Hey shapers,

3 cool items arrived -

First The One ring
The Elvish text was covered by the gold plating process , so i
re-uploaded a new design with thicker & wider fonts much like
the logo on the inner of the ring which came out quite good.

The second item is Squeeze It!

A toothpaste squeezer - Save $$$ - Save the planet ! Wink
I ordered it in Transparent Detail and it turned out awsome.
It really squeezes-flat my toothpaste.

Last, the Charging Dock for iPhone (2G/3G/3GS)

Although this is an old item in my shop i redesigned it to amplify
the sound of the speaker as much as 3 times without any use
of power thanks to the egg shape.

Charging Dock for iPhone (2G/3G/3GS)

Sadly this time around shapeways technician decided to align
my charging dock on the side so as you can see it has extremely bad artifacts of the 3D printing "stair steps" process.
(BTW this one was spray-coated with clear acrylic)

My last order of this Charging Dock was aligned correctly and it turned out very smooth..

Just my luck... when i applied a method how to extremely smooth my models with a Pro software to avoid the "stair-stepping" look...
It worked well on the other models ..

I think the stair stepping look is great - honesty to materials and all that.

Hi Asher,

I agree, looks cool and the stepping looks almost like a design feature Smile

But please remember, the stair stepping has nothing to do with the smoothness of your model.
It's a side effect of the printing process, the print orientation and printing quality settings.

Adding smaller polygons will make sure you won't see the polygons in the final model, but it does not influence the stepping.

If it really bothers you, luckily it's easily saned down.

Cheers,

Stijn

Stijn,

I do think that smoothing your model prior to sending it to printing helps with the overall smoothness of the model - of course, "stair stepping" is unavoidable if the model was aligned wrongly or the material s3elected + layer thickness aren't the best ...
But with regards to the "cubes" looks on round shapes , i can say for sure smoothing works very well with that.

I have the pics to speak for it.. check out my previous order of this Charging Dock for iphone

Even the Full color sandstone turned out very round-smooth for that material:

I'm not saying smoothing doesn't help make things rounder Wink

I was just referring to

All I'm saying is, you can't avoid this stair-stepping with pre-print smoothing.
