Is it possible? I see that Shapeways is upping the resolution on the detail materials for a bit, which is awesome, but can that be done on the stainless items as well? Is it ever going to be, even if only for a limited time?

probably yes, some time in the future, when the process and equipment allows for it.
But we are listening and working on brining you hi-res processes and wide breadth of materials.
to answer your question, for now we cannot up the resolution on stainless.
