I am trying to lean how to 3D print mechanical moving parts. Is there a 3D model file (e.g. .dae) of a test model (e.g. whoosh machine) available so I can open it and look at it in Sketchup?

In any of the shopping categories, there is a checkbox to only show downloadable models. They require conversion to get to dae, but they can give you a start. I'd look for one that has a picture of the printed part so you know that the file did work as expected.
