You have to be fast and you have to move the mouse cursor directly down, over the the ^ area. If you try to move it towards the left, it closes too easily. It happens with all other menus in the top bar too, and is becoming a classic fumble of UI design.
Mind sharing what browser and os you are using? We've found "gaps" that cause the menu to close too soon in the past and we can take a look if you share where you're having trouble! In the meantime, you can always log in by going to www.shapeways.com/login Not a perfect solution, but I promise that page has no hovers on it
