STEP BY STEP > How to set up your jewelry shop with different ring sizes

Hello to all of you new shop owners. My name is Michael C. Poulsen and I'm the owner of the shop 'Inspired By Architecture':
http://www.shapeways.com/shops/IBA

Setting up your shop properly is crucial for how your customers (or shop visitors) will experience your shop. I found that it requires lots of discipline and lots of time to do this. However when you're finished you will feel good :-)

This step by step turorial will be base don setting up a jewelry shop offering different ring sizes. You may want to check out my shop and see if this is what you want before going through the hole tutorial!

Offering different ring sizes (different size of same model) for sale can basically be done in 2 ways:
1) You can decide to make your model a co-creator model and allow your customers to customize the model. And here you can the set up the parameters for offering different ring sizes (this tutorial will NOT deal with this way to offer different ring sizes because it is not what I wanted for my shop)

2) You can upload a separate file of the model for each ring size you want to offer for sale. (This is what I have done in the 'Inspired By Architecture' shop and this is what I will explain in this tutorial).

First of all you should know that setting up a shop in shapeways properly takes time no matter what. But you should also know that the time you invest in your shop is well invested.
Setting up a shop that offers different ring sizes by uploading a separate file for each ring size is complicated. It NOT difficult... but complicated... and it is extremely time consuming. However as mentioned above the time invested is well invested.

THE TUTORIAL BEGINS HERE:
1. It requires great discipline to stay organized and not loosing the total overview. Therefore I recommend that you create a Word-document for each model that you are going to offer for sale.

2. Create a word document for your model (for each model). Begin with A) the name of the model then B) the description for your model C) the materials you want to offer D) the markup you want to make for each material and E) the tags you want for the model. Finally you would want F) each size of the model you would want to offer for sale. Put the different sizes on each their line allowing for an URL (link underneath it).

3. Next thing create a 3d file for each ring size if you have not already done so. If you're organize you name the model with the name of the design + the ring size (you will find this usefull later)

4. Upload the models. You can edit them later when they are all uploaded

5. Next thing you would want to do is editing tou models. Start with the smallest size and work your way up through the different sized in order to work structurized.

6. Now you will find the word document usefull because this is the template with holds all the information you want to put for your model. I recommend that you along with the title also mention the ring size and not ONLY the name. This way the customers will know what size they are about to purchase.

7. Continue with editting A) the description (copy-paste from your word document) B) the categories e g jewelry and rings C) The shop section if you have created any when you opened the shop or you can still create any if you find this usefull for your shop e.g to quickly browse through the various designs C) Put the tags that you desiced for your model in the word document D) upload your NICE images (properly dimensioned 625x465 pixels and use the dropbox to tell which material is shown. Use REAL photos of REAL 3D prints rather than 3D renderings in order to let your customers see what they are actually buying E) you may even add viedo content. LEAVE OUT the visibility section until you are done editing the models.

8. Once you have completed the editing of all sizes of your model you now have to choose which size you want to set as the default size in the shop.

9. Edit the desired default size. Now go to the visibility section and mark the 'offer for sale to others' AND the 'display to the public' and save changes.

10. Continue with the rest of the ring sizes BUT for the rest of the ring sizes uploaded only mark the 'offer for sale to others and NOT the 'display to the public. This way the customers will only see 1 ring size of each design and not all of them. Displaying all of the ring sizes for the public will mess up your shop and make it look unorganised. The customers will see 6-8 models (or how many sizes you are offering) of the same design. And if you have several different ring designs the other designs may not even be displayed on the front page of your shop. Also in the respect of collecting 'add to favorites' by other users those 'add to favorites' may be randomly spread out over all the different sizes instead of having ONE model to collect all the 'add to favorites' :-)

11. Now, as only one of the ring sizes (the one you made your default) is displayed to the public you will need to inter-link between the public displayed model and the 'private for sale' models. This is done by adding HTML code in the model description. If you are not familiar with HTLM coding DON'T worry :-) Shapeways labs are doing most of this for you if you follow the link below (#14)

12. Now before proceeding to the Shapeways Labs you need to copy the URLS of the models for sale. Go to your models. Then press the press the tab called 'for sale' and you will see all your models offered for sale. If you press the 'private' then 'for sale' you will see all your models that are private (hidden to the public) but still for sale. This way you can double check which models are private. Only the one that you determined to be your default ring size should be displayed when pressing the'public' tab.

13. Now start with the smallest ring size and press the image (NOT the edit model link). Once the page has loaded copy the URL in your browser address line. Paste it into your word document under the corresponding ring size. Proceed this way with all of the ring sizes. Once you have copied ALL the URLs for your models for sale into your word document proceed to the link below (#14)

14. http://www.shapeways.com/labs

15. In the above link scroll down to 'create variants'

16. Each of you ring sizes will need their own line. In the 'option name' you put the size of the ring starting with the smallest one and in the 'model URL' you copy-paste the respective URL from your word document (corresponding with the proper ring size).

17. A code is automatically generated in the box below. Now copy this CODE into your word document.

18. The annoying thing is, that the code generated (at the time being June 2014) is generating a code which automatically puts the URL (the model) in the shopping basket with the default material. This means that the customers will not be able to choose material. Therefore you will need modify the code. DON'T worry... you dont need to know ANYTHING about HTLM code if you simply follow my guide.

19. I have pasted in my own modified code below (at the end of the tutorial) for a ring offered for sale in 6 different sizes in my shop with inter-links between public and private URLs. To see the code highlighted in the colors described (to clarify stuff for you) you must open the attached pdf. First you will see the original code generated by Shapeways labs and below that my modified code. The ONLY thing done (and which you'll have to do) is to change the href-links. The href-links which I have marked with PURPLE has been replaced by the href-links marked with GREEN. The text marked in YELLOW is just the underline for you the name of the corresponding button/link. This codes are also attached in a pdf for you to print.... This may be easier for you to follow then. So what will you have to do in your case. Well, identify the href-links (PURPLE) in your code generated by Shapeways labs and replace them with the URLs you have copied to your word document (for each ring size).

20. Once completed with #19 you now have to copy this modified code into the description of your models (ring size models). Go to models > then click on edit mode > then press the tab called detail > paste the code into the description box after your description. As sonn as you have pasted it in and click beside the box you will actually see the links displayed as 'buttons'-like boxes in the description field. SAVE CHANGES and proceed with all the remaining ring sizes (models).

21. If you experience that models marked as private does appear under private after you marked them and double checked, you might want to empty the buffer of your browser as it sometimes remember old settings that may give you a headache trying to trouble shoot. Empty your browser buffer o reven restart you browser if you experience such trouble.

I hope this totorial was helpful to you and that it will save you a lot of time and trouble when setting up your shop. I hope you will stop by my shop... and if you like what you see don't forget to put a few 'add to favorites' :-)

Cheers,

Michael C. Poulsen / Inspired By Architecture

Hi Shapies,

IMPORTANT UPDATE! If you are going to follow my tutorial please be aware of the following:
Due to a change of interface done by Shapeways there is an impact on point 13 in my tutorial. When clicking the product photo according to point 13 you are now (after interface has been changed) redirected to the edit product page. This is NOT the URL you want to copy. Instead proceed with clicking the 'view product' button in the upper right corner. Clicking the 'view product' button will redirect you to a new URL and this is the URL you need to copy according to point 13 in the tutorial :-)

I will update it once I get the time but until then just do as above when reaching point 13.

Also I would appreciate if you would leave a comment once you have used the tutorial so other users can see if you're happy :-) Just found out that Shapeways are actually suggesting this tutorial to shop owner and that's cool. However I guess we are all waiting for Shapeways to actually implement this issue on different sizes of a product (like ring sizes) in a neat way to save you all the trouble.

Anyways, Hope you like the tutorial,

MIke

Hi Guys,

Mike's method works well and I think it's a good way to do.

With the shapeways interface change, the protocol differs slightly - I let Mike explain this in an addendum -, but still, hiding the variants seems to be the way to go today.
