You Steamunk D4 would have a whole load more steampunk credibility if the gears were functional e.g. center gear stationary (sun gear) and planet gears on a carrier, the carrier of each face's planet gears geared together Wink

Functionality of the gears isn't requested. only style and accuracy.

Besides, 'moving parts' are guaranteed to result order cancellation by shapeways reviewer with Stainless steel..

Oh, ok... do you mind if I do a version with moving parts?

Actually, as soon as Frosted Detail was announced, I began to design a die with moving parts for this material (the moving parts being gears). Mine is a D6, but another one that would be easier to do is a D8 (4 faces at a vertex so 4 gears: they can actually turn whereas 3 gears at a vertex like a D4, a D6 or D12 won't turn, neither 5 gears of a D20).

So many things to design, so little time...

@Magic, I was thinking more or less as I described earlier, and with the D4 as in dizingof's design there is easily scope for one larger crown (bevel) gear in the center connected to one face with the other 3 faces geared onto that with smaller crown gears. (i hope that makes as much sense to you as it does to me Wink)

You mean like in the figure 1 on my drawing?
index.php?t=getfile&id=8540&private=0
Yes this is possible, but you have to allow the 3 satellites to have their axes moving around the centered gear.
What I meant is that instead figure 2 is impossible. It can be seen in the lower figure: if the left and right gear are turning one clockwise and the other anticlockwise, there is no direction in which the top gear can turn to respect both those rotations at the same time.

So many things to design, so little time...

Yes as in #1, with the sattelite/planet gears on a carrier that has an central axle to (3 small + 1 large) bevel gears that mesh in the center of the die.

OK, yes, it is doable. You will have to add a satellites holder (for instance a Y shape) to make the 3 small gears axles be able to turn around the central axle.
As Dizingof said, I don't think this will be allowed in metal (no more moving parts, and strict wall thickness rules, as far as I know), but perhaps Frosted Detail will do it. At least that's what I will try for mine.

Thanks! You shouldn't need your microscope, the white filled hollow space piping is 0.35mm diameter, overall size is 10 x 10 x 10 mm.
