OK, I think I got the hang of using the UV/Image editor in Blender 2.49 on a Debian Squeeze box.
However, an error message occurs when my image (yeah, using my little duckie) on ONE side of a cube.
If the image is placed on ALL sides of the cube, no problem-o.
So is it not possible to map to only one side for color printing?

Assign the faces you want to unwrap 1 material, assign the rest of the faces another material. Since you are colorprinting, might as well get your inks worth.
Have any questions regarding Blender, and need fast answers, you are always welcome at the IRC Server Freenode, channel #blender. As a bonus, several there have experience in modelling for 3D prints.

Changed the images to flag and torch.
This seems to work. Image is upside down but you get the idea.
Maybe Shapeways' software doesn't handle ducks!
Thanks for your help and advice.
