Does anyone know - is it safe to use the SLS Nylon (strong and flexible materials in any color) for earring backs? or can it cause infection?
I can not find anything about this on the material info sheet.
Thank you, Susan.
Happy holidays.

The WSF based materials are very porous and will capture dirt and other nasty stuff, so I would say, without a proper coating these would not be safe for the backing of an earring.

I am sorry - i meant to say post rather than back. (but that is an even more tricky area)
It seems nylon posts are commonly used for earring posts for people with a metal allergy. Is the SLS Nylon of a different make up? Is it possible to contact the company from which shapeways gets the material - just to learn more about it?
Thank you,
Susan.

They are probably the same material, but because of the production method of 3D printed WSF (Shapeways nylon material) it should not be used for earring hooks. The way it is produced is there is a bin of nylon powder that is fused with a laser. Nylon Jewelry is most likely injection molded. The fused powder is very porous where injection molded would be solid. So the Nylon itself would be fine, but the process makes it unacceptable for that application. You could contact EOS if you wanted for more information on the Nylon material.

oh. now I understand. Thank you.
Do you have contact info for EOS? I want to ask them about ways to possibly coat it after production.
Thank you,
Susan.

I know your primary concern is metal allergies, but mine would be how fragile the material is; even the strongest materials on Shapeways, to my knowledge, are far too brittle, porous, and rough to be used as an earring post. Best to print your earring and affix it to a post designed for the purpose.
