    Hi gurus,

I'm Chemistry guy looking for a print of a chemical structure.
I have a software that makes the 3D forms but i am not sure in which format i should be using to be uploadable on Shapeways. I don't see the standerd X3D option on "save as" file types. I'm attaching picture of several other option which might sound familiar to you. I just want to have nice model.
    Thanks guys

    Hi,

This screenshot is from the import mesh menu, in Meshlab, it's free. It has the file *.pdb as an import type. Maybe this will work for you. Once it is in Meshlab you may be able to manipulate your model, you will then have to export mesh as either an .stl or .obj for it to be accepted by Shapeways. There is another free progam called Netfabb where you can scale, check and repair your model.
    Hope this helps.

This EMF file didn't have anything in it but the bounding box. Perhaps you need to select all the items before you export.

I also just noticed that the 3DS format is one of the choices. Can you try exporting that?

Feel free to PM me if you wish.

I was looking on Google for 'Corannulene' and on the images I noticed that it looks like it is a segment of a 'geodesic dome'. If it is, there is more than one way to skin a cat !!!

Are you familiar with Sketchup? You may be able to use this file as a starting point by adding spheres to the vertices and using the follow me command to make 'pipes' to join the structure together. Then delete what you don't want. There are lots of models and step by step instructions by TaffGoch, who by the way is a Physicist.
It's worth a try, once you use it you will be hooked.
