We released a new feature yesterday : use your Facebook and Twitter account to login to the Shapeways site.
Next to that we increased the memory of our model repair server and fixed a login bug.
The upgrade caused downtime from 11:01 - 12:54 UTC.

whooo....ooooo
That seems to have fixed the 'error while unifying:17' report
But, for the same modle that created that error, i now get;
| Quote: | Unfortunately, we were not able to process and thus print your product. The error message was:
Calculation failed. This means that our Mesh Medic could not fix or merge your design
|
The model doesn't need to be merged or fixed... it's an item comprising of 1842 chainmail style interlaced links (shells) comprising of a total of 249216 triangles.
Now, before you say 'too many shells' - 3053 shells (similar style design) is printable with a total of 97696 triangles.
Any ideas?
I don't really want to change the design as the item matches another piece already printable.
Cheers,
Paul

Hi Paul,
I'm a bit surprised how this could have had influence on the 'error while unifying:17' reports from the model processing pipeline.
Do you know the model ID where you got the "Calculation failed" for ? Then I can have a look at it.
About the "doesn't need to be merged or fixed" we automatically check every uploaded model for printability. Maybe the wording is confusing.
regards,
Hans

Hi Hans,
The model failed the upload process, so no model id - but the filename is 7mm 1842 links place mat (fixed).stl -
mmm....
Now I'm getting confused...
I went to the failure email source to grab the timestamp it was sent and noticed the plain text & html give different reasons for the faillure;
plain text = error while unifying:17
html = calculation error
(see below)
Shall I just re-upload the file with the 'please fix my model' box checked?
Cheers
Paul

Hi Paul,
Your model ID is 223836 , the reason the meshmedic exited is because it hit a timeout limit meaning that it took too long to process your model.
So uploading again with a 'manual fix request' won't help; we need faster hardware or grant these processes even more processing time ...
We'll get back to you on this one.

After discussion with Barry we think a manual fixing attempt might be useful, let's try this.

stop4stuff,
I realize that this may not be an ideal solution. Have you tried processing your model through The Netfabb Cloud Thingie? You can download a "fixed" model when it is done processing. I am not certain if it will modify your chain mail in undesirable ways, but it might be worth a shot.

NetFabb Cloud throws out the same 'calculation failed' error, in NetFabb Basic, no faults are found... I've come to the conclusion that my model is just too awesome for automated processes to cope with

Hi Robert,
My design uploaded ok , however it is only available in WSF, white, black and transparent detail... ideally it should be available in the dyed colour too, any ideas?
Cheers,
Paul

What's the bounding box? They dyed materials are not available in the larger WSF machine.

The bounding box is 29.8 x x 24.2 x 025 cm.
Do Shapeways need to get a bigger dye bucket?

I believe the dying is a pre-process technique. Doing a quick search I'm not able to find the max bounding box for dyed WSF. I have already requested it be added to the material page, so as those are updated it should be there eventually.

Well it is actually a post process technique.
The issue is that we cannot fit anything bigger than 23.3 x 18.4 x 31.7 cm in the dying pans. We need to get some bigger pans!

I managed to hit the timeout again
Just an idea;
Would it be possible for us users to have the same (or similar) software to MeshMedic check models locally and then upload to Shapeways - the way I figure it, this would save on Shapeways resources and allow people like me to upload hugely interlaced shells without the need to figure out the shells/faces ratio.
