Greetings-

Can some CAD expert tell me, if I apply a bump map to a part drawn in Rhino (for example), will the final printed part have the bump map texture on it?

Thank you-

No. Any surface features need to be modelled as the printers (arpart from colour sandstone) only print the underlaying mesh.

Take a look at Zbrush http://www.pixologic.com/home.php

and here: http://www.pixologic.com/zbrush/features/07_brushes/

You can "paint" bump maps (alpha maps) on geometry which actually modifies the geometry and would print if the surface detail is deep enough.

There are even tutorials in the forum that show you step by step how to export the model for 3d printing.

There's a feature in 3ds Max to turn the bump map into actual mesh data, but depending on what you need, it may not give sufficient quality.

Thanks for the replies. The Zbrush info looks promising. I'll have to see how well it imports a Rhino-created export.
