Hi Shapies,

Here is my latest piece, Gear Heart; an extension of the Gear Ball project and Maker Faire contest entry.

It is also a tribute to papercraft artist Haruki Nakamura's kinetic sculpture, Gear's Heart.
(His amazing YouTube video can be seen here: Gear's Heart)

Gear Heart
http://www.kilbit.com/gear_heart.jpg

A sample of what it looks like when rotated.
http://www.kilbit.com/gear_heart_rotated.jpg

It looks good in red. Smile
http://www.kilbit.com/gear_heart_red.jpg

I started this topic because the 2+ pages of comments on the product page can get a little confusing.

Here are some answers to a few of the questions I've received:
The model has been ordered and is currently being printed. I will definitely post pictures (and video!) to the "It arrived!" forum when it arrives.
It uses the same core/connectors as the Gear Ball, so I don't anticipate any mechanical problems.
All 13 parts are hollow to a thickness of 2mm.
I do plan on acid dying it red, so I'll be sure to share that experience, too. Smile

The product page can be found, here:
http://www.shapeways.com/model/29355/gear_heart.html

I hope you all like it. Smile
If you do, please give it a rating!

Thanks!
David

So, I saw all of those wonderful mathematical knotty things and thought I'd try the same:

http://img93.imageshack.us/img93/8074/3curved.jpg

My inspiration for the shape was the mathematical figure, "Compound of 5 Tetrahedra." It took quite a while faffing around in blender to get that thing right. I had a pretty well-defined picture in my mind already, so the first step I did was create the outline of the shape except, instead of letting the wires follow the tetrahedra, I had them start at the vertex then angle down into the five-pointed star. This produced a messy, angular shape, which I had intended to use as a jump-point to a more pleasant version.
So I rotated the intersections points a bit and put some more resolution in the arms. At this point though, there wasn't the interlocking of adjacent strands you see here. I also had to figure out exactly how I was going to duplicate the single component across the entire model, since there was no way I could work with the whole thing at the same time! In the end I had to use 4 array modifiers, producing 3, 2, 2 and 5 copies each, for a total of 60 copies of the initial piece. After some fiddling I got the merging working nicely and I increased the rotation to obtain the interlocking.
Deciding that using simple subsurf wasn't going to cut it, I replaced the old arm with a new one made of a beveled curve to get a more uniform appearance. After converting it and manually filling in faces/vertex pushing to get it to merge at the intersections, and you have what you see here!

Here is the uploaded model page Initially I tried to upload a 3-level subsurfed model - oops - 600,000 or so triangles >_< Just 160k with level 2, thankfully.

Now that I have a range of puzzles on offer I have decided to rationalise the price list and offer you some top quality items with minimal mark-up.
The larger puzzles warrant an order of their own, whilst the smaller ones make great fillers when you need to top that order up to $25.

Catalogue at 3rd April 2009
http://www.shapeways.com/shoplogo/105.jpg

  1. Steady State Cube - 2.4 cm - $25
  2. Happiness Cube - 2.1 cm - $20
  3. Cubed Burr II - 2.1 cm - $20
  4. Primary Gain Cube - 1.6 cm - $10
  5. Tertiary Gain Cube - 1.6 cm - $10
  6. Inside Out Cube - 1.5 cm - $9
  7. The Seldom Seen Cube - 1.5 cm - $9
  8. World's Smallest Cube Puzzle - 0.75 cm - $2

Treat yourself to a challenge.

A quick one from last night.
It could be considered my first real try at a face, so the anatomy is probably totally off haha.

Still have to make a small stand for it and then the printing fun can begin.

Hello folks,

I thought I might show you a work-in-progress that I have entered into the 3d metal print contest.

It's called a Nocturnal ... or sometimes a Nocturlab. This is an ancient device that mostly sailors used to use to tell time at night when you could see the stars in the Northern Hemisphere. It works very nicely as a pendant.

http://www.shapeways.com/modules/udesign/utils/openfile.php?id=12075&f=photos/photo928.jpg

It works on the principle that the north star (currently Polaris) sits in the centre of the night sky, while the rest of the stars revolve around it. In truth, it's the earth that is revolving, and Polaris is the closest star aligned to our north pole so it remains mostly stationary.

Since the rotation shifts throughout the year due to the earth's position around the sun, the Nocturnal has special dials to compensate for this.

The first dial, which rotates around the edge, is used to point to the day of the year that you are viewing the sky. The months are indicated in letters around the edge. Then, you hold the Nocturnal in front of you, until you locate the star Polaris (our current north star) through the hole in the middle. Next, you use the long pointer to point to the two aligned stars at the end of the bowl of the Big Dipper. Once this is all done, you look a little lower on the long pointer to see that there is a smaller pointer embedded in it. This smaller pointer points to a roman numeral, which itells you the time. If it points to the beginning of the circle which holds the numeral, then it reads on the hour. The further along the circle the dial points, the later in the hour it is (ie. in the middle of the numeral would read half past).

The image above points to February 11th at 4pm ... assuming you can see the stars at 4pm! I set it to that time because it looks nicely balanced yet not too symmetrical in the picture Rolling Eyes

A little complex, but useful and low on energy Wink

Here is a link to the product... I have ordered a few to test the item. Once it passes the test, I will offer it for sale.

http://www.shapeways.com/model/12075/nocturnal.html

Here is my entry for the AWN thingy... Quite a huge and ambitious object, but this one is also a long time dream of mine (like the Galatean Dream object).

By the way, the head in this object is as big as the Galatean Dream object... I modified the hair meshes from my previous experience with GD. Built a 0.5 mm cube in Blender and then fattened the hair strands to stay within limits...

http://www.shapeways.com/model/6227/modern_knight_templar.ht ml

http://www.shapeways.com/modules/udesign/utils/openfile.php?id=6227&f=6227_large.jpg

I had difficulty to make it printable but managed to squeeze it down the tube by trimming some unnecessary polys... (thanks for the explanations Bart).

I might look at the mesh again as there might be other ways to put more details where they are needed and sacrifice poly where it will not affect the overall structure...

And I will try to hollow the pedestal too...

Let me know what you think of it (and for shapeways staff taking a look, what possibly could Jeopardize the printing of such a huge piece... maybe it's unprintable too aaaugh)

PS : for those wondering, the inspiration comes from a now defunct game named HellGate: London... Quite an interesting universe and game. But hey... because of modern economy and all sort of monkey business... it didn't hit (it busted in fact... anyway... moving on)

Have the old timey gray SW renders been dropped from new models? I can't figure out if them not always showing up is a bug or an update. Is this related to a change during the last week or so?

If they are a thing of the past I'd like to at least still see them privately and use as when needed.

Why is that so? and can it please be fixed?

I created some spheres the other day for some testing and then deleted them. For some reason I still have one and it's visible in my store. It's not visible in my library and if you click on it you are led to an Ooops this page does not exist error.

Hi,

I see a similar problem the first time and usually had correct it manually. However, it is becomes a system. As example, I make csv-file...

index.php?t=getfile&id=107025&private=0

Then upload it to SW...

index.php?t=getfile&id=107026&private=0

Then see it...

index.php?t=getfile&id=107027&private=0

then it...

index.php?t=getfile&id=107029&private=0

and similar result in other item...

For a couple of weeks now, the RSS for the forums has not been working correctly:
http://www.shapeways.com/forum/rdf.php?mode=m&l=1&ba sic=1

One example is: (note the part in red)

https://www.shapeways.com/forum/index.php?t=rview&ampgoto=118921&ampth=28166#msg_118921

the "amp" should either have a semicolon after it, or should not be present at all.

I think the RSS has other problems, but this is the most noticable. I use 3 different RSS readers, and none of them are happy.

Is anybody else not getting notifications for new postings in threads they participated in today? I notice shapeways' mailserver pounding mine but always timing out before even transmitting header data, wonder if it's just me (though nothing changed at our end and other mail gets through) and if it is only the rather unimportant forum alerts that could be affected. (Noted someone else is waiting for replies from service and suspecting the webmail interface in another thread)
EDIT:Never mind, seems to have sorted itself. Upstream nameservers acting weird for some time today may have had something to do with it.

Tried the new market filters today:

The price range selector is not really easily placeable below 100, which is maybe an often needed range.

When I select flexible as material I get a lot of my models. Whereas black and white are true for sure the top ranked are lila which I don't believe at all.

I think it was once possible to do a search of the blog archive limited by a chosen category - now when I do it, I can either enter a search term (that tends to hit lots of designer spotlights and "human interest" stories that are totally unrelated if the word is common enough like "glass") OR choose a category, which brings up all the articles in that category. (Which even for "3D printing materials" brings up enough mis-categorized spotlight and background articles among the 75 hits to be frustrating when one just wants to revisit an old posting about one of shapeways' (past) material offerings).
(General mini-rant: the blog has become so stuffed with fluff that I rarely visit it anymore - perhaps it could be split into an "entertainment" or "people" and a technical section ?)

Hi,

I attach my test file for uploading as markup. Shapeways not work with it file. But ten minutes ago all worked fine. What's happens?

Thank you.

PS. It works again but (as earlier) not work for big data (1000+ changes or 4000+ rows). It would be cool if current "progress-bar" becomes more informative like in Windows.

PPS. It does not work again...

PPPS. When transaction was break due to hangup it does not work again...

While reading through your Sandstone printing page, I found this sentence at the bottom of the page under the heading/subheading "Material Info - Look and feel"

"We optimize each print run to make individual models look great, may see differences in color when looking at multiple prints of the same model side by side."

Between great and may there appears to be a word missing.

Just thought you might want to know.

These are very similar and easy to mistake in smaller point sizes.

Where the Units can vary, it is normally good practice to identify the
Unit being shown in any Keys/Legends/Headers.

Could we please have say the National Flags at the head of the columns
labeled "Price"

Also, how is it you will not then accept payment in UK Pounds?

I had an order placed for one of my items that comes in multiple sizes and have a problem uploading the size required because it is not passing max volume. My confusion is that I set my max volume = to the largest size, which this is. What I'm wondering is if there is an extra 5th decimal place that's not shown and my volume is rounding up and failing? I'm sure I could just do a small tweak to my model to round down that tiny bit but I'm wondering if there could be a bigger problem. In the future I'll set my max volume larger than my largest size to avoid this problem.

Hello SW,

I noticed that many popular products are not displayed anymore in the filtering!
https://www.shapeways.com/marketplace/miniatures?tag=1%2F160

For example: one our most popular kits: http://shpws.me/D1eJ is not shown at all.
If you select 'scale models' and look at 1/160 scale, this kit should pop-up at number 5 or so. Now it is not displayed.
If you are searching on price level, this kit will not be shown at all. That is not good.

All our products are tagged and used to show up properly.

I also noticed that some of our products that are slow sellers pop-up at pretty high places.

Maybe your algorithm is not working properly.

Can you please fix this?

Regards,
Maurice

Hello SW,

The uploading issues with photos seemed to be solved now.

Now I get the following issue:

I cannot update the descriptin text. All modifications are not saved. Furthermore the browser continuously asks me to stay on the page. I tried to save the changes. But mostly without success.

Can you please solve this. The whole refreshing/saving functionality remains goofy.

Regards,
Maurice

Shapeways,

Please let me delete my old uploaded files.
Now I cannot see any files on [My Models] page. The page only shows "We migrated filters for managing your products to Shop Inventory."
There is no file.
On my [Shop Inventory], there are all the files. There is no option to delete them.
Also, people can see the files which I did not want to show.

Please add check box for deleting many files at once.
I hope to hear any good news.
