Yay, it arrived! First 3D models I have ever done, and first prints. I'm very, very impressed with the printed result!
First a set of chesstowers 20mm high in black detail, BS&F, WS&F, grey robust and transparent detail. Had to try out some of the different materials.
Also printed a simple rim. 50mm diameter and 20mm high.
Was the only two things I came up with to try Alibre that I figured wouldn't be too hard to model for a first timer  The low stl resolution (on the side of the rim, most easily seen in the grey robust print..) is of course my own fault.. 
These things are hard to photograph properly!
Oh, and Shapeways: Thanks for giving me yet another addiction!  heheh

they are good shots.
I find that having a mini-tripod is really helpful for photographing small models.
sometimes a macro-lens or in some digital cameras just macro-mode- helps a lot with focusing up close to get some nice details.
and lighting + background make big differences.

I think the equipment has rescued me in this case 
Canon 350D Camera with a Sigma zoom lens in macro mode (photos were shot at 300mm, 1/60 shutter). More importantly though, I've not used the cameras built in flash but an external Speedlite 430EX flash. Makes all the difference! 
... oh, and I didn't use a tripod, but that would obviously help, yes

an awesome mini tripod great for table top close ups and funky angles
and yea, having awesome camera equipment like otjervaag helps

It's definitely a nice little pod for those funky angles. Got one from my brother last Christmas
Don't know if they are all like mine, but the joints on mine are not tight enough to hold up my SLR with the heavy Sigma lens. Works with lighter lenses though

I use the Gorillapod Professional Focus -- aluminum, supports 11 lbs, has no problem with big lenses.
