Including a (new tech) 3rd party in your fabrication process is never cheap. For cheap, you've to fall back to DIY handcrafting and using traditional material.

For 3D printing and shipping one offs or a small set of shapes across the globe, there's probably no cheaper alternative than SW. 3D printer manufactures sometimes offer a free print, but this will only work once. When ordering larger quantities of the same shape, Materialise may be cheaper since they decrease the unit price.

An alternative would be using 2D parts as served by Ponoko and assemble your own 3D shape with the parts.

I work here
You could get them printed in China for cheaper. Would it be the same service as shapeways? no.

None better than Shapeways. Most US companies I requested quotes from are at 10 times the cost, and I severely doubt you'll get as good customer service from anyone.

I say we all raise a toast to Shapeways...
