Ridiculously pretty snowflake cufflinks

  1. For your consideration and delight I proudly present, some hexagons, in a circle, with a stick at the back :)
    Simple but IMO very pretty.

    There are currently two variations:
    -inny
    -outy
Yes, the names might need some work.

I also made this spinney roundy video to get a better idea of how they will look in metal:

The plastic proof prints have arrived, and they both look really nice.
Problem is, I typically go through two or three iterations before I'm done tinkering.

Which one should I take forward?
    All suggestions welcome

They both look amazing, but I like the inny one best. :)

  5. Thanks Shawn,
You have a point, I liked the outy ones best in the renders.
But since the plastic prints arrived, the inny one are my favourites too.

IanSutton let us know when they get printed in silver, I think both versions will be stunning :)

  7. Thanks Andrew,

I have ordered a set of the inny ones in Rhodium plated brass.
Hopefully they will print as intended.
Expect to see pictures here shortly after they arrive.

The plastic prints turned out well, but obviously the tolerances for Rhodium plated brass are different.
Based on the published clearances they should be fine, although you never know for a specific shape until you try.
This seems to be doubly true when you design to be right on the minimum clearances, which I often do.

    Fingers crossed.

yeah I think it should be good.

The one difference is that the interior faces between the hexagons won't be polished, which may give it a slightly different appearance than the renders

  9. Oops, I forgot to post pictures of the actual FUD prints.
They aren't as pretty as the renders, but I always find it very interesting how holding the physical object can alter your feelings about a model.

There were originally a pair of these, but I dropped one on the kitchen floor, where it smashed into several pieces.
Brass is more resilient than FUD right?, although I may have to strengthen the links that connect the hexagons.
Hopefully not though, because that would spoil the illusion that they are floating in place, which is what I was trying for ;-)

It's a balancing act, as always.

Thanks to the forum mods for keeping me honest.

  10. Thanks Shapeways,
These little beauties turned out every bit as well as I hoped:

There is some very minor tweaking which I want to do, and then they will be totally done.
