I also experimented with another version that had cubes hanging from all corners save one, but that didn't work. The upper cubes hanged in weird angles and made a mess. So I cut the extra cubes away to turn them into the 'standard' model, and as a side product gained a bunch of small cubes that made a nice little bracelet:
