So I was checking out the 3D modeler needed section of the forums and I decided that this post was needed:

Is it proper to advertise your services in this section?

I have never advertised in this section because I just assumed that it is a "Service Wanted" section, not a "Service Available" section. What does everyone else think about this? Maybe it is not that big of a deal, but if people feel poorly about advertising, I think that should be noted.

What do you think?

If too did not know what to think, and eventually "advertised" there.
Perhaps a bit too much of "well since everyone is doing it.." Rolling Eyes

But perhaps a section :
"3D Modelers at your service"
As it seems it's good to have ?

We advertise models so why not services ?

Cheers !

Hi guys,

I need to give that some thought - I'll get back to you on that.

Cheers,

Bart

Another point I want to make is that I check that section on a daily basis looking for jobs...

its a little frustrating seeing a whole bunch of people "looking" for work when it is a "Needed" forum.

Here is an idea: Another section/page/addition/expansion on the shop model. It would be a "Service" where instead of offering a model, we are able to say that we also do work. The page could have a quick blurb about our abilities/experience, contact info, pricing?, etc. Then, a page (like the Shops Gallery) that would show ONLY the shops/modelers that did jobs.

Not sure on the fine details on that one....but its just a suggestion/idea.

For what its worth,
I also don't like seeing the 'Hire me' ads. Perhaps another section as has been mooted, though with a templated ad, would level the playing field and keep it tidy. The hopeful modeller may have to display a virtual design, a printed model, list their programs of choice and a quick spiel for example.

Agreed. Except for the program of choice, I kind of consider that as an almost "trade secret" type thing. If they NEED you to work in blender, they can ask.

But anyways, I think a "Modelers Available" classifieds would be cool. Even if it was as simple as: Name, Yrs Experience, Examples, 200 character Spiel.

Hi,

we've opened a new forum called '3D modelers for hire':

http://www.shapeways.com/forum/index.php?t=thread&frm_id =98

I've added a few guidelines and a posting template to try and prevent this thing from becoming a messL

http://www.shapeways.com/forum/index.php?t=msg&th=2925&a mp;start=0

Would this work for you? Please let me know if you'd like me to change anything. Also, is the difference between the '3D modeler needed' and the new forum clear enough?

I think this (making yourself available for work) is a function that belongs to the "shop" or "profile" type place. Having it in a forum is fine, but is it something that the modeller would update? or is it just a board full on single message threads? What happens if the modeller "resigns"? What happens if the modeller is too busy?

A place to browse modellers here on shapeways can only be very valuable while it contains a very very few modellers because I don't think there's enough scope for differentiating one designer from another using just this forum.

With any more than a handful of designers, the gems will disappear into the background noise - without a further search/categorisation level ("search for modellers who specialise in xyz", "search for modellers with more than 200 successful prints" etC).

I think a better advertised/integrated "alchemy" service would be of more benefit than the modellers for hire board. Call it an expansion of the co-creator brand. Instead of "personalize your own", it's "design your own from scratch", and a link to an expiring "modellers wanted" type collection of wants.

Part of that collection is a list of recently completed projects and that allows the visitor to see who is a popular/successful modeller.

Cheers!

Hey Sandy,

yes, you're absolutely right about that. I'd much prefer a better integration into Shapeways. That would probably take rather long to prepare, so I opted for a 'quick-fix' for now. I'll be sure to put it on my wishlist though!
