that they tell people about Shapeways, only to find that they did not return to the site after trying to figure out what it really is that we do. The best way to do that: feature your designs!!

We decided to revisit our homepage for new users to improve the experience. We will be working on significant improvements to existing users for the homepage.

For those of you wondering where the projects I mentioned above are sitting, they are absolutely coming soon and you can read more about that here:
http://www.shapeways.com/blog/archives/1460-Inside-Shapeways -Building-an-Infrastructure-for-Growth.html

Hi and welcome to the Shapeways forum! 3D printing is a cool technology, but in the end it's the people who will really make it count. Thanks for joining us Smile If this is your first time here, check out the FAQs. Lots of answers to common questions can be found there.

The forum is where community members go to learn, create and inspire one another. It's an amazing place, and we want to keep it that way.

Read first. Then post
There's an incredible amount of knowledge and a wide range of people who hang out here. Read a few posts, get to know the tone and the humor. Once you do post, you'll have a much easier time getting or giving help. The more you engage with the community, the more you'll get out of the time you spend here.

Keep it human
Feel free to introduce yourself. Let us know who you are and what you're excited about. There are real humans behind all these screens, and that's a good thing!

Criticize constructively
Healthy debate and many discerning tastes are one of the best things about this community. But remember that not everything you say through text comes across with the smile, the laugh, or the good-natured sarcasm you may have intended. Take extra care to be (and sound) constructive. That said, if you see something that offends you, hit the report to moderator button and tell us why it offends you. Do not reply in retaliation, as this can make the problem worse.

Think before you post
Some things can be upsetting, but take a breath before you shoot back. If you're being demeaning, or are hurling personal attacks on others, you probably won't make many friends. Plus you run the risk of being banned. And that sucks. Please don't make us do that.

Run the boss test
We're not uptight, but we do need to make sure people feel comfortable. If you'd feel weird about your boss looking over your shoulder at whatever you're about to to post, you probably shouldn't post it. For argument's sake, let's assume you've got a cool boss.

Think Global. Think Big
One of the most amazing things about the Shapeways community is that we're dispersed all over the world. Remember that sometimes things can get lost in translation, and so it's probably best to always give people the benefit of the doubt.

Intellectual Property
Upload only models you have created, or that you have the rights to. Please don't copy other users designs, it's not good karma and it may get you banned.

Feedback
We love feedback, so there is a [ https://www.shapeways.com/forum/index.php?t=i&cat=12& ;]section[/url] to give feedback, to post suggestions and even complaints. Your first stop should be the Bug Reporting to report any bugs on the site or errors you see. The Suggestions section is for your improvements and idea, its a good idea to see if your question or issue has been raised already and post in that thread with your vote. That way we can see what topics have lots of votes. We check it regularly, so we know what's important to you.

Welcome and have fun!
Your moderators
Natalia, Michael, Stijn and Stony.

Hey all,

we're sorry, but we're currently experiencing a delay in the processing of some model uploads. A set of models from the last few weeks needs reprocessing because their 3D images were never rendered.

Any uploads done earlier today (including our 'easy co-creators' and API uploads) can be delayed by up to 8 hours. This impacts both the validation of the files (non-manifold checks etc), rendering of the 3D images and calculation of price quotes.

All new uploads will be fine.

If you have already deleted a model that now gets reprocessed, you will receive an error message which you can safely ignore.

We'll post an update to this message once things are back to normal again.

Bart

Hey guys,

I'm going to attempt to do these design updates more regularly. So here's to a monthly update!

New Updates:
Silver Glossy should be minimum 0.8mm thick. We've tried at 0.6mm over the past year and had to reject a majority of the orders. This is because when we hand polish the silver at 0.6mm, it becomes very fragile and often breaks (many of you who design for silver probably already got this message from customer service). So unfortunately, we need to raise the minimum now to 0.8mm.

WSF Stepping: Because we print layer by layer, sometimes you might see "print lines." Usually, we organize models so these print lines are minimized, but sometimes the print lines are unavoidable. We updated the WSF Material Pages with a picture of what these print lines might look like. Please note, these will not show up in every print.

FUD/FD Stepping: Due to the printing process, we need to place support material below the model. This support material can create small print lines in some parts, particularly if the part has flat surfaces. These print lines are small and not highly noticeable, however they will be exaggerated when painted. We updated the FUD/FD Material Pages with an picture of what these lines look like. We have tried and experimented a number of ways to minimize this, but at this point nothing we've tried can completely get rid of the things. We will continue to look into this though and hopefully will find some way to smooth out these lines.

FUD/FD Minimum Escape Hole: We are still developing the rules for this, but basically if you make the escape hole too small for hollow models, then the support material does not melt out completely and leaves residue. Currently, we are recommending a minimum of two 2mm diameter escape holes for solid models. Smaller holes will print, but the models will likely have wax residue. Bigger holes allows air in one end, and wax out the other. Based on some preliminary tests, we might have to increase this limit in the future. Last, we will still send out models if the escape holes are smaller, but the models will have wax residue in the models (which is not an issue if you intend to paint the model).

Stainless Steel Coloration: Due to the nature of our bronze infusion process (we infuse stainless with bronze to give it more strength), there may be slight variations in the color of your stainless steel model. Some models will have a slight bronze hue and others will be more silvery. We updated the material page for Stainless Steel to show the two extremes. We are investigating alternative infiltration techniques that will lessen the differences.

Thanks, let me know if you have any questions please!

Nancy

Hi everyone,

You might have noticed that your payments were a couple days late this month. The final payment was sent out Thursday the 19th. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this might have caused. The payments for March were not settled correctly and we had to correct this before paying out the month of April. We took some extra time to triple check the amounts to ensure that everyone was paid correctly. We take your shop finances very seriously and are doing everything we can to mitigate issues like this in the future.

Thanks for your patience the last couple days, and as always, please let us know if you any feedback. If you have any specific questions or concerns about this month's payment, please email us at service@shapeways.com and we'll look into it immediately.

We have researched color trends, asked the Shapeways community, leaked images on Shapeways Live, tested the colors in the streets of New York and finally it is time to release the fresh new colors on Shapeways.

We've gotten a lot of feedback on the Red & Indigo. The most common ones was to make the Red more red (done!) and make the Indigo either more blue or more purple (done! And we are still tweaking our blue).

http://www.shapeways.com/blog/uploads/Spring_colors_12_Shapeways-2.JPG

These colors are on a trial for three month, at which point if they are popular enough we will on board them as Permanent Colors!

You can read more about the new colors on the blog.

We will not add these colors automatically to any shops (even if they previously have had colors). So shopowners, please remember to enable these materials for purchase if you want these to show up in your shop, and remember to take photos of your newly colored prints when they arrive!

There are a few more colors in the works that we are still tweaking. Got any ideas for new colors? Let us know!

Hey everyone,

Today me and the rest of the team are rounding out one of the bigger days we've ever seen at Shapeways. In conjunction with our spot in the Wired Pop Up store, our holiday gifts guide, and a redesigned creators page and homepage, we announced today that we've closed our 2nd round of funding and are working on starting production right here in NY. If you'd like to check out the details, here's our blog post on it, and TechCrunch did a great write up.

For those of you who are wondering, our redesigned schopping cart is still in its final stages and we expect it will go live at some point tomorrow.

At the end of this very long push, in my rather exhausted state, I just wanted to take a chance to thank all of you for caring so much about what we're working on, and being part of it. Here's to good things to come!

Thanks,
Ana

Hey guys,

Later this month I'll be going on vacation, which means I won't be in town when we usually do Shapeways Live. I don't want to miss out on the chance to touch base though, so instead, I'll be doing a live chat this Wednesday at 2pm EST.

Just like the usual Shapeways Live deal, using the same chatroom, except we'll cut out the camera part and just focus on talking in the chatroom. Bring your questions and come hang out. I hope to see you there!

Hi all,

We'll have a website hardware upgrade starting on Wed 2011-09-28 08:30 UTC.
The expected maintenance mode time is half an hour.

This is when the downtime will start and this is when it will end in your local time.

Hi all,

we fixed a nasty shopowner invoice bug today. For certain users they didn't receive an email with a shopowner invoice for when they had sold models in their shop.
These are now recreated and sent.

Best,

Barry

Hi all,

we had a small site update today.

- The calculations of the surface area of old models are finished. All models that made it through the current processing chain have Glazed Ceramics now available as material. Note, you have to remove this material yourself from the restricted materials list.
- Remove double base64 encode requirement for models in the SOAP API. Any double encoded models will still be accepted to make it backwise compatible.
- Earlier this week we had an update in the options for the availability and view state of models. We made two checkboxes 'Listed on site?' and 'Allow others to purchase?' to replace the old dropdown for 'show and allow ordering'.

Hi all,

we had a small site update today. We fixed the following issues:

- The manual approval of new shops has been removed. Users that create a new shop can edit them directly.

- The shopcategory links on the shop page and shop-detail page were not working because they do their selection on the category name instead of the category id. This has been fixed.

- When you clicked on the username of a customer in your 'my to do' list on the mydesigns page, you are redirected to the forum pm. After sending the pm, you should be redirected to the mydesigns page. This redirection was broken when you clicked the preview message button.

- You couldnt save your profile when you were logged in normally and had a connection to facebook/twitter in your profile settings, while you were not connected at that time. This has been fixed.

Hi all,

yesterday we had a small update. We released the following features/bugfixes:

- The tags on the product details page (view mode) are now clickable and end up to the gallery search page with the filter for that tag pre-selected.

- Due to the new markup per material setting in product details page and markup inventory page, the Shapeways api could not handle markup settings anymore. This has been fixed for now and a markup set in the upload api will hold for every material of that model.

Hi all,

yesterday we had a site update. We released the following features/bugfixes:

- There were some javascript errors for IE7, that occured on various places that could cause the login for example not to work. These have been fixed.

- We released a new version of MeshMedic and updated some other scripts in our upload chain. This includes that there will be less failing uploads for collada files. This occured when a collada file instantiates the same node multiple times. Also references to textures in vrml (def/use for color, normals, textures) were removed, so this has been fixed. The new meshmedic include fixes for rounding errors in volume calculation if a part is far away from the origin and it improved boolean and mesh merging stability.

- The lightpoem has a slightly less maximum textlength (175 instead of 255) to prevent that the lightpoem will be rejected due to the polygon limit.

Hi all,

I'm trying to find which parts in our website generate an annoying (segfault) error.
For this I might have to restart the site a few times, sorry for this.
Just reload the page if you're thrown out and all should be fine.

Hi all,

we had a major site update yesterday. Two months ago we had the first part of the new architecture of our site, yesterday we launched the second part. Though it has no functionality changes, it will help for our future development.

Besides that we launched our new Gift coupons . Never can decide what to give your friends/family as a gift? Let them choose themselves by giving them a gift coupon.

We also changed the 'lost password' process. In case you forgot your password, you can now directly change them on the site (after a confirmation by email) instead of a new random password is sent to you by email.

Kind regards,
Barry

Hi All,

A second release in one week! This time on the regular Thursday morning time slot.

Today's update includes the following new features:

Share 'My Favorites'
Users are now able to share their favorite products collection to other users. An option to turn his favorites public is added to the 'my designs' page.

Google Analytics support for shop owners
A shopowners can now track his/her shop using Google Analytics. You can add your Google Analytics code in the shop configuration page and from then on, your shop landing page and product pages will be monitored.

Communicate leadtime on payment options
In the order summary we now show the leadtime for each payment option. This to prevent confusion, as bank transfers typically take a bit longer to clear, compared to paypal.

And the following Fixes

  • On a Mac, using Chrome the image on the product detail page shrinks when clicking on the image. We updated a library so it is now combatible with the latest Chrome version.
  • Some pages had 'Shapeways |' gone from the title (shown as window title). We fixed that.

Kind regards, Arno

Hi all,

Yesterday we updated our site. We released the following features and bugfixes:

Download original uploaded file
Product owners can now download the original uploaded file and make this download available for other users.

Set product availability to "hidden"
With products set to hidden, products can't be found through the galleries and search options, but other people can still buy the product by means of the direct URL of the product. An extra random security key is added to the URL and the owner can see this URL in his product details page and can share it to the one he wants to sell his product.

Bankpayment order confirmation lightbox
An extra confirmation lightbox is added for bankpayment orders to prevent customers mistakely choosing bankpayment while they dont want to.

Add material info to Co-Creator info order
In the 'my to do' list for co-creator designers the material is added, so the designer can keep in mind the design rules for certain materials (think of wall-thickness).

Placeholder for images added to the galleries
A placeholder for images is added to the galleries to speed up the rendering of the page.

move "your model is being processed..." beneath thumb
The "your model is being processed..." box when you update your model is now placed directly under the thumb of your model.

Kind regards,
Barry

Hi All,

Today we had another release which introduces a nice new feature for you. We have done a major update to the material selection

With the growth of the number of materials, the dropdown to select in which material you'd want to order a product was not handy anymore. And, you cannot see the materials.

Hence we have made a new material selection. It has been moved from the right column to the main screen on the product details page. We have grouped the materials to types. For each material we show a picture and an explanation. When you select a material, the model price in that material is displayed.

We expect the new material selection to be a big improvement.

Along the way, we also did a bugfix for the displayed prices for creator models (eg lightpoem, ringpoem). The product details page listed the price without VAT. With this fix, when you are logged in, the price including VAT is displayed.

Kind regards, Arno van Rossum

PS: Due to the material selection change, we are updating the price cache (we calculate the price for each model in each material). This takes some server time, so today model uploads can take longer to process, sorry for the inconvenience

Hi All,

Just wanted to inform you of today's update which had some minor changes for you:

Putting your products in a specific order in your shop using the "edit my shop" page had some issues, especially for large shops (eg, Oskars Puzzles). We think it is under control now, sorry for the inconvenience.

And:
We noticed that the forum kept on sending mails as joris@shapeways where we had the configuration changed. Confusing.
We fixed that, so now the forum mails originate from service@shapeways.com

More next week Very Happy

Kind regards, Arno

Hi all,

Today we had a minor release, with some fixes and improvements:

* We could not yet use the same subcategory name under different main categories. Now we can, so we can for each main category create eg a category for co-creators

* The site search results now shows the user avatar for results that are of type user.

* The product details page automatically gets meta tags for title, description and keywords, making your models better to find.

* From the order screen you can use the 'continue shopping' link to return to the product details. If you did that, the 'back to gallery' link on the product details page was broken, which is now fixed.

* The default sort in My Design gallery is now on model upload date

* Model owners can now see the model volume in the product details page

Earlier this week the following we already released a fix so that models which are for sale do not get the 'not for sale' marking when viewing them in the gallery, which happened for some models.

kind regards, Arno

I work here
Hi all,

Yesterday we updated our site. We released the following features and bugfixes:

Model details received an update
The model details page is now converted to a product details page. We feel this better reflects on what the page is about.

Product description edit box has moved from right column to main page
This way the product description is much easier to edit and format. There is more room and the position is the same as for your customers.

Tweet about your order
When you place an order with us you can tell the world about the wonderful things you bought with us. Totally voluntary of course. Very Happy
Available on the order confirmation page.

Easier selection of payment method when you order
The payment options were a bit hidden inside the order review page. It is now much easier to spot that you can choose and what the options are.

Opt-in for manual model fixing
Failed uploads of 3D models were automatically added to the manual model fixing queue. This is now an opt-in option which you can select on the model upload page.

Removed "Enlarge" button from product details page

We also fixed the following issues:
* saving product categories sometimes failed when the max. number of categories were selected
* site search (right top corner) failed when you used quotes ""
* Hanging blue overlay in category box in FF 3.6.6
* Deleted models were not removed from the search index

Best,

Robert

Hi All,

This week we have done our site-update on Wednesday. We have the following features and improvements:

* Youtube video

Robert already hinted to this feature after the previous update and it is finally here:
From now on you have the ability to add a youtube link to the model details. The video will be embedded on the model detail page.
In the galleries you can easily see which products have a youtube video as they have a little 'play' icon over the thumbnail.

* Product search improvement
We have improved the results of the product search. More relevant products will be shown higher in the search results.

* Layout issues subcategories
Some layout issues for the subcategories have now been fixed.

Kind regards, Arno

We're about to change some calculations in our 3D upload and pricing software. As it may impact the pricing of your objects, it's important that you spare a few minutes to read this article.

Hi All,

Today we've done a minor update of our site.

* For our non-metric users we have added the bounding box size at the models detail page in inches. (you can select between inches and centimeters, you choice will be saved in a cookie).

* Updated the layout of the tooltips (as announced with the May 27th release)

* The ShareThis code had a little update to show the icons directly instead of alternating (easier for the eye Wink )

* Fixed a bug in the removal of products from categories. Sometimes the product stayed visible in a category, even when the category was removed from the product (caching issue)

Kind regards, Arno

Hi all,

last week we had a major update of our site. I already mentioned this briefly in the server migration thread but it deserves it's own thread ...

We introduced Euro currency support on our site. This is fulfilling a big wish of our European customers.

In your checkout where the Shapeways order summary is shown, you can now choose between:

  • Paypal Dollars
  • Paypal Euros
  • Bank transfer

making it possible to go to Paypal and pay with Euros. For bank transfer you can choose yourself to transfer Dollars or Euros.

Accompanying this feature, we list all model prices in both Dollars and Euros, and in your shopping cart the totals are displayed in Euros too.

I am sure you'll appreciate this feature (at least, all in the Euro zone)

Also we did some smaller changes/fixes to the site:

  • hide comment page numbering on model details when there is only 1 page of comments - the 1 at the bottom looked a bit silly in case there were not much comments
  • social bookmarking / tagging - For all models and shops there is now be a social sharing widget that allows you to easily and quickly share the model or shop with various social websites
  • updated the forum icon/lightbolt "new content" to have more contrast
  • when visiting the design overview page of a non-shopowner, it had 'my designs' as title instead of <name>'s designs, we fixed that.

Kind regards, Arno van Rossum

Hi All,

Today we have had another site update. The most noticeable for you is that we updated the gallery component.
We have made it more uniform so that all galleries look the same. You can notice this eg on the home page where the displayed models now show prices and small icons (the shopping cart when the model is for sale, the wrench when it is a co-creator template).

The new galleries meant re-indexing the models. As you have already uploaded so many models, this took a while.

Other minor changes are:
- The tickbox for e-mail preferences on profile wasn't working correctly, this has now been corrected.
- Community has a new sub menu: contests (and yes, we noticed that you don't see that option yet when on the forum Sad sorry, working on that to get it fixed asap)

Kind regards, Arno

We have compiled two documents to give you some background information on our printing process. The first, 'What is 3D printing?' explains the basics of Rapid Manufacturing and gives some useful links to external resources on the topic.

The second, 'Production Method - FDM', describes the printing process that is currently in use by us, shows some product samples and lists the properties of FDM models.

I hope you'll find it useful!

Cheers,

Bart
